Newcastle United Football Club (nicknamed The Magpies) is a professional football club based in Newcastle upon Tyne. The first record of football being played on Tyneside dates from 3 March 1877 at Elswick Rugby Club. Later that year, Newcastle's first football club, Tyne Association, was formed. The team was renamed Newcastle East End F.C. in October 1882. Shortly after this, another Byker side, Rosewood FC, merged with East End to form an even stronger side. Meanwhile, across the city, West End Cricket Club began to take an interest in football and in August 1882, they formed Newcastle West End F.C. West End played their early football on their cricket pitch, but in May 1886, the club moved into St. James' Park.

The two clubs became rivals in the Northern League. During the spring of 1892, in a season during which West End's results were at an all-time low, and in which they had lost to their bitter rivals, East End, five times, West End found themselves in serious trouble. They approached East End with a view to a take over, the directors having decided that the club could no longer continue — leading to a merger of the two rivals as Newcastle East End decided to adopt a new name in recognition of the merger.Suggested names included Newcastle F.C., Newcastle Rangers, Newcastle City and City of Newcastle, but Newcastle United was decided upon on 9 December 1892, to signify the unification of the two teams.

The club has been a member of the Premier League for all but three years of the competition's history, spending 85 seasons in the top tier as of May 2016, and has never dropped below English football's second tier since joining the Football League in 1893. They have won four League Championship titles, six FA Cups and a Charity Shield, as well as the 1969 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup and the 2006 UEFA Intertoto Cup. Newcastle United has the ninth highest total of trophies won by an English club. The club's most successful period was between 1904 and 1910, when they won an FA Cup and three of their First Division titles. The club were highly successful in the Premier League in the 1990s and early 2000s without winning any trophies, but have been mostly struggling since the 2006–07 season, and were relegated in 2009 and 2016.

Newcastle has a fierce local rivalry with Sunderland, and the two clubs have engaged in the Tyne-Wear derby since 1898. Newcastle play their home games at St James' Park — which has been the home ground of Newcastle United since 1892 and has been used for football since 1880.

Newcastle will beat us, better team than both Everton and Galatasaray and no way we score three goals in three consecutive games.

If we had won tonight the mood would be so much better but now the doubt will be back in defence with that clown behind them.

    3-1 Newcastle.

Can we get Varane back in the team please? Then sort out a more solid midfield formation.

If you bet your house on Newcastle you'll have two houses at the end of the match. Ridiculous odds.

United to scrape a draw and the roller coaster continues

Always impressed with how much Newcastle work their asses off defensively. Bruno G is a big cnut, but also a real beasty engine. I’d take a draw here.

Take Gordon and Trippier out of the game and they’ll lack creativity imo.

Really worried Newcastle could give us a right good hiding.

You should go and post on bluemoon.

Newcastle hard to beat by make themselves hard to score against. Rarely gift goals to the opposition. Man United the very opposite. It will be a minimal 2 goal win for the home side.

Not a chance Onana gets dropped. No matter how much we all want him too. He’s made mistake after mistake this season and still remained number 1.

It's time to face the fact that Onono is a net-negative impact, and put his ass on notice that his place in the team is in question if he keeps screwing up.

At any rate, I'm not hoping for much in this one. They're the better team and should be winning this and sending us back to 8th where we belong.

a draw would be a good result here. our champions league campaign has been absolutely ridiculous but generally the PL results have been tight, overall disappointing, but not chaotic. We're in a decent run and would be good to consolidate it with a result in a tough away match, i think we'd go into chelsea and bournemouth with real confidence then. Surely, surely, we are due some sort of result away against a decent team.

They'll bully us again like the last two times we've played them.

Won’t be fun. They seem to be free scoring in these sorts of games. Especially at home.

Both teams got a kick in the teeth in Europe. Less travel and more recovery for them. Not optimistic but I wasn't optimistic about the last 2 games either (and they went pretty ok tbh).

    Hojlund
    Garnacho Bruno Rashford
    Mainoo McTominay
    Shaw Lindelof Maguire Dalot
    Onana
Antony vs Rashford is a toss up. Antony actually played well today, but rashford will play. RB is also a toss up. Could argue between Hojlund and Martial too, depending on fitness.

I’d expect any of the teams in the top half to beat us away from home. We are too easy to play against and our midfield is a complete mess so should be comfortable win for Newcastle.

    Onana's confidence is shot

Newcastle will be tasked to pepper him all day.

Not confident on this game, not confident at all.

Vast majority voting that they think Newcastle is going to pump us. I think we take this 1-2.

No idea what to do about Onana. His league form has been good and he's been an utter train wreck in the CL. I would be all for dropping him, but haven't seen Bayindir play. As long as we're not playing the sweeper-keeper high line transition shit, then why are we playing Onana? That seemed to be his key selling point. But with CBs who have no recovery pace, and backups to the backups featuring as fullbacks, his one deficiency is shot stopping and that's all he's able to attempt. I'd drop him, play Bayindir, and one of two things will happen:

1.) Bayindir has a good game and we stick with him for awhile. Onana is out of the firing line and has to work his socks off to get back his spot.
2.) Bayindir is a disaster, and then Onana will feel he's at least better than the backup, and maybe it boosts his confidence.

Not a chance Onana gets dropped. No matter how much we all want him too. He’s made mistake after mistake this season and still remained number 1.
This last game at Galatasary could push any sane man to the brink of insanity. EtH needs to drop him.

Wow, not sure what to think here. We shouldn´t feel afraid to play Newcastle but here we are.
They have the tools to punish us big time. Hopefully Onana can restore his confidence somehow and channel his inner De Gea here, we desperately need it.

Newcastle at home in the Premier League this season.

One defeat was against Liverpool when they had the man advantage and were 1-0 ahead. Only Villa and Liverpool have better home record with 6 wins from 6.
