Southampton Football Club (nicknamed The Saints) are a professional football club based in Southampton, Hampshire. Southampton were founded in 1885 by members of St Mary's Church of England Young Men's Association. St. Mary's Y.M.A., as they were usually referred to in the local press, played most of their early games on The Common where games were frequently interrupted by pedestrians insistent on exercising their right to roam. More important matches, such as cup games, were played either at the County Cricket Ground in Northlands Road or the Antelope Cricket Ground in St Mary's Road. The club was originally known as St. Mary's Young Men's Association F.C. (usually abbreviated to "St. Mary's Y.M.A.") and then became simply St. Mary's F.C. in 1887-88, before adopting the name Southampton St. Mary's when the club joined the Southern League in 1894.

Southampton play their home games at St. Mary's Stadium, and were one of the founding members of the Premier League in 1992. The club has a long-standing sporting rivalry with Portsmouth in a match termed the South Coast Derby or the Hampshire Derby. Southampton has received praise for employing an intense brand of football under Mauricio Ralph Hasenhüttl, and having one of the best youth systems on English soil — which has churned out the likes of Alan Shearer, Gareth Bale, Matth Le Tissier, Theo Walcott, Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain, James Ward-Prowse, Calum Chambers, Adam Lallana over the years — as well as current Manchester United leftback, Luke Shaw.

    First real test for Ole.

Think this will be a real tough one. Fancy both sides to score. Our success will be determined by our ability to beat their strong initial press.

Slowly building results. Need to continue to get ahead on the table.

Probably same team as against West Brom Or maybe Greenwood in for Mata.

    I’m torn between Fred/McT, Fred/VdB or even VdB/McT first gives us a nice balance and better defensive protection, but would be good to have VdB in to help beat the Saints press, I’d go with;

    ......................De Gea
    AWB....Lindelof....Maguire....Telles
    ...............Fred....McT/VdB
    Mason..........Bruno........Rashford
    .....................Martial

I like Cavani up top but I want to see MMM get their swagger back together!!

This has got draw written all over it.

We've only beaten them once in our last 5 games v them, and that was down to a last minute Lukaku goal.

    1-1

This will be a tough one, when was the last time we beat them?

We don't generally lose against Southampton. But we also always struggle to beat them. 6 wins in the last 15.

I don’t think we’ll make a change unless Lindelof is injured.

Keep what we had tonight at the start with 1 change; swap Martial for Greenwood. Tough game but that team might just nick it 1-2

We need three in midfield for this. They'll press us high as they did at OT last year. VDB needs to play.

Hope Pogba doesn't start they will do a job on him by nicking the ball of him when he is trying to turn on edge of the box. Need players who will move the ball quicker in midfield.

Yea that actually happened last time or a few games previously, where Pogba got caught in possession and they got a goal i think.

They are arguably the best pressing team in the world.
VDB has to play this game.

    Martial

    Rashford---------Bruno-----Greenwood

    Fred McTominay

    Telles----Maguire---Tuanzebe----*AWB

    De Gea

Subs: Henderson, Mengi, Williams, Matic, vdB, James, Cavani

    *Williams if AWB is injured
I can't see us winning, but you never know. Most likely a draw.

We will win as Ings is out. Walcott just isn't clinical enough (see the one on one he missed versus Wolves which would have killed that game) and I think the overall quality across our team will tell.
They are flying well above their level and we are stumbling our way up the table but our squad is huge and generally fit, Bruno is amazing and we have VAR on our side. We should be winning this game despite how highly I rate Hasenhuttl.

    Cavani
    Martial - Fernandes - Rashford
    Van de Beek - Fred
    Telles Maguire Lindelof Wan Bissaka
    De Gea
Unchaged side here. Think Ole will start McTominay over VdB, but for their pressing, we need VdB in there to get through it. Will be a tough game, hope the front 4 are on it.

If we try and build from the back then they'll catch us time and time again. Their pressing game is one of their biggest assets, so is there a case to bypass the midfield altogether and go long down the flanks?

Think we have enough firepower to score a few goals for sure, Ings being out is a bonus. Need to be really careful not to give free kicks away or Ward Prowse will punish us.

I'd play McTominay and have VDB on the bench. VDB did well, but we were so open.

Ings is a big miss, but Che Adams has a habit of scoring against the bigger teams when he does score (City last season, Chelsea & Everton this season) and the same can be said for Obafemi (Chelsea & United) last season.

The defence is suddenly looking light with Shaw, Lindelöf and possibly AWB all injured, and Maguire seemingly playing with an injury as well.

It will be a tough game and they were really dirty the last time we played them.

Romeu can be a dirty fecker.

Teams that press can come across as dirty due to the number of professional fouls they commit up high. To stop themselves from being countered if the press is bypassed.

Think the bus will be back in this game. I don't mind though if he still plays vdb and Bruno infront of them with Rashford and Martial. If we see Mata or dare I say it, Dan James start, I'm personally going to riot.

Not a home game, convinced that we will be okay. Yawn.

This has got McFred written all over it. Think he’ll play Greenwood and rest cavani for PSG next week. Axel for Lindelof assuming he’s injured.

Will Cavani be able to start again after an energetic full 90 tonight?

Tough game - stating the obvious here by saying that we desperately need this win to get some momentum going in the league.

This is one of those games you just cannot see us winning isn't it

I'd be more confident playing City away

Southampton are better away than at home and so are we so I’m actually glad they’re at home. We will struggle though. Reckon it could be a high-scoring game. We’ve won here once in the last 4 seasons and all of our wins since they came up have been lucky.

Against Southampton's high press, we can't afford to leave any gaps in midfield. It has to be Fred-McTominay in the middle. None of the other CM options are suited to this game. It's an area where we have to strengthen in the summer.

If we start Pogba then god bless us against their high press.

I'd like to see us go with this (I'm guessing Lindelöf will be out), I want to see if McTominay will be a more solid defensive compliment to Van de Beek. In truth though I'm expecting the McFred double pivot which should then move Rashford to LW, Martial to #9 and then VdB to RM as Ole surely can't pick Mata again.

I dont know why people are still thinking of Axel when he is very very raw and lacks maturity and confidence.
Didn't we all see what happened to him tonight. He didn't like being pressed at all. In fact he got nervous and his lack of communication with both Fred and Maguire was so evident.
I am not against him. I just think that he needs time before we start trusting him in difficult high press games
