Newcastle United Football Club (nicknamed The Magpies) is a professional football club based in Newcastle upon Tyne. The first record of football being played on Tyneside dates from 3 March 1877 at Elswick Rugby Club. Later that year, Newcastle's first football club, Tyne Association, was formed. The team was renamed Newcastle East End F.C. in October 1882. Shortly after this, another Byker side, Rosewood FC, merged with East End to form an even stronger side. Meanwhile, across the city, West End Cricket Club began to take an interest in football and in August 1882, they formed Newcastle West End F.C. West End played their early football on their cricket pitch, but in May 1886, the club moved into St. James' Park.

The two clubs became rivals in the Northern League. During the spring of 1892, in a season during which West End's results were at an all-time low, and in which they had lost to their bitter rivals, East End, five times, West End found themselves in serious trouble. They approached East End with a view to a take over, the directors having decided that the club could no longer continue - leading to a merger of the two rivals as Newcastle East End decided to adopt a new name in recognition of the merger.Suggested names included Newcastle F.C., Newcastle Rangers, Newcastle City and City of Newcastle, but Newcastle United was decided upon on 9 December 1892, to signify the unification of the two teams.

The club has been a member of the Premier League for all but three years of the competition's history, spending 85 seasons in the top tier as of May 2016, and has never dropped below English football's second tier since joining the Football League in 1893. They have won four League Championship titles, six FA Cups and a Charity Shield, as well as the 1969 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup and the 2006 UEFA Intertoto Cup. Newcastle United has the ninth highest total of trophies won by an English club. The club's most successful period was between 1904 and 1910, when they won an FA Cup and three of their First Division titles. The club were highly successful in the Premier League in the 1990s and early 2000s without winning any trophies, but have been mostly struggling since the 2006–07 season, and were relegated in 2009 and 2016.

Newcastle has a fierce local rivalry with Sunderland, and the two clubs have engaged in the Tyne-Wear derby since 1898. Newcastle play their home games at St James' Park - which has been the home ground of Newcastle United since 1892 and has been used for football since 1880.

Absolutely buzzing for this. Such a great feeling to be looking forward to games again. Tough place to go but if we play like we have been we’ll score goals.

These are dire though are always up for it v us and we've made a right mess of our last few visits there. Have to win though and we will.

    DDG

    Young Lindelof Jones Shaw

    Herrera Matic Pogba

    Lingard Rashford Martial

Although I think there’s a chance Lingard might drop out with Alexis or Lukaku coming in

Another different test and arguably a tougher one given the benitez defence factor and being away from home.

It's another we need to pass if we're serious though and I think we will, we'll bounce into the spurs game off a stack of wins and then it gets real

3-1 with Rashers and martial among the goals

We looked a bit tired at times so wouldn't be surprised to see some rotation across the front line.

Sanchez probably doesn't impact our fluidity too much but I'm concerned that others coming in like Mata and Lukaku will

Rondon is going to have a fun time against our defenders.. But if our attackers turn up, we should easily outscore them

    de Gea
    Young - Jones - Lindelof - Shaw
    Herrera - Matic - Pogba
    Lingard - Rashford - Martial

These Geordies always have a tendency to turn up against us especially at St James’ Park.

If we play the same way we have done then we will get the win. Confidence is sky high at the club which is great to see.

Same lineup unless Rash is injured then put Lukaku in. Will be the chance to redeem himself, and Jones for Bailly.

Should be another 1-3 or 1-4 win.

    De Gea
    Young Lindelof Jones Shaw
    Matic
    Herrera -- Pogba
    Sanchez Lukaku Martial

I actually think we’ll lose this one, which will act as a bit of a reality check. 2-1, Rondon, Ritchie and Martial scoring.

    Team should be...

    --------------De Gea--------------
    Young--Lindelof--Jones--Shaw
    -------Herrera-------Matic-------
    Mata---------Pogba---------Martial
    -------------Rashford-------------

Subs: Romero, Darmian, Fellaini, Fred, Lingard, Sanchez, Lukaku

The physical demands of the new regime is bound to be catching up with the players. It is important to refresh the team a little for this game. Rashford and Lingard have been running to the ground and could be given at least some rest for the game.

Let's extend the sentence "It's only Cardiff, Huddersfield and Bournemouth" by adding Newcastle into the mix.

Bailly has put us in a bit of a tight spot as Smalling definitely won't be back and Rojo won't be anywhere near match fit either. At least he should be on the bench. I was hoping Ole just let Lindelof/Jones continue and used the Reading match to play Bailly & Rojo. Alas, it hasn't worked out, but hopefully, we don't get any more injuries or suspensions. Hoping Rashford's injury isn't enough to keep him out of the squad on Wednesday, but at least Lukaku is back and can start in his place. Also, with Sanchez being touch and go, he could easily take Rashford's place on the bench if he doesn't make it.

    de Gea
    Young Lindelof Jones Shaw
    Matic
    Herrera Pogba
    Lingard Lukaku Martial
    ---
Romero; Rojo, Darmian; Fellaini, Pereira, Mata; Sanchez

Under the assumption Dalot, Fred, Rashford etc don't make it, we'd have to go with this. I think Dalot or Valencia would be involved if fit over Darmian. Rashford or Fred may take Pereira's place if fit. I think this one will be closer than the last three, but hopefully, we can take the win.

    0-2

I would change the whole front three and bring in Mata, Sanchez and Lukaku. Great passer, energy and finishing.

    Matic
    Fred Pogba
    Alexis Rashford Martial
Too much to throw Alexis in? Really want to see if he is an option for PSG, let’s get him sharp as possible if so.

First real test for Ole. I think we'll struggle particularly with Newcastle having an extra day's rest. Probably a draw.

Benitez will duly park the bus. It'll be a challenge to break them down and at the same time not get done on the counter.

    I'll go with:

    De Gea
    Darmian Lindelof Jones Young
    Matic
    Herrera Pogba
    Mata Lukaku Martial

Newcastle are the 2nd worst home side in the league this year. have dropped 23 points out of 30, -8 GD. Worst is Huddersfield with 25 points dropped at home

Have won 1 in their last 7. 1-0 away to Huddersfield

    De Gea
    Young Jones Lindelof Shaw
    Matic
    Fred Pogba
    Alexis Rashford Martial

Don't see him starting. I think he'll get time off the bench like Lukaku did. We'll see Lukaku & Sanchez given their chance at a start and hopefully, 90 minutes, against Reading the game after this.

Got to get control and score early to calm that irritating ground down.

Same lineup again please (minus Bailly obv) there’s no need to mess with the team. I’m excited for this, it’s a weird feeling.

We need some rotations but the spine must stay intact. DDG, Lindelof, Matic, Pogba, Rashford.

    Sanchez Rashford Martial

    We look knackered.

This negative energy has no place here! A bit of rotation, we’ll be fine. Very composed at the end of the game today, passing around for fun. Certainly didn’t look out on their feet.
