Newcastle United Football Club (nicknamed The Magpies), are a professional football club based in Newcastle upon Tyne. The first record of football being played on Tyneside dates from 3 March 1877 at Elswick Rugby Club. Later that year, Newcastle's first football club, Tyne Association, was formed. The team was renamed Newcastle East End F.C. in October 1882. Shortly after this, another Byker side, Rosewood FC, merged with East End to form an even stronger side. Meanwhile, across the city, West End Cricket Club began to take an interest in football and in August 1882, they formed Newcastle West End F.C. West End played their early football on their cricket pitch, but in May 1886, the club moved into St. James' Park.

The two clubs became rivals in the Northern League. During the spring of 1892, in a season during which West End's results were at an all-time low, and in which they had lost to their bitter rivals, East End, five times, West End found themselves in serious trouble. They approached East End with a view to a take over, the directors having decided that the club could no longer continue - leading to a merger of the two rivals as Newcastle East End decided to adopt a new name in recognition of the merger.Suggested names included Newcastle F.C., Newcastle Rangers, Newcastle City and City of Newcastle, but Newcastle United was decided upon on 9 December 1892, to signify the unification of the two teams.

The club has been a member of the Premier League for all but three years of the competition's history, spending 85 seasons in the top tier as of May 2016, and has never dropped below English football's second tier since joining the Football League in 1893. They have won four League Championship titles, six FA Cups and a Charity Shield, as well as the 1969 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup and the 2006 UEFA Intertoto Cup. Newcastle United has the ninth highest total of trophies won by an English club. The club's most successful period was between 1904 and 1910, when they won an FA Cup and three of their First Division titles. The club were highly successful in the Premier League in the 1990s and early 2000s without winning any trophies, but have been mostly struggling since the 2006–07 season, and were relegated in 2009 and 2016.

Newcastle has a fierce local rivalry with Sunderland, and the two clubs have engaged in the Tyne-Wear derby since 1898. Newcastle play their home games at St James' Park - which has been the home ground of Newcastle United since 1892 and has been used for football since 1880.

    Familiar Faces

    N/A.

    De Gea

    Dalot Bailly Smalling Shaw
    Matic
    Fellaini Pogba
    Rashford Lukaku Martial

Will probably be Valencia in for Dalot and Sanchez in for Martial.

I would not be surprised at all if Newcastle got something from this. One of the worst teams this season will fancy their chances against us. In fact I give them more than a chance.

I absolutely hate the international break but it could not come quick enough after this game.

Just really don’t know what to expect. Will not be surprised if this ends goaless

We haven't conceded a goal in over 90 minutes, so I feel optimistic about this one. We'll only lose with one goal this time.

Think we'll win this, and ease some pressure of Jose before the international break. Unfortunately for us it just prolongs the inevitable.

Newcastle are so shit, that it'll be very, very impressive if we don't win this.

So a 1-1 draw it is.

    Team should be...

    ---------------De Gea---------------
    Dalot---Bailly---Smalling---Shaw
    ----------------Matic----------------
    -------Fred--------------Pogba-------
    Rashford-----Sanchez-------Martial

Subs: Romero, Lindelof, Darmian, Valencia Fellaini, Lukaku, Mata

Rafa's under pressure too no? I wouldn't be surprised the way I expect Newcastle to play would be that we will draw or lose.

    Newcastle will be difficult.

    Mourinho's last game I think.

    Benitez.

Definitely skipping this one unless Mourinho is booted pre-match. I'll catch the highlights.

He's a lucky boy that we've got this shower just before the international break, like he was with the Burnley game, a bit of breathing space just in the nick of time.

    DDG
    Dalot Smalling Lindelof Shaw
    Pereira
    Fred ————-Pogba
    Sanchez
    Rashford ——— Martial
Sanchez as like a false 9, might as well go out swinging Jose and that’s probably the most attacking team we have except maybe Bailey instead of Lindelof.

Same team bar Fred for Fellaini or Matic. Need to build on the clean sheet and just get a first XI who are comfortable together.

I would take losing 10-0 a Old Trafford if it meant Mourinho would get sacked that very same day tbh. It's gotten to that point. Whatever result gets Mourinho sacked, I'm happy with. Short term pain, long term gain.
Anyway, neither will happen probably for the next little bit I'd assume. Though the pressure really is being ramped up.

Newcastle are toothless and overall look like relegation fodder, I think we'll win 2-0.

As for the team, I think it'll be the side below bar Matic studpidly being started over Fred.

Don't care if we win, lose or draw to be honest. Would be lying if I pretended to care.
This club needs a reboot .

Newcastle are a very poor team so a good chance to get a draw and pick up a pt here.

    Would love to see this, shackles off;

    ................DDG................
    Dalot..Bailly.....Smalling..Shaw
    ..............Matic.................
    .......Fred........Pogba........
    .............Sanchez............
    ..Rashford.........Martial.....

    One day, we’ll see this!!

We’ll win this, the performance will still be crap though. 2-0, Lukaku with both.

    --------------De Gea
    Dalot----Smalling---Bailly-----Shaw
    Valencia---Matic---Fred-----Young
    ------------Rashford---Martial------

If we play anywhere near our full potential I can see us picking up a point.

    5-3-2
    De gea
    Valencia Mctominay Smalling Jones Young
    Fellaini Matic Pogba
    Lukaku Rashford.
I think we could do with more height and more defensive players to handle the Newcastle threat.

We've gotta win this, surely

    2-0.

Facing Newcastle at home, we need to make sure we are strong defensively.

    De gea
Valencia Mctominay Smalling Jones Lindelof Shaw
    Fellaini Matic Pogba

    Lukaku

Hopefully we'll keep another cleansheet! Going for a stunning 0-0.

Subs: Phil Jones to come in for Lukaku and Young for Fellaini.

    C'mon lads!!

    DDG
    Dalot Smalling Bailly Shaw
    Fred Periera
    Mata Pogba Martial
    Rashford

Jonjo Shelvey to boss the midfield again as we say adieu to Jose at OT.
