Newcastle United Football Club (nicknamed The Magpies), are a professional football club based in Newcastle upon Tyne. The first record of football being played on Tyneside dates from 3 March 1877 at Elswick Rugby Club. Later that year, Newcastle's first football club, Tyne Association, was formed. The team was renamed Newcastle East End F.C. in October 1882. Shortly after this, another Byker side, Rosewood FC, merged with East End to form an even stronger side. Meanwhile, across the city, West End Cricket Club began to take an interest in football and in August 1882, they formed Newcastle West End F.C. West End played their early football on their cricket pitch, but in May 1886, the club moved into St. James' Park.

The two clubs became rivals in the Northern League. During the spring of 1892, in a season during which West End's results were at an all-time low, and in which they had lost to their bitter rivals, East End, five times, West End found themselves in serious trouble. They approached East End with a view to a take over, the directors having decided that the club could no longer continue - leading to a merger of the two rivals as Newcastle East End decided to adopt a new name in recognition of the merger.Suggested names included Newcastle F.C., Newcastle Rangers, Newcastle City and City of Newcastle, but Newcastle United was decided upon on 9 December 1892, to signify the unification of the two teams.

The club has been a member of the Premier League for all but three years of the competition's history, spending 85 seasons in the top tier as of May 2016, and has never dropped below English football's second tier since joining the Football League in 1893. They have won four League Championship titles, six FA Cups and a Charity Shield, as well as the 1969 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup and the 2006 UEFA Intertoto Cup. Newcastle United has the ninth highest total of trophies won by an English club. The club's most successful period was between 1904 and 1910, when they won an FA Cup and three of their First Division titles. The club were highly successful in the Premier League in the 1990s and early 2000s without winning any trophies, but have been mostly struggling since the 2006–07 season, and were relegated in 2009 and 2016.

Newcastle has a fierce local rivalry with Sunderland, and the two clubs have engaged in the Tyne-Wear derby since 1898. Newcastle play their home games at St James' Park - which has been the home ground of Newcastle United since 1892 and has been used for football since 1880.

Turning over Rafa’s team would be a good remedy I suppose

Don't let Henrik anywhere near the grounds

    Valencia - Bailly - Jones - Young
    Matic - Pogba
    Mata - Mikhi ( sadly ) - Rashford

No rush for this one...a nice 2 week break to forget about today!

They’re actually decent defensively. But doubt they will cause us too many problems. We need a result big time now.

Remember the times when we let the horses loose and battered teams? Them were the days.

How many international breaks are there this season?

These cnuts let me down for £300 on an accumulator, at home to 19th placed Bournemouth.. hope we smash the cnuts

I have a feeling this will be the game United will kick start again. Pogba will be back and that means creativity. Think we will play a similar team to the one we seen at West ham. Expect Lukaku to get better service and the goals to come back. Death to international football.

    De Gea
    Valencia - Jones - Rojo - Blind
    Rashford - Matic - Pogba - Martial
    Lukaku - Zlatan

Assuming a few players get back to full fitness, I'd love to see us line up like that. I'm hoping the Chelsea game will be a turning point and that we realise the need to entertain.

Would love to see Rashford and Martial operating the flanks and switching sides from time to time. Plus with Lukaku and Zlatan up top, it would give the opposition defence so much to think about. Fully expect us to play five at the back with the aim of getting a hard-fought 1-0 victory, mind, but it's nice to hope for an attacking display.

Went for a 3-0 win for Newcastle, always good to be optimistic since we're gonna finish mid table this season since we lost to Chelsea.

Crazy to think that in the past month since the last international break, we had 5 away games and just the 2 home games (and playing Liverpool, Benfica twice, Tottenham and Chelsea in that time). Be good to get a normal spread of home/away games now, hopefully with our best players on the pitch. Hoping for:

    De Gea
    Valencia Bailly Jones Blind
    Mata Matic Pogba
    Rashford Lukaku Martial

We're at home, if Pogba is back then absolutely play with Rashford and Martial on the 2 wings and just go for it. We need those 3 to get an understanding of playing together and make them our main front 3 if we want to get anywhere.

Newcastle wont be a pushover IMO, I think this is the gamne that will finally see Mkhi dropped.

    fecking smash these cnuts

    Lukaku
    Rashford Mkhi Mata
    Pogba Matic

Rafa teams dont get rolled over that easily. 1-0 or 2-0 will be a good result.
Lascelles (ankle injury) missing this game will be a boon for us. If we contain Ritchie it should be smooth sailing.

I’m hoping for a good win here, a couple of goals from Lukaku and having Pogba back will invariably lift the spirits...so that’s a 1-1 from me.

We've been crap for a while since the last break, but we've looked awful in all the games we've played first thing after a break.

    Mata---------------------------------------Rashford
    ---------------------Lukaku-----------------------------

SUBS - Pogba (Herrera), Mkhitaryan (Mata), Martial (Rashford)

Rafa has them drilled well defensively and they're pretty tough to beat nowadays. Nothing special, but just the type of team who can come and frustrate us.
