Listen to 1000 albums.

The second track (which is as far as I've come) reminds me a of all of Broadcast, Notwist and Why?. If you don't know the latter (which I guess you do), then you need to listen to Alopecia.

Erm, Barrel Jumping = The Moon by The Microphones. (That's the only track I've listened to so far, and while it's nice, it only makes me want to listen to The Microphones.) An homage, I guess?

Not listened to Notwist, but got a couple of Why? albums a while back and have had them sat in a playlist of music I need to get round to listening to, will do so today!

I fecking love The Microphones, I was tempted to put up The Glow Pt. 2 instead of Astronautalis. Probably explains why I like Barrel Jumping so much. But would still highly recommend Astronautalis, there's a lot more to him than sounding like Phil Elvrum.

A bit different than the recent ones.

Les Chinoiseries - Onra - Spotify

One of my favorite albums/artists in recent times.

So yeah Onra is a French beatmaker, he made this album from old Chinese and Vietnamese vinyls which he picked up in flea markets on a trip to Vietnam, the land of his grandparents.

This was really interesting stuff, felt some of the tunes could have been expanded into longer songs but apart from that it was a really good listen. 8.5/10

Going to listen to Astronautlis once the football finishes.

That's very current, listening to it now - though I must confess I've never really been able to get into the Chemical Brothers in the past. I've liked odd tracks but never albums.

Well listened to it a couple of times, and was a bit underwhelmed really. It sounded very Chemical Brothers (which is fine) but neither produced anything that sounded like a classic to me, or innovated upon that sound. That said, at heart it's dance music - made to dance to, and that's not really a genre of music I've ever gotten into.

tbf I saw that no one had posted an album so I just picked the latest one I got.

I really like it though, much better then pile of crap that 'We are the night' is. Well worth listening to, specially if you are into this type of music.

Next time I will post something totally different (and older), but hopefully someone will post a new album for tomorrow. Good thread this if it can continue.

Poor man's Southside Johnny (who's some people's poor man's Springsteen) as I listen.

Poor man's Southside Johnny (who's some people's poor man's Springstein) as I listen.

They are heavily inspired by Springsteen. Think he played with them for a song or two at Glastonbury last year.

Need to catch up myself now, I've heard tracks off both these last two albums but not the whole things yet, will try and give them both a listen tomorrow.

Listening to the Chemical Brothers album now and I'm a little dissapointed really. Always enjoyed their stuff, but don't think any of the tracks are really all that great. Most of them seem to have good moments in them, sometimes great, but that's balanced out with a couple of minutes where it gets boring. It's not a bad album by any means, but on first listen there's nothing there that makes me want to own it. In fact I'm gonna agree with SecondFig again, there's nothing that sounds classic on there, which is what always made these guys stand out. For every great less commercial track there was a massive hit single waiting to happen, not so much here. I think my higher than usual expectations (already being a fan) for something from this thread probably feeds the dissapointment, but really didn't do it for me this one.

Will give Gaslight Anthem a listen after tonights match.

Quite liked the slightly raw, almost tumbling over themselves, feel of a couple of the tracks - but his voice just didn't do it for me. Not sure why but I often find that a singer's voice is integral to whether I like that band or not. Not in terms of technical ability, don't care about that at all, but just whether it connects to me or not.

Overall it just ended up a little bland, lacking in ideas, and sounded like a band (and especially singer) who are far too much in awe of and love with The Boss.

Is it balls. Really do not like this one.

Yeah that's what last.fm categorized them as so I just went with that. Music is just music to me, genrres are for snobs.

True enough, but usually when things are categorised they are usually close to giving an idea of what it sounds like. Punk to me is usually a bit chaotic and edgy. Fair enough, these guys seem to like their power-chords but it's too MOR for me. Also, they wear flat caps and porkpie hats and that's never a good sign.

Just gave Gaslight Anthem a proper listen and it's another album I didn't really enjoy. The tracks kind of blend together after a while, it's all a little dull. I reckon listening to the tracks individually would benefit them, as I really liked The '59 Sound when it was released last year, but it got a bit lost when listening to the album as a whole. There's a good energy to most of the songs, and from what I've seen they look like a good live act, but this album just doesn't do it for me.

Indie is for snobs.

Don't know where you get the idea that I listen solely to "indie" music. Some of my favourite bands could be categorized as such but it's only some, not all or anywhere near all.

Right, listened to Ozzy, just does nothing for me. But then, to be fair, it was always a long way from what I like in music. I don't really like bold brash OTT stuff, I hate guitar solos (yes it's technically very impressive but you're basically just jerking off your instrument) and listening to Ozzy all I could think of was an older Ozzy drunkenly fishing with cheese and falling in the sea

Not a fan of the Ozzy album. I've liked some of his stuff before (both solo and Sabbath), but don't think a whole album is really for me. Found myself getting bored after around 5 or 6 tracks. Also, and it's probably sacrilege in heavy metal circles, but I've never really been a fan of his voice. It certainly suits some songs very well, but I find it distracting quite often.

A track from this album just came on my iTunes on shuffle, so thought I might as well post it. Really enjoyed this when it first came out.

Sparklehorse - Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot (1995)

Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot - Sparklehorse - Spotify

Sparklehorse was one of those bands that was basically one man with a rotating backing band. Sadly that man, Mark Linkous, shot himself in a Nashville alleyway earlier this year, but he leaves behind some beautiful albums.

This is his first as Sparklehorse, and while his 2nd and 3rd were more successful (commercially and critically), Vivadixie... remains my favourite. Named after a dream he had about a Civil War Confederate submarine lurking off the East Coast, it contained all the elements of his music I came to love; a fragile halting beauty, creaking straining sounds and scratches, an almost innocent yearning and occasional bursts of rage. Apparently his vocals on many of the songs are so hushed and gentle because his wife was asleep upstairs when he recorded late at night in his rural Virginia studio. The background/history of each song can be read here.

Personal favourites on this album are tracks 11 (Most Beautiful Widow In Town), 7 (Saturday), 1 (Homecoming Queen) and 14 (Someday I Will Treat You Good).

Good pick SecondFig.

Must say that I'm not a fan of Lakeman so I didn't enjoy yesterdays album. Or the Ozzy one for that mattter.

Listened to the Seth Lakeman album, I remember when it came out a few people recommended it to me, but never got round to listening to it.

Must confess though, it just didn't grab me. It was pleasant enough, made decent background music while I was working for a bit yesterday, but it's not something I can imagine wanting to listen to if you know what I mean.

I've not posted here for a good while but this thread has me intrigued. I listened to a few songs from the Sparklehorse album which were alright, although if the album kept going at that slow tempo i'd probably fall asleep half way through. Probably came at wrong time too since a lot of what I'm listening to at the moment is very textured and complex. I'll definitely download it and see how it goes.

I'll reccomend one album for now which I think is one of the most perfect things I've ever heard, certainly the best double album I own. A lot of people label it with this stupid 'pronk' label which is meant to be some kind of mash of Prog Rock & Punk and while there are certainly elements of both genres, I think it's just a psychedelic pop album at heart. Anyway, call it what you want, it's fecking amazing IMO.

I've bolded my favourite tracks from the album, but honestly I would rate every song 10/10 such is how highly I regard this record. I don't expect anyone to like it very much but the least I can do is get it out there 'cause it sickens me how poorly known & recognised they are.

Last time I checked the whole album is on youtube if you want to check out any of the tracks.

I don't know - what is displayed on the Sparklehorse post? It says "Today 00:24" for me. The albums normally get posted just after midnight UK time.

I didn't really enjoy the Sparklehorse album for some reason. It was a little odd, when each track started it sounded as if it would be something I would like, but I quickly found myself getting quite bored of each one. Maybe the album's more of a grower, but there wasn't much there that makes me want to give it a second chance. I'm debating on whether to add it to my playlist or not just in case...
