Listen to 1000 albums.

Certainly the case with me and this one. Only two tracks in and already thinking I really should've heard this by this point in my life! Sounding very good so far.

Just finished listening to Born Under A Bad Sign, and really, really enjoyed it. I definitely intend of listening to that one again, great choice Ivor.

A bit different than the recent ones.

One of my favorite albums/artists in recent times.

So yeah Onra is a French beatmaker, he made this album from old Chinese and Vietnamese vinyls which he picked up in flea markets on a trip to Vietnam, the land of his grandparents.

Yeah, I haven't heard more than 'Born Under a Bad Sign' for years. I was listening to John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers (with Eric Clapton) a few months back - Albert blows them into the next century (except for the cheese steak tacked on the end)

Well that was a nice little trip from me listening to Filles de Kilimanjaro via vuvezela to next stop is Vietnam. It started off as sonic art installation as much as album (not an accident given the title) but ended up being excellent whatever it was.

I'm enjoying this thread so far. That Onra album is pretty sweet. I'm obsessed with the 58 seconds that is the track 'War'.

Love this.

Nice choice Nilsson, really enjoyed it. Didn't really know what to expect going in, so had a pretty open mind and thought it was a nice album. Yet another added to my playlist.

Hmm this isn't proving too fruitful for me. A nice diverse range of music, but unfortunately I've not really liked any of them too much yet! Maybe a day isn't long enough to appreciate some music

i know i wont love any at first listen, but if some make a fair mark i keep it and put it on a big mixed playlist of new music.

and phil, smashed likes finnish death metal.

Pretty much exactly what I do. On first listen it's all about whether you hear something that intrigues or not.

Can't listen to today's, I only get a preview it seems on Last.fm so not enough to gain any real impression.

What the hell, that is not Nico!

EDIT: Oh, that's the album title. Anyway, someone is trying very hard to sound like Led Zeppelin. (And it isn't Nico.)

I edited my post of yesterdays album to make it easier for people to listen to it if they still want to - it's definately worth a listen.

Always had a soft spot for "No Rain" as a teenager, there's something very sweet and almost apologetic about the lyrics and as something of a wallflower I identified with a lot of that song...

Not sure I liked Hoon's voice so much stretched over the an entire album, what's quirky and charming on one track began to wear after 4 or 5 songs, but there were some nice moments within Nico. Strangely I wasn't really impressed by the "ripped" version of 'No Rain', the production removed a lot of the bedroom charm of the original. Also wasn't too keen on "Soul One" which sounded too much like a band trying to write a Ten-era Pearl Jam song on acoustic guitars.

To my surprise though I did like the slightly leftfield (for Blind Melon at least) "Hell", strangely for an alt-rock band attempting a bluegrass stomp it had an innocent guilelessness that I thought a lot of the other songs lacked.

Overall though I think I'll just stick to the nostalgia of "No Rain", wasn't really won over by the rest.

Oh, and as I've mainly been lurking in this thread 'til now - Chinoseries is an awesome album. A friend recommended it to me last year so it wasn't new to me here but I really love that album, especially (if predictably) 'The Anthem'

Not a big fan of Blind Melon. That No Rain song did my fecking nut in.

I'm never on around midnight so I doubt I'll get any of my shite on the playlist. Good idea though :clapclap:

Burndogg; any chance of editing the original post to list all the albums that have been done? Makes it easier to avoid duplicates and also just interesting to see the types of albums people are putting forward.

Just about finished Nico, not overly impressed really. It has moments that I really enjoyed, and I can imagine some tracks growing on me in time, but not great on first listen. I think I'll add it to my playlist, give it a second chance, because there is something there I like. Agree with SecondFig, not sure I like listening to his voice over the course of a whole album, so it might work better mixed in with other stuff on my playlist.

I'll give yesterday's a go later on if I have the time, cheers for finding some alternative links, decorativeed.

Having lurked for the first few, I give you some Astronautalis.

A charming skinny white kid from Florida who started out battle rapping - he turned to making songs after getting absolutely destroyed at Scribble-Jam one year. He's been described as "if Beck were a decade or so younger and had grown up more heavily immersed in hip-hop", combines elements of hip-hop, shoe-gaze, and Modest Mouse style indie and raps about the War of Independence, 19th century nautical novels, early blasphemy trials and grifters.

This is his 2nd album (first was self-released) and came out in 2006 on Fighting Records. Effectively a concept album, each song was written about a dream, it's less immediate than his newest album but it has a lo-fi beauty that (in my opinion) his last album lacked. Personal favourites from this album are tracks 7: Barrel Jumping , 2: Meet Me Here Later and 9: Skeleton.

Undoubtedly not to everyone's taste, but then that's kind of the point of this whole venture, right?

PS - Oh, and he's awesome live - one of the best shows I've been to in years.

PPS - And his name was a combination of his two favourite things, astronauts and nautilii, showing why you shouldn't pick your rap name when you're 14.

That's a truly exceptional album! Agree with you on track 7, that was stunning, had to go back and listen to it a second time straight away (something I'm trying not to do with this thing). Quite hard to pick out any other highlights, there were so many. On first listen, this would be my favourite album suggested so far in this thread, a definite addition to my playlist. Brilliant choice SecondFig.
