Man Utd and Man City academy players at centre of age-fraud claims

The Caf has reliably informed me multiple times that this doesn’t happen anymore and anyone suggesting it does has prejudice towards certain parts of the world.

This is great news, means they're ready for the first team!

Are you kidding me?

Pay attention to what it happening in our country before making shitty comments please

United and City will be well aware of the potential implications of an age-fraud scandal involving their academy players and there is no suggestion they have knowingly enabled such cheating to take place. But they do face questions about whether they could do more to ensure such cheating and other related offences are not occurring, particularly in light of the evidence to have emerged. As does the FA, given at least three of the players in question have played for England at youth level.

I’ve got no idea what you’re talking about but anyone suggesting this previously about specific players that look older than they’re registered age was told there was no evidence of age doping and there’s only a couple of cases that actually hold up.

Can the clubs be blamed for this? it's not the club who told them to fake their ages, even if it's true.

If so I don’t even know who punishes us. It can’t be the FA as they’re guilty of the same thing by them appearing for England.

It's worth saying that even in this case, we still don't know that the allegations "hold up".

The primary hard evidence cited are photographs indicating they had played football in their homeland in a much older year group than the age they purportedly would have been at the time.

But it's difficult to judge that without additional context, as kids who are much more talented than those around them often play at much older age categories.

African children travel to the UK to claim asylum and are given an adjudicate age. They are often given ages much older than their actual age because of institutional racism.

They, while being children, are then put in camps and shared spaces with adults, sometimes having fled actual slavery in Libya.

There is even a profit motive in the system to do this.

I get you're talking about football but it's a serious issue in our society.

“Telegraph Sport is not naming the players involved because the photographs and other records do not prove their stated ages are false and because some or all may still be vulnerable minors.”

Don’t know all the facts but not a fan of stories like this. Make a headline with two big clubs (ish for City) named, but also say the information they’ve seen doesn’t prove it.

Agree, it’s like they’ve done half a job. Why break a story before getting to the bottom of it? Wouldn’t that be what a proper journalist does?

To put the burden on the clubs and FA to prove it and try to be more substantial in their methods to ensure this isn't happening?

But they’ve thrown out a half assed accusation in the first place. How about they prove what they’re alleging, rather than we prove that it isn’t happening.

I had no idea this was even a thing, and I was specifically referring to footballers who have birth certificates saying they’re 16 but in reality they’re 28, but thanks for the education in the matter.

There was something on either reddit or twitter a few months ago where someone did a bit of a deep dive on this with I think 2 of our players and there seemed to be pretty solid evidence they were a bit older, will see if I can find it but presume that prompted this Telegraph investigation.

@Gungerz I think

Reading the article, they're not really accusing United or City of anything but they're reporting on supposed evidence which has been put out on other platforms. They've been very careful not to make any accusations.

They don't need to prove anything either whereas City and United would.

Genuine question - what is institutional racism in this case. You can PM to avoid wider discussion on this side topic.

Ah the United pair and City player pictured participating in an U15 tournament in an African country back in 2019 and with the United pair supposedly having their D.O.B as 2010.

Would be embarrassing as two of the three have played for England.

Trust me bro!!!

Lack of policies addressing adultification.

The age assessors tend to have difficulties with the expected age of puberty, determining the age by looking at the faces of the children with darker skin, and can sometimes make assessments based on incorrect expectations of the body shape and development in aspects such as body hair of the children.

They also sometimes completely ignore evidence brought by the child of their age when they have passports or birth certificates on them because of inherent scepticism and perceptions of the parent country.

That's the opposite of what is happening here. The argument is they've been made younger not older

It’s sad. I’m Nigerian and it pains me to say this but age fraud is rampant in all sectors, not just sport. Many don’t even see a problem with it.

Heck, our president is even guilty of it.

It’s terrible.

I remember these rumours surfacing a few months ago. It's very tricky to navigate. Remember that young fella at Lazio? Was his age proven?

Sounds similar to when immigrants kids move to the US. They are placed a grade behind because they are supposedly not well educated.
