Film Oscars 2025

Regarding Dune, I saw some Oscars commentators say there is a feeling that (as with the LOTR films) the final installment of the trilogy would be the big Oscar winner, as recognition of the entire trilogy.
Ah fair enough. A bad year though this year so maybe should’ve ignored that.

I personally thought Mikey Madison's performance lacked substance, she was great fun in Anora but played a loudmouth for 2 hours with little depth. She's got charisma and she's very believable in the part, but I (personally) won't remember it as a performance for the ages.

Think a loudmouth for 2 hours is unfair. She was a skilled flirter when she needed to be at the beginning, she got loud and ballsy when she needed to be, when she saw everything falling apart and when threatened by Russian henchmen types, but it also brought out her defence mechanisms which you must need in that profession. For me though all that was necessary to give us that final moment at the end of the movie, where all of that was stripped away and we saw what was really going on. I thought she was phenomenal and far deserving over Demi - agree Substance was just pretty weak with a frankly nonsensical premise to begin with.

Only if you consider that is nominated or wins is an accurate representation of cinema that year (which it isn't).

I took think 2024 was a bad year for films.

Out of interest, what's your top 3/5/10 or whatever?

We definitely differ on that, but glad you enjoyed her performance!
