At which point we'll have written off yet another season
Not sure where I read it, but think it was said Southgate wouldn’t discuss the job with us before mid august out of respect for his England job. This reprieve for Erik seems to make Southgate a more likely possibility in the short to medium term for us. If EtH fecks it by Christmas i could see Sir Gareth of Southgate being parachuted in.
I just hope Erik smashes it so I don’t have to spend two seasons watching that boiled horse bungle a rebuild for us.

Surely ETH is the most backed manager I’ve seen and has to deliver improvements next season? I don’t know if I can take it if we start our next season like we did our last against Wolves.

Ten Hag doesn't deserve the stay of execution but I am relieved that the Southgate stuff can die a death (for now).
I hope next season he will be as pragmatic as he was in his first season, and in the Cup final. Instead of send us out with the donut formation that saw us conceding 20 shots a game for months on end.

These lot have been in since the start of the year. I'm sure they could've decided internally by the end of the season whether to keep him on without having a drawn out process following the cup final result if they really felt he was good enough.

Right decision. Get him a first choice CB, Neves to partner Mainoo, an extra attacker along with some defensive backups and I don't see why he wouldn't get at a minimum of 3rd next season. The guy has already shown he can get the team to qualify for champs league, can win trophies against the best and beat the big boys. With the right signings I'm fairly confident he can get us competing at the top in a season or 2.

The funniest thing about everyone being relieved about it not being Southgate is that this decision imo makes it more likely that Southgate will manage United soon

If this goes tits up, there's no more hiding behind 'it's the glazers fault'. The fanbase once again vocally made their opinion clear, the club wilted/followed it - now the entire football can watch and see if the fanbase has half a clue.
I wanted him gone, but I'll back him.
Ironically, the fact that they did the review and it took as long as it did makes me feel they really took their time to investigate and come to the conclusion that he can be a good coach for us.
However, there aren't any excuses for Ten Haag regardless of what we do in the market.
The football we play has to be good this season from the very start. We cannot afford to waste another season.
INEOS have taken a massive gamble in keeping him, so they have to act as fast as possible if it doesn't seem to be working early. For me, this means as quickly as a sack in late September.
Ten Haag, regardless of who we buy, has the show that he can play football that produces chances and keeps us in control of games. No more ridiculous risks. His first season had spells of that type of football and for any support, he would have to show that United can dominate games consistently against teams as soon as preseason. He's starting with negative credit in the bank. He has to prove he's actually a good coach now.
My thoughts are that we are keeping him on due to belief in what he can offer in terms of the football side of things, based on his first season and his bringing through of some of our younger players. This decision means that they believe that he can coach, and they will remove the responsibilities on his plate regarding squad management and transfers. There are no excuses for him. I feel he played on the sentiment of our fans, which kept him his job. That wouldn't fly again...this time, if he doesn't step up, it would ruin his career. There won't be any "United didn't give him a chance" nonsense.

I wanted him gone earlier in the season and he is very lucky to survive what was a catastrophic season by any manager. That said, I'll back him for the new season, but my optimism is pretty low.

They conclude from a thorough internal and external audit that they want to stick rather than twist.

1) FA cup final proved the players are still behind ETH.
2) New structure behind him and maybe not rely on ETHs contacts for signings?
3) New signings to hopefully play closer to his vision of football (successfully).
4) Shaw and Martinez back fit after a pre season to play from the back better. Mount will hopefully play a bigger part and our young players are one season older.
5) Keeper hopefully settled in and a strong pre season.
6) Remove the dead weight players who aren’t buying into what the manager is doing.
7) Players that he has improved like Dalot can hopefully kick on again.
Lots more too, obviously tons of concerns too that I am sure the doom mongers will cover in laborious detail.

Everyone including their cat, dog and ETH knew his position was under massive scrutiny. It was an objectively bad season. Even someone as stubborn as ETH (with his tactics) has the self awareness that he couldn't just command 100% buy in from the new board. If he's sane, he will be breathing a sigh of relief knowing he's got his job 'back' and also probably feeling a little vindicated, which imo although unjustified (i.e excuses about injuries etc), I totally understand. You've got be a little unhinged and arrogant about what your doing right (or wrong) to be believing in yourself at this level.

I wish he got sacked, but he has to be kept on a tighter leash now. He is a decent coach, however his stubbornness cost us a lot.
