The only way any manager going forward should have a say is the very end, only if there are two or three equal players that have been scouted and vetoed by those above.
Eric we have scouted a CD and we have narrowed it down to A and B, who would you prefer? That should be any managers only input.
We need a structure that puts scouts at the forefront and then we need to invest in such a network by poaching the best in the game. The decision on who buy should be made after narrowing down the list provided by scouts who would have looked at things like technique, attitude, temperament, physique etc so that we are assured that from a list of say four players they all meet the minimum parameters set out in the player specification.

There is no way a player like Antony should ever be high on any list for recruitment by United. Bring in scouts you can trust and when a manager suggests a player tell him no, our scouts say he won't make it in this league because he lacks A, B and C. The DOF is the responsible for making sure the scouts assessment is on point, he can seek a different opinion if he wants but that should be the basic way we do things.

I cannot blame him. This is the third time that we allowed our highest paid player walk on free. We subsidised the salary of 2 of them and we allowed the other to walk on free. Thank god that Murtough has renovated the whole thing. Murtough madness indeed

- Make clear profiles of every position in the team.
- Make a list of potential players in every position in every possible age group on every continent.
- Follow players from 16 years on.
- Create several shadow teams.
- Decide if you need young talented players or older established players. Look at the different lists.
- Present three players to the manager he can pick from if you need players for a position.
- Also scout randomly for the hottest young players you can still develop in the player profiles you need for the team.
- Trust the scouts (long term) instead of the manager (short term).

The last two points are right on the money, get the scouts you can trust and invest time and trust in them. The results will follow. What's clear is that this manager is a poor judge of talent or he underestimates the challenges this league brings because how can a manager be wrong about so many players he has managed before?
Follow players from 16 years on...? Far far too late.
You can always start now and four years, by which time a player is 20 and on the crisp, is not too far away.

In the UK scout earlier ofcourse and bring them over to the academy. But from the rest of the world it’s no use getting them earlier then 16. It’s no use to follow or get 13 year old Brazilians who happens to be good at that age, it says nothing about their development later on. Everybody who works in sports youth development, which I do, knows that young players who are very good at a young age don’t have to be the best players when they get to the adult age.

We are currently a long way from that, with ETH free to fish in his tiny Dutch league pond. A lot of clubs consult managers, thats as far as it goes. If the scouting and recruitment team do their jobs, managers shouldnt have an issue. The top clubs are now simply to large an organisation and global scouting too complex for a manager to have much of a view.
Can I just check, do you think a manager should have no say on transfers? Because I said it should work together and you've responded like you disagree.

Then what's this huge structural overhaul that's needed to enable Ten Hag to flourish? That's what we keep hearing about lately. Ten Hag isn't responsible for transfers and we need to see what he does with some amazing magical structure working above him. Only then can we truly judge him.

But if he's still going to have a say in who we sign, where's the evolution here? What difference does it make to any part of his job? How would it change anything about his subpar management?
So you think a manager should have no say?

So just so I understand,

Jim (part owner), Sir Dave (Ineos Sporting Director), Jean-Claude Blanc (CEO TBC), Dan Ashworth (Football Director TBC) and Paul Mitchell (Football Director TBC).. correct?

Would certainly be a huge step up from previous years.. if we can get all of these in it would be absolutely massive.
Mitchell is a recruitment specialist. Ashworth is more of an über-Murtough.

Still think he will have a cooling period if he gets out of Newcastle. We will also have to pay Newcastle to take him ?

If he’s on a standard employment contract you’d imagine it’ll just be notice period etc but they won’t want him having say in the future of the club/know their plans so would probably put him on gardening leave for his notice.

But of course, this is football we’re talking about. Money talks.

Jesus Christ.

Or, you know, maybe it was a little cold.

He’s just agreed to acquire 25% of a business for a metric feck-tonne of money, if any of you believe for one minute he’s not carried out extensive financial due diligence and knows exactly what is going on then you need to give your heads a wobble.

Saudis don’t need money!

Totally agree, he would have had a complete plan in place 6 months ago after extensive due diligence, the only thing that’s changed is how bad ETH has managed the club and how many extra players need to be jettisoned out of the club this winter and in the summer?

I do not think so, he is not a footballer. So it is probably just an x-month notice based on the contract, albeit the worry might be that he has a non-competing clause for x months, which might need negotiating. Likely no one knows.

Newcastle didn't pay to Brighton when they got him, right?

I think they did.

There will be compensation as with managers.

Cheers ! Hopefully everything works out soon.

Managers are on fixed terms like players. Like Raven said, you’d imagine compensation would be to do with waiving non competes etc or paying up a notice period.

I would think his gardening leave will be quite long. Looking online, he resigned from Brighton in February and his gardening leave didn't end until November. Newcastle ended up paying £5m to Brighton in order to allow him to start working earlier.

You would expect Ashworth's notice period to be be a similar length of time and I'd imagine the club would want him to be in position as soon as possible so we'll likely pay Newcastle to release him from his contractual agreement.

It's quite funny actually, just seen an article how apparently Ashworth worth and Mitchell were shortlisted in our upcoming restructuring....in 2018. It then took us another 3 years to actually do anything when Murtough managed to get himself the job.

Missing a trick by not having @LuckyScout78 amongst those.

Yes. Could you not contact Sir Ratcliffe to include me in United scout team.
I will easily say yes to be a part of Nice scouting team too. Then switch and move to United's scout when it needed.

So if anyone has contact and relation to Sir Ratcliffe, United current scout team or what relate to those area of club.
I am 100 % ready to contribute ;)

@Berbaclass, please pass this onto muppetiers and onwards to Jim.

Not a lawyer, but I think the maximum one in the UK is 6 months.

To be honest in most cases these non compete clauses are unenforceable. If these sort of roles are your key skills, trying to say that a person cannot work in their chosen profession for a sustained period basically means they cannot work.

In the IT industry for example these are put in to frighten people but are often overturned.

NDA and gardening leave are another matter entirely though. If he has 3 months notice and is asked not to turn up to work during that period but continues to be paid, he cannot work for someone else during that period.

You're in luck, @LuckyScout78.

@vanderpants works at United and I'm certain that he can get you an interview no problem.

This is quite exciting if we get Ashworth and Mitchell. I would love to see us mercilessly slash the wage bill and get rid of the big time Charlies. Loan a few young players out to Nice like Hannibal for example. I assume with Mitchell and Blac our knowledge of the French leagues will skyrocket. There are bargains and instant starters there if we can manage them correctly. It can also open up the Brexit rules by parking a few amazing 16 year olds from around the world at Nice and so on. Our sphere of influence should finally match our financial outlay. Hopefully we can also finally show the really driven players that we are serious about winning again and things will slowly turn.
