27 year old journeyman player who has been average throughout his entire career but shone for 2 weeks at a World Cup. Highest level he’s ever played at is Fiorentina before that he’s been a squad player in Holland and Belgium.

I am a little worried about the 'good world cup' buy vibe.

The fact they’re only asking for 20 odd million speaks volumes

Wasn't the the one who really stood out in the Europa final that West Ham won?

Harsh though. About to turn 27 which is my main hesitation, but he has shown a very good level for Fiorentina and is a positionally sound DM who is a very strong passer from deep, progresses play really well and is press resistant. If he was 2/3 years younger I'd love his profile, but even still it's a very good versatile midfielder to be part of the group.

Even better to fill the squad with players questionably worse?

Whatever else, bringing in Amrabat for either Fred or McTominay would certainly mark a significant improvement in terms of technical ability and ball retention. I would argue that even if he's not particularly better than them in an overall sense, that shift in the qualities we have within the squad would in itself improve us.

He was Verona player of the season before moving to Fiorentina. He helped them to 9th place finish then he has been pretty solid for Fiorentina. They reached the conference league and Copa italia final last year. He’s 90% passer averaging 50 passes per game on top of having the intensity and defensive game. And is 26 btw.

we need a backup for Casemiro, if Amrabat is not it then who?

Why hasn’t he played at a higher level then? why are they only asking for 25m?

The benefit of Amrabat will be that he’s a genuine DM unlike ‘McFred’ so we’ll have proper cover for Casemiro but I mean if that’s the bar to play for United then I don’t know

A 19 year old who got relegated with Southampton

I don't know what caused this "Mandela effect", but every time I watched him he was the one responsible for his team's playmaking efforts. Because he isn't shy of duels and won't get bullied like Eriksen, that doesn't make him a "destroyer" type of midfielder.
If we play him with Mainoo, it looks to me a Seedorf-Davids like partnership.

Most of the defensive midfielders or deep lying playmakers need experience to reach their prime. Amrabat is at his prime right now and people need to understand that.. Lavia is punt that we currently can’t take and on top of that he needs 2-3 years to gain experience by playing every week. At the moment we can’t promise that.

Presuming he’s fit he’ll be playing every week at Liverpool. Said it earlier but I believe his potential is that high 50m will be a bargain. City have a 40m buyback next summer they’re 100% taking that option if it’s available.

At what level was Fernandinho playing when he was 26?

I don't agree regarding his recovery pace. I don't think he's quick or fast at all. Look at the video vs Mbappe. Mbappe is far gone, slows down and lets Amrabat catch up with a good tackle. He isn't quick at all.
No he is pretty quick. I have seen him keep up and compete with the likes of Dumfries, Kostic etc who are genuinely fast. He covers a lot of ground mopping up on the channels.

Wont compare him to Mbappe, even Walker was left for dead by him, but for a deep lying midfielder he is plenty fast

Contract expires in a year is my guess. Some players are late bloomers, no harm in it. He looked great at the world Cup, and then Fiorentina wise his stats profile looks excellent this past season.
  • 93rd percentile for passes completed (quantity)
  • 97th for success rate
  • 97th for progressive passes
  • 98th for passes into final 3rd
  • 99th for long passes and completion
  • 89th for touches (shows he loves to get on the ball)
  • 90th percentile in successful take ons
  • 93rd in carries
  • 84th in miscontrols, 62nd in dispossessed which are both very good numbers for a midfielder who is on the ball a lot and likes to move with it
21/22 looked very good too, and just clicking through the previous years it seems like that's the season he made a step up to dominating in the Serie A (so would've been when he turned 25). We know he's a DM and he has respectable defensive metrics (though I always think those are tougher to quantify than on ball metrics). He's basically a DM who is that first phase passer, deep playmaker who is both press resistant and can provide dynamism in there, and has shown it to a dominant level in the Serie A despite playing for a mid table side.

There's a ton to like about what he's shown so far and I do think he'd be less a backup and more a genuine competition for the starting 11, depending on opponent, playing deeper next to Casemiro (maybe pushing Mount or hopefully not Bruno wide right).

I always think that if a player is dominating the analytics in what he is supposed to do relative to the league, then they are for sure good enough to make the step up to a tougher league. Doesn't always work like with Sancho, but much less likely at finding a dud.

I totally agree with this, even my Liverpool friends are worried about this, he’s a kid, for me signing amrabat Is like when the scousers signed Gini, was he a world beater no, but does he slot in and do a job yes.

There’s a reason why Lavia will start for Pool because they’re moving Fabinho on. Casemiro is the best DM in the league along with Rodri so he won’t be a starter. We just bought Mount and most likely the starting midfield is Case/Mount/Bruno. We need a backup not a starter.

You really should do your homework before posting.

From 25M to 30M to 35M now it's 50M. It would surprise me if some journalist start quoting 60M.

Case will be 32 this season how long before he needs replacing? He missed a ton of games last season and those last games he looked exhausted.

We should be signing a longer term player who can push for a starting spot not more crap for the bench

The stats tell a good story.

It's a cheap signing that can play deep in midfield, offer some defensive cover (even if his skillset is more in passing). ETH knows exactly what he's getting as he's worked with him.

It's not to do with getting the best mid or best potential available unfortunately. It's purely pragmatism and working to a budget. Selling players that have little role in the setup and signing one that does, for more or less a straight swap. Not inspiring but it's smart management.

If DM was more prioritised in this window this probably wouldn't be happening and somebody like Lavia or another higher ceiling would, but we don't know what money we've got so they're keeping a cheap buy on the back burner. It's a bit of reading between the lines but it's kind of obvious what's happening. He sees Amrabat as a steady hand that will be available at the end of this window. It'd be lovely to be in for the biggest talents but that's not where we are with this last signing after spending 150 million quid.

Ok what did I get wrong?
Again look at his stats for last season. He was a volume passer in the highest percentile for fiorentina. His game was pretty much pass, pass, pass which is why people are likening him to michael carrick.

"..Amrabat is a high-volume passer within the Fiorentina system and he does so with a high degree of accuracy.

Amrabat is regularly involved in Fiorentina’s circulation of possession, as well as having a very high overall progressive passing distance. He understands how to dictate the tempo of a game whilst possessing the ability to break the lines.

Ranking in the 94th percentile for touches in the middle third in Europe’s top 5 leagues, Amrabat is the hub of what La Viola do with the ball and ultimately makes this possession-centric system work. The Moroccan also specialises in medium and long-range passing. This allows him to diversify his style of ball movement.

Statistically, Amrabat is genuinely one of the best distance passers in Europe, both in volume and accuracy. He’s adept at sitting deep and spraying passes all over the pitch whilst also providing the defensive reliability required of a deep-lying midfielder.

He is very capable as a passer in advanced positions, especially as Fiorentina retain possession at such a high rate and enjoy sustained possession in opposition territory. He’s then able to use his tremendous vision and high-quality technique to exploit passing lanes and deliver excellent progressive and penetrative passes and crosses from the half-spaces.

Amrabat’s value goes beyond just his passing. The Morocco international is also a strong ball carrier, using powerful runs and close control to evade pressure. Standing at a reported 1.85m tall, he possesses both the size and strong frame to win duels regularly and cover plenty of ground with the ball..."

Amrabat and Casemiro are very different players. Rather that rotating the two to avoid fatigue, I think EtH would use one or other based on his team tactics for that day.

Amrabat is a lot more similar to De Jong. Only thing he's lacking is key passes. But with Mount and Bruno in the team, I don't think that matters too much.

Amrabat is also more of a high volume passer than Casemiro. It's a role nobody else in midfield has been able to fulfil properly since Carrick. If he can adapt, he'd be a hugely useful addition in that respect.

Stats make him sound like Carrick-lite who can dribble a bit. If true that’ll be a good signing for us

All I know is that with him inside, opposing midfielders can’t walk through our midfield anymore like in past 4-5 years

Was absolutely terrible at Brugge. Saw him play week in week out and he just couldn't cut it. Haven't seen him play since, hope he's improved.

And we probably will next window, but its clear keeper, striker and an Eriksen replacement was the priority this window.

Case will do fine 1-2 seasons more, especially if we cmget Amrabat that can play for him in the cup games or against «lesser» sides

Improved enough that if barcelona had signed messi, he'd be going to nou camp to replace busqutes.

"...Barcelona have reportedly decided against a transfer for Fiorentina's Sofyan Amrabat after failing to re-sign Lionel Messi.

According to a report from Spanish publication SPORT, Barcelona have reached a final decision regarding the possible transfer of Fiorentina and Morocco midfielder Amrabat following their failed bid to bring back Messi, who is set to join MLS outfit Inter Miami.

The report explains that Barca wanted to team Messi and Amrabat up for next season. The Catalans wanted someone who could provide the legs in a diamond formation, with Amrabat considered to be the top transfer target for that role as he would operate at the base of the midfield. Messi, on the other hand, would have operated in a free-roaming role at the tip of the diamond formation, just behind the forwards. Amrabat would also have been the ideal replacement for the departing Sergio Busquets, who is set to reunite with Messi in Miami..."

He has to be pretty good if we are thinking about selling Fred, VDB & McTominay and only signing him.
I mean, Van de Beek has 0 role, Fred is replaced by Mount and Amrabat would replace McTominay, Mainoo getting a bigger role. So it's fine.

Mount isn't chopped liver...

Also, Donny and McT didn't feature all that much, 1 player is a sufficient replacement for both. Then there is also Mainoo
