Pretty happy with it and it's a midfielder. Hopefully we'll get a goalkeeper and a striker soon.

Good deal, really pleased.

Some of you lot massively underrating Mount. 2x Chelsea player of the season, fair amount of England caps, still 24, CL winner……

£55m is a good price. Christ, look at Rice.

Chelsea always seem doing very well on offloading unwanted players. Man Utd is the exact opposite. Our dear Murtough still can't get rid of the absolute deadwood VDB, Maguire, Henderson.

We can also be looking at selling McT, Fred, Sancho.
Chelsea wanted to keep him?

Not a move that's got me jumping for joy necessarily, however I'm very excited to watch us without the defensive double pivot which is something I would only want to see if it was Frenkie next to Casemiro. Curious how Mount and Bruno will work together, I got faith in our baldy.
I mean that is what we played last season. We didn't have a defensive double pivot.

Yes mate, "unwanted player". That's why they offered him multiple contracts that he has refused.

How? That's a big strength for all three of them. I worry much more about them in possession.
Agree. Off the ball they’re all solid I’d say. Mount and Bruno are Workhorses and Casemiro is just insane at breaking up play. Be interesting to see how well we do in possession, we all know that’s Bruno weak spot. He’s rash in possession, I think Mount may be alright at it.

McTominay and Eriksen had a good chunk of very decent games together. We are talking about being backup for arguably the best DM in the world who plays almost every game. You aren't getting a top player. Your best hope is someone home grown. I agree he's not really a DM, but functionally to be a strong, energetic ball winner next to Eriksen he's as close as we have, so that's why he'll stay unless we can sign someone to be casemiro's backup... Which seems unlikely.

It's not a big deal to have McTominay as a backup player. People overreact because of ptsd of him playing every game. It's not the case anymore.
I'm fairly resigned to us not signing a backup for Casemiro. However, it's very much needed. McTominay is not good enough in my opinion. We managed to scrape by in the majority of our games without Casemiro last season, but it was far from ideal. Someone like Lavia would be smart business. As I say, I don't see it happening though unfortunately.

Such a 'meh' signing. Not the type of midfielder we needed. Mediocre level of ability. If this is our top target, I'm appalled. Begs the question what in the world our scouting department are employed for, if PL players and those that have worked with Ten Haag in the past appear to be our chief targets.
I think millions are wasted here, might as well close it up if we don't use them.

Very good player but a bizarre fee really, considering he was leaving on a free next year and our widely-reported limited budget. Let's hope we actually have a plan for the rest of our key areas needing improvement.

I wonder how many folk thought Martinez, Eriksen and Malacia as a fringe player would be as good as they turned out to be for us. You could add AWB and Rashford to that list as well. Hell, some folk were concerned that Casemiro would be shit from day one because "he can't do anything other than tackle".

But Ten Hag got the best out of them because he knew how to use them. Granted, Antony wasn't great but he had his moments, and his defensive work was handy.

If Ten Hag wanted Mount then I'm sure it was for a reason. It helps that this isn't the end of the window either. This is an early signing, a targeted signing. I'm not saying Mount is going to be world class for us but I'm more positive than negative about his signing and I'm looking forward to the dynamic he'll bring to our team.
Regarding the original post I had quoted, which is basically about big money moves and the divisive opinion, only Martinez/Antony, AWB and Casemiro applies here. Martinez/Antony came with glowing rave reviews from Ajax fans and incredible stats, Casemiro's achievements are enough said even if there were a few but consistent murmurs of age/last paycheck and AWB was a young english talent, who had shown insane athleticism and growth after 1 year in the PL. At worst, the opinion was 50 (in favour/not negative)/50 (not keen/negative) for those.

With Mount it feels 40/60 and it feels more pronounced because (I'm assuming) the majority of the one's not too keen on the move have unlike the above transfers mentioned actually watched him way more regularly in the league and internationally. So in some ways, it's comes from a more informed opinion. That's all I have to say about that because it's done deal now.

My personal opinion is that it feels like an opportunity lost where the floor is definitely raised but not the ceiling. I fully expect Mount to perform 'well' but then I expect our team to perform well anyways after a year of growth under ETH with hopefully better game managing from him/the players and the fact we now know where we stand as a team; it also doesn't hurt that individually we will have the superior players to the opposition 80% of the time. I'm a bit sour but I suppose if I took a step back and realise, perhaps if Mount helps us beat those teams more convincingly (against those said 80% of other 'lower' teams), then it will certainly be another level of progression that I can't be unhappy about. It's just the other 20% and taking another transformative step I was hoping for (not as one single player of course but even then I feel his potential influence seems to be on the lower end).

There's a chance this goes down as one of our worst signings in many years. If Chelsea finish ahead of us next season it'll be incredibly embarrassing.

We now have to keep Fred or McT, or both. We can't go into the season with Casemiro our only defensive midfielder.

The only issue that I have noticed with him is that when he is out of a game, he is completely out. Silent Domination type of out. That's my only worry, I don't know if it was his fault when it happened with England or Chelsea.
I really like Mase, but yeah there were too many games over the years that you had to look at the starting XI before halftime to know he did in fact start. Both him and Pulisic were really good at staying off camera. He does have a motor for sure.

This. Like the player, hate the negotiations.

I'll give you guys a few days to delete your slanderous posts in the other Mason Mount threads and then I am going on a tear-filled rampage of quoting everyone who thinks he's garbage.

If he’s an upgrade on Eriksen then it should be good. We’d have a midfield of Casemiro, Mount and Bruno. Plenty of energy in there.
I'd say Eriksen's more creative than Mount, but Mount is much better at pressing which was the biggest problem with Eriksen. Mount's a decent dribbler too, so gives us someone who can carry the ball more than Eriksen.

Fred can't be the defensive midfielder, I think Mount brings more technical quality to Fred's role as the midfielder who runs around a lot and gives energy. The fact that we have no one to deputise for Casemiro is a concern though given the disciplinary issues he had and the fact that there were some spells during the season where he didn't look as sharp as he did in others.

£10m over the initial bid, which wouldn't even get you a backup keeper nowadays. Plus the two teams above us have secured Kovacic and Rice. We couldn't walk away, what do people want?

The truth will be decided on the pitch but as I am in the doubters camp.
In case our summer will be Mount, a GK and a second tier striker I will fear the worst for our season.

I think Chelsea are the winners here in terms of the fee, but for energy, versatility, "youth" and a goalscoring threat from midfield, I feel this could work for us.

Now to focus on GK next, a ST and a CB this summer. Depending on how many CMs we offload, cap it off with another one there.

Overpaying but that is nothing new to us. Be a decent squad option. Hopefully still more to come in as not convinced he is the quality you’d be pinning all your hopes on for the midfield but certainly a good player to have in the squad.

If we’ve paid the bulk of that up front our business is done until we sell or get new ownership
I don't think we will ever get the specific details (though maybe we will) but I would imagine this is probably spread over years, my guess would be about 20 mill to be paid now. I think one of the reasons we've gone for Mount is the ability to get him on a relatively good deal in terms of spreading the cost and not necessarily spending so much money upfront. There's absolutely no chance we've paid 55 mill upfront. There's money for a GK and Forward so long as we can get favourable deals on good terms in the sense of spreading the payments and not so much upfront

Caceido ;)

No to be honest I think Mount will be a good signing, replaces Eriksen and can also play when Bruno isn't fit, but we are seriously in trouble if we don't get someone who can play when Casemiro isn't there
