Is football cancelled for the next week? | Man United-Leeds & Chelsea-Liverpool postponed

So many critical edgelords who cant fathom why people would care about someone born to privilege has died.

Queen Elizabeth II has been the head of state of Britain longer than most britons have been alive. She has been the head of state since 1952 and lived through WWII and every hardship and uprise of the nation until her passing. England and its surrounding nations have a incredibly rich history that has, wether you want to or not, shaped your identity as a Scot, a Englishman or a Welshman. There isnt a Scotsman alive that doesnt stand up a little bit straighter when they talk about Robert the Bruce. The British isles are littered with castles, medieval gates, cobblestone roads and old stories everywhere you go. The Queen, for all her personal faults, have always been the focalpoint of the nation, and acted as a representative for all of you.

The monarchy quite literally defines you as a nation.

From Athlestan to Queen Elizabeth II, England has always been a monarchy, ruled by both able and quite terrible leaders. Elizabeth II was for all intents and purposes incredibly able, spending most of her life involved in charity work that receives significantly less press coverage than a royal family scandal.

The point isnt to be sad about a old lady you didnt know died. The point is that the Queen is dead, and part of the british identity died with her. Its a strange day for many in England, and the least we all can do is be respectful of that.

So much overreaction on here!! All correspondence so far has been about games potentially being called off for this weekend, even that is not official yet. Why are people getting their knickers in a twist over no football for 2 weeks when no one reliable has mentioned that possibility?

You are preaching to the wrong kind of crowd here. I agree to with for what it's worth, but this isn't the crowd who's gonna share your sentiment.

Nothing idiots enjoy more than getting mad about things which haven't actually happened.

Even if they cancel the league fixtures (which would be pathetic)

Why do they need to cancel the European ones too? Gives English teams a huge disadvantage

Have all the police officers checked in to a depression rehab clinic since the death?
I'm not sure that'll be the reason - I mean, what will they actually be policing? I get if it was her funeral of course- but I'm not sure what there is to police beforehand that will require a significant number of police officers.

Well, you already saw that bizarre video of people crying at the Palace. I expect all over the country there will be more large gatherings of people which we know can lead to unrest when you have others who oppose the monarchy attending. Plus the funeral as has been alluded to.

It's the only logical reason I can think of.

Because at times like this, football really doesn’t matter

I think you're massively overestimating the impact the Queen has had on most of the general public's lives, as are the people who've decided 10 days of mourning is appropriate. It's like they're clinging to the last threads of relevancy. The reality is we'd all have forgotten about it by Monday if it wasn't quite literally everywhere you turn.

The UK can blame itself for where it finds itself. If you hate people and you vote for people that hate people also, this is what you get. A fractured society that looks to blame someone else for most of their problems. And if you think the Queen was the one thing keeping us all from losing our sanity, I'd ask serious questions about how in touch you are.

The reality is we've always turned to sports, cultural events, drinking etc for escapism, the Queen dying is just another celebrity, but this time there's a bunch of ceremony attached because people are desperate to stay relevant.

Good post.

I mean, today's PL2 games have been cancelled even though those can be quite effectively policed by a single semi-retired security guard. I don't think logic has much to do with that decision...

Do Sky and BT plan on refunding the next two weeks of my subscription?

I fully expect a two week refund on my illegal IPTV subscription. I didn’t pay to break the law just for the monarchy to put a spanner in my felony.

I’m talking about fixtures with c. 30k people attending though.

I’m also not saying it’s right, just that it’s the only reason I can think of that makes sense.

if it’s out of respect then it’s daft.

You didn’t touch a nerve. I’m just highlighting your talking a load of bollocks to suggest just because someone is coming across negative at the implications of the queens death, you suddenly assume they worship footballers.

You may worship the queen and the monarchy and be “profoundly shocked” at the death of an old woman who was on her way out. But in my eyes that’s stupidity.

Quite clearly it did. My point stands - you support a football club that doesn't give a **** about you. You're just another fan - but you care...

At least the monarchy has factual historical significance, like it or not.

 aye to you maybe. It's like the idiot on the news who said the energy crisis is now insignificant because of the queens death. It's actually offensive how people are instructing others to feel and act over this.

And I you analyse that factua, historical signings came youll see why a large portion of this forum don’t give a feck about them (at best)

I think you'll find there's a good number of Brits who've been passionate about abolishing the Monarchy for many years. "They've made you a moron" sums up the feelings of many.

@crossy1686 putting on a clinic in this thread. I echo their sentiments and it pretty much reflects how most of the people I know feel about it too

I get that; I'm saying that if the primary concern was policing, there would have been absolutely no need to cancel PL2 fixtures and yet they were cancelled anyway.

Also, the UK has, according to a quick Google search, 160,000 police officers; an average of 60 is needed for a Premier League game. So I find the whole "police presence" argument a little unconvincing, except for the actual day of the funeral.

Just like you support the monarchy and queen who don’t actually care about you as an individual despite you fooling yourself they do.

I suspect UEFA matches will go ahead. They will fall midweek several days after the Queen's passing and before the state funeral. UEFA as well will not feel any of the same inclination "to be seen to be showing their respect", unlike the Premier League and other domestic organisations. The games this weekend will be in doubt because of the desire "to be seen to be showing their respect" and not wanting to get backlash from the usual places for not doing the right thing. The game next weekend will be in doubt because of policing implications in the build up to the state funeral.

How many of those are based in London?

Most people mouthing off about them just come across as bitter and frankly jealous.

Just look at the global coverage and outpouring of emotion, then tell me it doesn't matter. Disclaimer - your mates on Facebook don't count.

Just like you support the monarchy and queen who don’t actually care about you as an individual despite you fooling yourself they do.

But I don't think that.
