Antony | Here we go! €100mill, contract until June 2027, option 'til 2028.

Rooney arguably played his best football after wanting to leave for the first time. Lewandowski had no issues performing for Dortmund when they didn't sell him to Bayern. There are endless examples
Dortmund gave Lewandowski a new year contract on far more money to get him to stay and keep him content. And Rooney was playing up to get the club to “match his ambition” - his bluff got called. He wasn’t joining city for fecks sake.

Ay fecking men. When it was reported earlier we were considering 70m euros Ajax fans were laughing! now look at it.

50/60m was fair and we've even gone above that to appease them, and they're still refusing. It's just nuts.

Agree with the sentiment, disagree with the comparison. Leeds would never have sold us Raphinha for the fee they sold him to Barca.

I feel bad for Antony as his club have screwed him over but I’d be tempted to just walk away from it and leave Ajax to pick up the pieces.

That could be the case yes, but that is the gamble they make. But again, Ajax is very rich, they can make that gamble.
Besides Antony would ruin his career staying 3 more years and not playing.
Yeah that’s true. He will knuckle down eventually. Still think he will speak out against them and harm their reputation for future recruitment. He is not happy with them and sounds like has been months of frustration for him. But he has a contract so…

Well yes, that's why we didn't even try for him. He said that himself essentially he wouldn't move to a rival.

You can see why United are feeling perplexed at them refusing such a huge offer.

That would reflect very poorly on Ajax
It is difficult, because the new leadership has their entire own vision. You can't just transfer their understanding with Overmars to those that are planning the team now.

Hence why, you don't do these verbal agreements, and this is just a possibility again.

Yeah I am sure every latin american talent will refuse to go to Ajax now because they would hate to be in Antonys situation now. The horror.

Which other club will fork up a 20m fee, 3m salary, CL football and a limited buy out clause?

complete nonsense argument

Something else. Dont underestimate the egos at play. Glazers and Murthough or however the fcek he is called need a big signing. He can go panic mode and get that Napoli fella or some washed up Asensio with an insane salary or add 10m and get Antony

From Ajax' side; huntelaar and Hamstra replaced Overmars. They did great with Martinez. If they keep Antony its considered a feat. If they get 100m they are gods too. If they sell now its kinda winky

Ajax aren't really doing anything wrong but on your last paragraph. Getting 80m for Antony would be a massive feat. The risk they are running is that if we walk away and obtain another target then they keep a good player but unlikely to ever get another offer at that level for him again.

Feels like they are looking a gift horse in the mouth and pushing things a little too far. If we pay it great but if we walk away it honestly seems a little naive on Ajax behalf.

We've always known he is a cnut, but there is no problem if he's on your side
Seems he kind of left yours judging by the Romano interview.

It's a tough situation for Ajax, but I think you are forced to sell him now. Keeping will only decrease his value (unless he does a 180 and is happy to stay) and no one except Ten Hag will pay this amount for him anyway.

Isnt Conceicao ready? Or a youth player to replace him?

You can have Jahanbakhsh for 50 euro's!

They must surely be aware of that. Even if they sell him for £40m next window, they will have still doubled their money so perhaps they don't really care.
Losing 30-40m in a course of a year is not something anyone would want, let alone someone running a business for profit. They made a hit with Antony but the next 3-4 players they buy can be a big miss.
I doubt he would even be worth 40m at this point next year. Especially if he throws a strip after the WC.

Ajax has offered Antony exactly the same.

Kane usually hits 30 so yeah, that's quite a drop in production.
3 seasons before that: 23 goals, 18 goals, 17 goals. Quite the drop-off indeed.

Another poster gave another few examples. I'd actually be interested to hear about a 20-year old talented player who was kept at his current club for one more season or so who then performed very badly and lost all his value.

You just seem mad that Ajax aren't being reasonable, to be honest. Which they aren't, but unfortunately for you they have every right to be as unreasonable as they want to in this situation.

I guess the problem with "walking away" is I'm not sure there has been any credible link to right sided players and we have an imbalance in our attack. That combined with the fact this is the manager's number one choice by a distance is probably behind the desperation. I would guess they're not throwing these sums around for nothing, if Gakpo is Plan B then even that is not like for like and they probably don't really want to go to it unless dragged kicking and screaming.

Agree with the sentiment, disagree with the comparison. Leeds would never have sold us Raphinha for the fee they sold him to Barca.
They were essentially forced to as the player refused Chelsea even though the club had agreed to terms with them for a much bigger fee.

Still surprised why we didn't go for him in June. We could have signed him for lesser amount as well and it seems a straightforward transfer. Our clun not only creates confusion for themselves but also for others.

Having said that Ajax's stance is also weird. You will never get such an insane value for him. No one is paying 120m next season. Also they are getting unnecessary heat because of this stance. I can imagine they may have sold if it were some other club. They just may be tired of United and ETH. More of a ego battle as well

Exactly. Everyone surely sees that? So is Ten Haag and all our technical and recruitment team saying - 'In 3 years with the right development we will have the next Raphina. Pay Ajax whatever they want' And the same on Ajax's side are they saying 'Lets hold out we have the next Raphina here. in a few years he will be worth well over 100 mill?'
Why have they gone mental if they think his level is Raphina?

No idea, seems that ETH wants to feel comfortable lining up players he knows and already worked with. It's kinda concerning though because nobody in his right mind would spend 100M on Antony so it's obviously a strong request from ETH.

United's plans don't make sense to me. You already have Sancho and Rashford on the wings, developping these players should be a priority. Then spend 70M on a striker, 30M on a good prospect on the wing and you're good to go. Who knows what will happen with Ronaldo but if he leaves, you end up with Rashford, Sancho and Antony competing for 2 spots and Martial (or occasionnally Rashford) as strikers, I don't understand what they're trying to achieve.

Kane scored 17 goals and assisted 9 times in the Premier League alone the season after he threw a fit, didn't turn up for training, and told every man in the street he wanted to leave Tottenham for City last summer.

This whole "oh he will sulk, he'll run his contract down, he'll be unmotivated" is just scare mongering. Once the transfer window closes, unhappy players simply return to work and get back to business with their tail between their legs.
Usually they do. Kane’s form was seriously affected for a while though.

Those quotes really do not paint Ajax in a good light. They've had plenty of time to prepare for this and they've been offered silly money here. I was a bit indifferent to the whole "maybe aspiring talents might think twice before joining them" but this isn't a great situation. If they've known for half a year that he wants out they shouldn't really be scrambling to buy a replacement 5 days from the end of the window. It's not like they're terribly run like we are.

Though buying Ziyech for 40m now would be ludicrous.

If it weren't for their model of developing players to sell for profit, we could sweeten the deal by loaning them Amad, which would be handy for us too.

Agree with the sentiment, disagree with the comparison. Leeds would never have sold us Raphinha for the fee they sold him to Barca.
They were selling him for the same price to Chelsea. Dan James was also sold to them. Think we might not have city/liverpool type relations with them when it comes to transfers.

You're a head of sense today.

It's so silly!

The funny thing is I can totally see this happening the other way round, which is what's happened to all of our clubs with increasingly regularity in the last few years.

He gets his move. Man Utd and Anthony agree on a 6 year contract. Man Utd do so because if he does become a 100 million standard player, it protects the club against aggressive purchase attempts.

And Anthony does because if he doesn't fulfil that potential in 2-3 years and you're trying to sell him, he gets to tell the club to feck off and that he'll only move if he and his agent can find another club willing to pay his 200k/week salary(or if you'll subsidise the salary). Undoubtedly the player thread will then be full of people calling him a greedy twat and an idiot for blocking the purchase of the shiny new toy from Ajax/ Napoli/ Dortmund/ Seville etc.

Why not put it in the contract?
This is the point. Dortmund signed Haaland with every party knowing he would leave in the summer of 2022 and what he would cost. Either put a clause in the contract or only sign for 2 years if you think it's a 2 year project.

I'd like us to sign him even if we're going to be ripped off given how late it is and I hate defending any employer but him saying it was a 2 year project as evidence that it's unfair they're not selling him is worthless.

Exactly, Ajax hold all the cards.

No they don’t. Really don’t get this argument. Everyone know it’s silly money for the player. If they reject and United walk, it’s highly likely they will never get that money again. Huge mistake in my opinion. They could replace him with someone from the Dutch League and still win the title. It’s not like they will win a European Cup.

Offer them 99. Everyone wins. We didn't "cave" to their demands, per se. Player gets to play. They get an absurd amount of money. What's the problem?

You could argue Ronaldo had quite a dip in 2009, but United still received a world record fee

I doubt he would even be worth 40m at this point next year. Especially if he throws a strip after the WC.
Or he could perform well with Brazil, be instrumental in another Eredivisie win, and help them to a, let's say, CL quarter-final. You just don't know at this point.

They were essentially forced to as the player refused Chelsea even though the club had agreed to terms with them for a much bigger fee.

Which is absolutely ridiculous. Why would they be OK with that? Makes no sense... Barca play with cheat codes, I swear

of course i’m mad this is a manchester united forum and our bids are being refused. sometimes I think you guys forget that this isn’t reddit soccer

Ajax don't want or need to sell. And Antony will fall in line until at least after the World Cup. Right now Ajax hold all the leverage, over us and him. Just walk away and try again in the winter or next summer. Put the money to other use. RB, CM, CF, GK.

Yeah the first two are already GLARING issues for first XI with the third potentially one if Ronaldo leaves

This summer transfer window from a United perspective has been a head scratcher. It seems we went into the window with no clear budget (or budget has suddenly increased after 2 losses), no clear priorities on positions ( (we wanted a cb, lb but now we want a third gk, do we want winger or a CF?, we also want a rb which was not a priority at the beginning) and no clear priorities on players (How can one go from FDJ to Rabiot to Casemiro?).
If we have the budget to spend 70m on a CM and 76m on Antony, why did we keep on hearing that we want to resolve FDJ before doing further business? We could have tied up Antony without it impacting our ability to buy FDJ / or an alternate CM.
From the outside, it seems really mismanaged.

What the feck? They have one of the best youth academies in the entire world. They literally develop superstars on a regular basis.

You're going on about them like they're Dortmund or Porto.
They do?

Even De Jong was signed at 17-18 from another Dutch club.

Who is the last so called super star before De Ligt (and even he is debatable), Sneijder?

Here are all the Academy graduates from the Euros.
Good players, but super stars!?

He's a Liverpool fan ffs , not going to ever get a good faith discussion from a rival fan looking to post on a rival teams forum
