Too many fixated on ’he loves the club’ here. Don’t forget it’s also been reported he is majorly pissed off with the club for the way they have handled this whole saga, for leaking his contract to the press and no doubt for the constant bad mouthing and bashing of him in the media. He’s known for months the board want him out, he’s unlikely to stay where is feels unwanted. In that scenario he could find himself under significant psychological pressure and mental distress, especially if these antics we’ve seen by Barca escalate. The common sense action would be take his money or as much as he can squeeze from Barca and run. This is what I believe is/will happen.
Well said.

He knows the situation at Barca and he knows that his time is pretty much up I'd imagine. If Barcas board have decided that he's surplus to requirements and that they can make most of their money back now, they'll likely take that. They just have to sort things out with de Jong first, I imagine all these things they're doing are to slowly break him down to just accepting the move and leaving flat out. Depends on how strong willed he is to ride it out and get his money

Well it would be likely he would need to give up his original 17m wages, plus another 8m per year of his standard wages. That’s around 40m. I don’t love my work enough to give up 2.5 years of wages. Of course playing football is a passion thing though, and if I was playing for united, and saf comes up to me and says will you take a huge pay cut and forgo what you are owed I might say “sure I love the club”, if he then turns around and says yeah you will now have to move back to lb as we bought Ronaldo, I might say ok, and then he says also I’m buying evra as my first choice lb. At some point you have to question how important you are. I still would have to think about it even if Real Madrid are offering to make me a galactico. I do see the difference to some extent
Sorry to side track but that was what sorta happened under Ferigie. Rooney, Scholes, O'Shea, Wes Brown, Park, all got shaft around different positions making way for new players. Got in and out of team (maybe not Rooney) and earning less money than they could have with other teams. Gosh I really missed the great man sometimes.

What is his agent doing? Surely he should be at least putting some external pressure to counteract all of Barca’s mouthpieces?
He certainly doesn’t seem to be a doing a good job of sorting out his clients contractual issues as seems like this has been an impasse for weeks now - just don’t get the silence?

We also need to be seen to be looking elsewhere now….

Given how this impasse came about it doesn’t appear his agent has covered himself in glory from the get go.

So none of the big hitters got on board with the 'he's willing to take a pay cut'.. what a surprise.

This one could only be more done if he'd shown any willingness whatsoever to leave Barcelona.

But there's only so much time one can spend in a damp cave. Welcome to the dry caves of Manchester Frenkie. Welcome Home.

O’Shea, Wes Brown and Park earned more money at United than they would ever have earned elsewhere man.
And fecking Rooney was prepared to join City such was he love for more money more money over ”love” of a club or the great man.

Brown, O’Shea and Park after leaving the club proved exactly why they stayed at United as long as humanely possible.

Like I said, you can't compare it to your own salary situation. It's a different world. You dropping from 40k to 30k would have a real impact on your life. You pretty much have to move jobs then, not much choice.

De Jong dropping to a level where he's still a multi millionaire is different. It at least allows the person to stay where they apparently love.

I've barely followed this but he's not exactly giving up the £17 million either is he?

I'm sure extremely rich people turn down opportunities to earn even more money all the time. That's the luxury they have. They can chose to earn less and do what they love.

It's simply not a comparable situation to yours or mine.

It's principle, really. Maybe he could donate £17m to charity. Or maybe/more likely he doesn't need to think about it, because he hires people to take care of his finances and their incentive is to maximise his financial situation.

I agree with the essence of your post though, it shouldn't be comparable to the average person. In reality it doesn't work like that though, sadly. I worked in tax briefly years ago, and the rich ones were the biggest moaners/nitpickers over small amounts, regardless of whether they were right or the wrong.

He doesn't need to do anything really. De Jong has a huge contract at his dream club.

Agreed. The 'loves the club' stuff is as obvious a message of 'I'll feck you over and stay if you don't make it worth my while to leave' as you could get in the scenario.

It’s a footballers career, it could be over in 5 years. There’s a reason nearly every footballer, even who shows love for a club, such as Rio, Keane, Beckham and Rooney, went to great lengths to ensure they got paid the going rate for their talent.
Frenkie’s deal now might be his last big one, who knows. Signing a deal now putting himself well below the going rate for his entire prime would be daft as feck, especially as the club he loves could have shown him some love back simply by not signing Kesse, and using that wage to pay Frenkie. They clearly give zero shits about him and his sacrifice during corona.

There is a huge difference to how Frenkie’s life will look between 35-70+ if he earns what Barca want, approx 19m after tax for his entire deal, or the money he originally signed for or would have received from PsG or from United now, approx 39m after tax.

He can keep his place in Barcelona on the second deal, and spend his entire post football career there, maybe from as young as 33 as many central midfielders stop then.

So, probably the umteentht time this is asked, but here we are:
La Liga enforces a wage cap, as far as i understood, this is based on financials from previous season/year. Barca have sold a lot of their «stuff»(future tv-rights etc) to balance the books. If they sell even more of their stiff, could they possibly afford in some way to keep FDJ on current contract, and still register Lewandowski, Kessie et al, or are the alternatives to sell him(even if having to pay out some of the deferred wages) , or a new reduced contract?

Good point, but I think the players you're quoting and the positions they got moved around in suited them as well.

Rooney got moved around a bit but there's not too much difference between a striker & CAM. With Rooney's work rate, he could do either just as well.
O'Shea was always a man of many places and Brown got moved between right back and centre.

Frenkie's role as deep lying play maker is very different from that of a central defender and I think the skills required are very different too.

It's not like he has two new job offers and he's giving up an opportunity to earn more money to take a role he's happier doing, so that analogy doesn't really work. He's already deferred a big chunk of previous year's wages due to covid etc. It's been widely reported that the deferred wages and unpaid bonus payments amount to 17m. Now they want him to forgo those deferred wages and his future contractually agreed wages and agree to a new contract with a 40-50% wage reduction. It makes no sense for him to do that especially when they're bringing in shiny new toys all the time. Also this love talk is completely overblown. It's a bargaining position imo. If he was going to take a paycut he would have already done so.

Exactly this. Spot on.

50m is big and would suffice a lifetime for most of us here

But for them who spend 100k per month on expenses it's only 500 months.

Taxes, shit happens, rainy days, special occasions etc.. it's not that much left.

Unless you have 50m and still living in a modest flat and drives an accord.

I woke up with morning wood for the first time in months today so I am declaring a BIG day!
If it turns out to actually be the day, my penis can be declared a prophet, such as Punxsutawney Phil.

(disclaimer - “BIG day is referring to the transfer of Frenkie de Jong and has no relevance on the actual size of my member. For this scenario it should be seen in the minds eye as a glorious totem of prophecy)

A colossal embarrassment.

The board is acting cheap and ETH can't seduce players like SAF used to do.

Old article on Brown. Could have earned more else where as a first choice. I couldn't find any articles but I'm sure it is the same for Park and O'Shea.
I never felt Rooney was that serious to move to City, he eventually did stayed.
Anyway Jong story short, I do think there are good players willing to be played out of position, making less money under the right circumstances.

Yeah but Dermot conveniently is missing something here. If Frenkwad is staying at Barcelona, is he taking the 50% pay cut and forego the deferred payments? Or is he saying that Frenkie will continue on his current wage? And if so, how the hell would Barcelona reconcile that with registering their new players?

Yeah I think he'll stay there has been no noise recently of him joining up. Not even the obligatory looking for real estate in Manchester.

If he's so enamored with Barca I'm glad this didn't happen
We need motivated and ambitious players not folks ready to play as backup CB because of good weather.

If that prideless idiot wants to stay there at every price move on. Simple as that. And I hope the fact we aren't already actively and with all power looking for alternatives means that he gave as some kind of reassurance that he wants to come. If he hasn't and we still don't look for alternatives then Murthough and Arnlod are even more incompetent than Woodward. He chased the wrong guys often too but not with a squad in such dire state. We simply have to get bodies in up front and in midfield.

Very much agree with this.

Footballers have to make as much as they can in as much time as possible, because their career could be over with one bad injury. De Jong might love Barca, but do you think if he got injured and was never the same player after it, Barca would love de Jong? Nah not a chance. They'd want him gone more than they do now

Rooney stayed, on a quite frankly ridiculous deal

You’ve just proved my point with Wes Brown there, haggling like feck to get paid what he deserves. He could “conceivably” have earned more elsewhere, doesn’t mean he could have, it means it may possibly have been possible. I doubt it though, saw far too many injuries.

Time for the third lever ?

Quite a different scenario with de Jong though isn't it? Those players that Barca want out in the dressing room aren't on a contract that Barca can't afford. They're just players they don't really value or want anymore.

Frenkie is on a contract Barca frankly can't afford and don't want to pay, and see huge value in him that will help finances and free up some FFP wiggle room from what I understand
