He has three years left on his contract. We are not in a position urgently need to sell him. Guehi was one year left on his contract so we cashed in.

If colwill insist on regular play time then loan him to pl club like Southampton who wanted him but no way we sell him now.

This speculation of chelsea will sell him I am not buying it. If so then premium will be more than 30 mn with buy back or first refusal clause would be inserted.So not worried at all.
 
If we sell him, it will be to a club that are willing to add a buy back clause after a couple of years. Southampton are the most likely. They've already signed Tino from us with a buy-back and have just done the same with two City players.

Id probably agree with @Berbaclass that Ake, Kimpembe and Koulibaly are about equal with Rudiger, Christensen, Azpilicueta.

It doesn’t scream title charge or huge upgrade and I’d still say Rudiger is the best of the lot?

I haven’t watched much of any of the 3 potential incomings but I find it hilarious that Rudiger value has trebled since he left. He is a great defender but people talk about him like he was in the tier with peak vidic, Rio, Terry and Carvalho. He wasn’t and is very much replaceable.

It’ll be interesting to see how a brand new defense can manage together though. Definitely age wise, it’s a short term fix and that’s why I cannot see Colwill leaving permanently but the club has done mad business before.

Be interesting to see Rudiger back in a 4. Whenever I saw him in a 4 he looked like his positional play was slightly poor as he went roaming too much. In a back 3 that isn't such an issue as you have cover and can be more aggressive.

Really? He's been with the club since the under 8s; given his quality on and off the ball he seems like a perfect modern 8/10 hybrid.

Personally I wouldn't be dumbstruck if in 4 years time we have a midfield 3 of Gallagher / Rice / Mount - at least on paper and with the caveat that all 3 need to continue on their current trajectory that seems a very tidy midfield in all phases.

I dunno. I think a proactive midfield seems to be the way football is heading, push your game on the opposition and if plan A doesn’t work then try plan A again. Play high and press forward. Rice sinks back and plays beaten the CBS when he is put under pressure.
I see it with Liverpool, City, Madrid and even Ten Hag seems to be completely devoting us to that way of playing. I’m not the biggest fan of Mount but he should allow you some leeway in terms of working hard in Midfield. Rice spoils that a bit imo.

That's a fair point - but I'm not sure the extent to which this might be down to Moyes' tactics and/or the relative lack of quality of WH's CBs on the ball (Zouma in particular was binned by Chelsea due to this failing). If we have the likes of Koulibaly and Silva, who are among the best passing CBs in the entire world, it seems entirely possible to me that Rice would be able to play a bit higher.

On top of that, Gallagher and Mount are both elite elite pressers already (both >20 per game, 97th and 99th percentile in attacking 3rd pressures last season), so for me having Rice sit a little deeper wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing.

That said, I do think it's entirely fair to wonder how well Rice would transition from a reactive side to one expected to control the ball far more - but for me he's generally been pretty good in that capacity for England.
 
I’m not overly convinced with the Koulibaly signing. I hope he’s good but he’s approaching the latter years of his career and has spend the majority of his career in a completely different league. His highlight clip v Salah shows a serious weakness in one v one situations against fast forwards which there are plenty of in the Premier League.

He’s clearly a good defender but the money spent is a bit mental.

Ake is reliable and meets the homegrown quota. He makes sense although again, the money seems high and could impact Levi’s development.

Kimpembe is a huge no from me.

He’s just turned 31 mate, not 35. Wouldn’t say he’s approaching his latter years. And as we’ve seen first hand with 37 year old Thiago Silva, a solid defensive setup can mask weaknesses and extend your career at the top level.

Van Dijk is the exact same age and nobody is saying that he’s old and trending downward ability wise.

He's only about 15 months older than Rudiger and we were prepared to give Rudiger a long term deal, so I don't see any issues there. He's the perfect replacement for Rudiger. I'm less sure about Kimpempe and Ake, so I guess we both agree with MayosNoun there.

To me it's been one or the other. Very comparable players. I wanted Tchouameni last year because his price was about 1/3 of Rice but this summer their value in the market is pretty comparable, with West Ham's asking price being about 10-15m more than Real Madrid paid. He'll probably end up going for less than Tchouameni in the end because the length of his contract keeps reducing the longer West Ham price him out of a move.
 

Some hope there that any Colwill move will not be permanent.

We are forced to pay extra because we were in that kind of position. We need numbers in cb position. And if koulibally will give us quality three years as top cb will make this deal bargain from where we start in this window.

Sterling, ok, he's a big name but Koulibaly and Ake? No chance. Kimpembe? No chance he's a "big name".

We've literally distanced ourselves from the biggest available name (Ronaldo) so I think you're way, way off.

Koulibaly has been talked about for years as one of the best CB’s in the world but no one has been willing to pay the daft money Napoli have been asking. Kimpembe is PSG’s best CB and on a daft salary, he’s a big name. These are FIFA ultimate team players.

Im saying this as someone who would prefer Chelsea to break up City and Liverpools title runs, but this looks like United circa Woodward years to me

Except Boehly isn't the one drawing up targets and playing real life championship manager. I've seen this being said a lot about the Woodward comparison but from what I can tell, Boehly is just leaning on Tuchel and a lot of these targets are actually Tuchel's targets.

If your'e talking about us going after "big names" in football and coming up with Presnel Kimpembe, I guess we have a pretty different definition.

We've turned down the chance to sign Ronaldo, literally one of the best players and biggest names in the history of the game, because he doesnt fit into the manager plans.

Out of that list the "safest" move is Sterling though. Koulibaly the 100M man of the last 6 years might be good but feels like it's a bit late.
Ake and Kimpembe will be a guaranteed waste of money.

Sure but we're not talking about whether or not they'll be good, we're talking about if Chelsea are going with a "let's sign the big name players at any price". Do you think Ake or Kimpembe fit that?

Not really big names but more targetting "big clubs" players so they're big names by association. Not meant as a diss but it feels like lazy scouting. Your primary target was De Ligt and even if he hasn't been stellar, is already considered a big name signing. Was Raphinha a big name signing ? I wouldn't say so but you were prepared to make him one.

We've turned down Ronaldo and are after Nathan Ake but the strategy is to go for big names. OK, makes sense.

Actually I’m worried it will backfire on us after awhile. I’m more worried it will produce results that excite people in the short run, they will call for more, but it could have a deteriorating long term effect.

But then we start getting “bullied” by the most corrupt groups In all world sport. In America we STILL don’t let the white Sox live down the cheating scandal of nearly a hundred years ago. In Italy it’s a routine event. You have tampering on a level not accepted here, and In the case of Madrid actual governments getting involved to secure transfers. And that’s not even considering the Saudi’s ….

So I AM thankful that Boehly isn’t the type of guy like the Glazers or Kroenke to settle for “being at the table” to collect yearly tv money … yeah. He aims (and spends) to win when he gets involved with something. That is surely better than the alternative?
 
They are suffering from the same sort of disease that has plagued us as of late, in that there's little behind the scenes planning and the signings are being left to the whims of the manager. Tuchel confirmed almost as much in the BBC article on sterling today.

The problem is manager's nowadays don't have the ability to be top scouts too, so they end up going for big name players they've heard of or seen before. Like Lukaku. Or ETH going exclusively after Dutch or Ajax affiliated players.
Sterling and Koulibaly are good buys on paper, the later especially, but the former is on a downward trajectory that may well be stopped or continue further. I'd be a bit annoyed if we had spent £50m on him. Familiarity with the 5 at the back system with England does help I guess.

That said Chelsea's squad is an excellent state (CBs aside), so regardless they should be fine. Gallagher in particular I think will benefit from playing in Chelsea's system and will breakout if given games.

Not sure why Boehly is so involved with negotiations etc though. The man runs a fund that has investments in about a 100 businesses, he must either have 3 clones of himself or get no sleep to actively be involved with everything.
