Champions League Quarter Finals (5th - 13th Apr)

I specifically said when Spurs were in the final.

It's still not comparable. Spurs were always a one hit wonder. United fans have had the misfortune of watching not one, but both of their closest rivals sweep up trophy after trophy year after year, and no sign it won't continue for another few years.

If you offered me City to win the CL right now, I’d probably take it.

I have a friend who's a Chelsea fan. 2005 and 2007 permanently scarred him. He loathes Liverpool. He rooted for Leeds against them. Leeds!
Most sensible people dislike Liverpool because of their obnoxious fanbase. They were pretty universally hated even when they fielded Jay Spearing

Leeds rivalry is more historic and entrenched, but yeah you're not wrong.

Okay fine. I won't empathise with your situation next time. All I did was try to draw on a similar feeling when Spurs were in the final ffs. I take my kindness back

I mean, sure that's true but I was trying to empathise by drawing my own experience when I had to watch Liverpool (a team I hate) vs Spurs (a team I really hate) in the fecking CL final. At that stage, we had been an absolute irrelevance on the European stage for years.
I know you were, really quite shit for us seeing Liverpool re-establish themselves as the biggest club in the country, on track for a 7th CL and eclipsing the treble. The stuff of footballing nightmares for Mancunians, want it to be over already

Haha you're cool. It was the part about only United having rivals that triggered me. The impending dread that Liverpool will equal our league titles, or either of them doing the treble, or worse the quadruple has most of us on edge

 Liverpool fans are well renowned for their angelic behaviour.

 You threw fecking pies and cups at Simone a few weeks back. Lets get get in to a game of whataboutism here. Throwing missiles at players is disgraceful end of, and did you see what they were throwing? those plastic sticks on the end of flags could have taken someone's eye out.

Yeah no one’s fans are squeaky clean but dropping cups of piss and shit on Utd fans at anfield in 2006 is probably the worst fan behaviour I’ve seen in a football stadium.

And Neville wanted us to sign Simeone. Let that sink it in.

I'm torn between wanting Atletico to get smashed to pieces and wanting City to fail again. I think seeing City knock them out is currently winning.

Watching those Madrid players sitting on the floor, rolling around in agony for NINETEEN minutes of the last half an hour at OT, was so frustrating. Watching the ref blow his whistle every time a Madrid player was tackled. Or stopping the game while the ball was in play, because an Atletico player was holding their shin. I've never seen such a spectacle in all my life.

Seeing them out of the picture wouldn't be such a bad thing.

Not sure if you live in Manchester but the Atletico fans trashed up Sinclair’s Oyster bar (my favourite pub) so I want them out of the competition ASAP.

I never threw a thing. I was too far away, and besides, if I was gonna be throwing anything at the pitch I'd be aiming for Captain Cranium. Nothing I said is whataboutery, merely pointing out the hypocrisy.

He was for Simeone but against Conte? If true that really doesn’t make sense, other than maybe Conte was available while Ole was still manager. Regardless, it shows that these pundits shouldn’t be taken seriously when it comes to United.

Bit of an up and down performance. Mostly very good first half then very sloppy in the second. That Konate mistake is why I still prefer Matip currently. Konate can be erratic with his defending. We'll most likely get through now with the 3rd goal.

Salah is struggling to do anything at the moment. Apparently he's played more minutes for Egypt than Firmino has for Liverpool this season and it's starting to show. Glad we subbed him off when he did.

When your rivals are Arsenal and Spurs you don’t have to genuinely worry about them winning a league or CL.
Yeah, just think about how many times you guys had to worry about Liverpool, Leeds or City winning the league and/or CL between 1992 and 2011. You’ve really had a really hard time as Utd fans over the years.

Oh wait, no you didn’t.

:D And we've got 21 more years of reading this brilliant stuff. Enjoy.

Pep being the only reason Utd have only won 3 CLs between 1992 and 2013 is my all time favourite.

I wasn't being hypocritical just you implying I was. Just because I'm a Liverpool fan you decided to respond. A fellow United fan commenting you wouldn't bother to point out to them about their hypocrisy.

Would people prefer City to get their first Champions League than Liverpool to get their 7th? Sadly, I think one will happen.

Where there's Bayern left in the competition there's hope

...although it pisses me off they've won it so many times too.

City I guess. Their success feels more hollow although I'm sure that'll change as they catch up with us soon.

I just feel mentally checked out this year. I'm resigned to the fact that City and Liverpool will sweep it all up this year. City 1st/Liverpool 7th/Liverpool 20th, they're all shit outcomes and I think both have more big trophies in them regardless. We should just accept it. Liverpool will probably win 21/22 before we challenge let alone win a title. Doesn't help that Bayern are the only other really good team and they have a young manager. No top Barca or Madrid team around to have faith in.

Should Simeone be fined for fecking off before the handshake? It is becoming a thing with him. There must be some rules about sporting conduct.

Also the guy who was playing about with Jack's hair should have got a yellow. If a city player had done that the Athletico player would have gone down like he had been shot by a sniper.

The failure of proper succession planning post-Fergie has lead us to this: desperately hoping and praying Liverpool stumble, which seems all the more unlikely with each game

If it is between them and the Scousers, I'd too. It would be their first , so it's not a big deal. Similarly I could stand them winning another PL trophy. But Liverpool's 7th European title (while we have 3) or seeing them winning 20th league title, that'd be too much.
A far as i'm concerned, best case scenario - City win the league, and Real or Bayern the CL

Bayern getting back in shape.

Goretzka, Davies, Neuer are back now and they'll probably be better. Lewandowski 100% fit again.

Their defense is still suspect though.

I'd have them at 50/50 with Liverpool and 60/40 against City.

Let's not forget that this Bayern squad is filled with serial winners who have won the lot before. That'll certainly help against a nervous Man City if Bayern make the final

True, but I wouldn't fancy a team getting back in shape against a Liverpool side which are on an incredible run of wins. One can only hope that some of the luck they've had in this run (performances haven't been as convincing as the result) turns the other way against Bayern.

City had the easier game than Liverpool. City game was like a practice game and Liverpools was more physical. Will be interesting to see how this effects Sundays game.

I don't have any hope of Bayern beating Liverpool or City, they are barely getting past Bundesliga opponents right now. Not in top form, let's see if they can first get past Villarreal.

Strangely enough Atletico's defensive stragedy just plays perfectly into City's hands. They always struggle more against teams that actually fight back against them and play with a higher line.

Sitting deep with 10 men behind the ball, they're masters at breaking it down. Not only offensively though, their counter pressing and ability to break up play when they lose the ball is probably the best in the world.

That was the first time Atletico have never had a shot on goal, so that says a lot.

I am surprised how some United fans here are okay with City winning this thing.

Dont you find ZERO European Cups continuing besides their name hilarious?

It's bound to come to be honest.

I look at Chelsea in a bit of worry as a team that could have more UCL'S than us very soon considering how quickly they have managed to grab 2.

Liverpool are already a much better team in Europe than us and for me it's about keeping you guys within some sort of reach even if you are quite far already.

Why? They have never won it under Pep even though they've been a top 3 team in Europe for how long now, 6-7 years? He's bound to feck off some time soon I guess, and I can imagine they will, at least at first, struggle to replicate their consistency that they're showing under Guardiola. De Bruyne isn't getting any younger either.

United fans can stick their heads in the sand as much as they want and talk about "oil money, hollow wins", but that's not how the rest of the world views it. City are gaining a global fanbase with every piece of silverware they collect, and a Champions League trophy would massively boost that even further. I hope they win as less as possible while Guardiola is there and just be a "contending" team once he's gone, not the machine that they currently are.
