I expected Bell to report before week 1, holding out until week 10 is insane!

They are probably one and done and they picked the wrong year to go all in.

The Rams have a lot of young talent. I can’t see them going anywhere any time soon tbh. Will they be as good as everyone says? Depends who you’re listening too. I hear people say they have the best roster in the league. Can’t really argue against that. I hear people say they’re Super Bowl contenders. Can’t really argue against that. Hear people say they’re one of the top teams in the league with an up and coming coach. Can’t really argue against that.

Sure there’s a few who are making it out like they are nailed on for the Lombardi and yeah, that’s overrating them (you can’t nail anyone for that).

Don't understand NFL contracts , how are players allowed to hold out like this ?

Bell hasn't signed his franchise tag, If I'm not mistaken. While the Steelers currently hold his rights he isn't under contract.

If he doesn't show up he won't get paid, but he's not under contract.

Not under contract, but his “rights” are. Which is strange.

Bit like when you retire - for the length of your contract your current team still retain your “rights” and so if you come out of retirement a year later but you had 2 years left on your deal when you retired, your rights are still with that franchise for the year and you’d need to be traded by them before you could go off and play for another team.

So in a strange way, he is under contract. But he’s not too.

I understand franchise tag but I don't understand how after the tag is used Bell is allowed to decide by himself when he wants to come back

Think of it this way - the franchise tag essentially guarantees you the rights to the player. But it doesn’t guarantee you the player.

Normally naturally the forces join the two - you don’t want to not get paid and not play a year and so you’d take the franchise deal. Not to mention it guarantees you a top 5 salary at the position.

Bell’s stance is bizarre to be honest. He might be fresh for free agency, but will he earn as much as if he plays and proves himself again. RB isn’t a position like QB where teams reach for top players. I’m sure he will get paid, but his stance may put teams off.

And sure Bell is one of the best but there are plenty of good running backs which would be cheaper, less risk, and allow the team to build elsewhere.

Yep, a la Beast Mode, it's definitely kinda weird.

Bell’s stance is bizarre to be honest.

Isn't the issue that they tagged him last year without talking about a contract and they did it again this year. He also allegedly said that he wanted to be paid like a RB1 AND WR2.

Running backs are just running backs anyways... easily replaceable

In receptions and attempted rushes Bell is Top 10. He isn't replaceable let alone easily, the Steelers will have to drastically change their play calls.

OK it’s impossible to get a like-for-like replacement for him, but I still don’t see him as being that valuable. They’re going to win the division if he sat out the whole year. And I don’t think he’s the difference in the Steelers being a Playoff team and being a SB team.

Yea Bell does more than a typical RB, he won't be easy to replace.

As an individual yes he’s probably impossible to replace. But running back tandems are the norm these days and what he offers can be replaced by a combination of backs. Not saying they’d be as good, obviously not, but I truly think replacing running backs no matter how good is easier than a lot of other positions on the field.

I think they’ve been trying to talk contract with him in the past but that is all but lost now.

They’d run him into the ground this season and probably give him close to 500 touches or something. I think that’s his main concern at the moment, not hitting free agency healthy.

Yea I don't disagree with that, just look at the number of rookie RBs who slot right in at the top level.

His agent didn't help with the comments he made about the franchise.

Agree with both. The running game depends on so many factors - how good your QB is, how good your o-line is, how much your WR contribute in blocking, etc.

Steelers have good players in those positions and so I think even an average RB would still be productive enough for the team. Replacing Bell’s pass catching IMO is easy, there are so many good scat backs available today.

Obviously, having Bell means you have that unpredictability cos, as he can pass and run, you never know which it is, whereas if you’re rotating backs it’s more obvious what you’re likely to do - you can’t replace that factor. But otherwise, if I were the Steelers, I wouldn’t be overly worried about losing Bell.

So who is everyones sleeper teams for this year?

I quite like the Chargers and The Bears should be interesting now.

Chargers is an interesting shout but seems like they are still hanunted by the injury curse.

For me the 3 teams who I feel are currently underrated overall (not necessarily sleepers):

Ravens
Giants
Broncos

Chargers
Ravens
Giants

Giants 9/1 to win the East

Chargers are not really sleepers, they're favourites to win their division and in most people's playoff predictions.

I agree with the Giants. Otherwise, Cardinals for me.

So no one has Tampa as sleepers? Last year they had bad injuries on defense and they might have a running game this year with Ronald Jones; I don't know about their defensive backs though.

First three games are the Saints in New Orleans, the Eagles and the Steelers without Winston, pretty good chance they start 0-3 Got one of the hardest schedules overall as well.

Big chance they would've started 0-3 with Winston as well tbf.

Jones has really struggled this preseason though. So it seems he won't hit the ground running. And their division is possibly the toughest to get through with Saints, Falcons and Panthers. Their draft seemed fine to me but they are still behind the other three teams . Winston starts in a three game ban also. *

*My experise spans over three seasons watching this sport so take everything I say with a pinch of salt.

That's why they are sleepers, there is always a surprising team in the NFL and it could easily be them. And Fitzpatrick is perfectly able to win games with a good a gameplan while Winston can easily lose you a game if under pressure.

That's the thing, last year Tampa lost a lot of tight games particularly within their division, they are not bad at all. And never judge a team on preseason, coaches test players and try new things, it doesn't really tell you much about the upcoming season, if you look at the Vikings preseason in 2017, it was bad.

Yeah I know but his preseason has been so bad they've made Payton Barber the starter. something that wasn't in the conversation before the preseason started.

I know there are always teams who are surprisingly good, just don't see them coming through that schedule and especially that start. Fitzpatrick isn't the worst backup in the league but he's still a big downgrade and he's more than capable of throwing games away as well.
