Day 4: Costa Rica vs Serbia, Germany vs Mexico , Brazil vs Switzerland

Wish we got South Korea in the opening match instead. Mexico is arguably the toughest opponent in the group and they always perform well in the World Cup, only missing out on goal difference to Brazil for the top spot in 2014. Not sure why Löw is not starting Reus, Germany badly need speed and there seems to be no speed in this team. Apparantely Ozil won't be starting as well. Hope it has nothing to do with the Erdogan scandal and I just hope this whole shitstorm would not ruin the atmosphere in the team. Here's hoping Ozil or Gundogan score a match winning goal to get back into the fans' good book. Come on Deutschland.

Where did you hear that? Since it will probably be either Reus or Özil sitting out.

Bild (who often had moles in DIE MANNSCHAFT) have reported that the first team during the final training match was Neuer - Kimmich, Boateng, Hummels, Hector - Khedira, Kroos - Müller, Özil, Draxler - Werner
exactly as one would expect with that silly guarantee for Draxler.

Is the term Die Mannschaft really a thing in Germany?

Already read it a couple of times here. It makes me cringe everytime a bit more. Nobody in Germany calls the national team "Die Mannschaft", i.e. "the team". Someone already explained it in another thread, it is just about the marketing, not a historically grown concept or something comparable. Just incredibly annoying. It should be automatically blocked like an insult on this forum.

Switzerland are an underrated team, they're very solid and they will cause Brazil some problems. Their results in the past 3 years have been very impressive. With that said, I still expect Brazil will pull through but we'll only start seeing their magic after this game.

Mexico aren't very solid defensively and I didn't like to watch them play in the Confederations Cup last year, they seemed badly coached so Germany should take that one.

Serbia 1-1 Costa Rica
Brazil 2-1 Switzerland
Germany 2-0 Mexico

Of course, everyone loves using it!!

Wow, you could probably cut glass with that sarcasm...:D

I never understood why they didn't go for something people actually used, "Nationalelf" or something like that. Bierhoff probably just went to Google Translate and ran "Squadra Azurra" (minus the blue, obviously) or "L'Equipe" through it... dumbass. :P

It's only a thing because we're super bad at marketing as we're so pragmatic and not so great at creating stars/shining brand names. So when the international media started using that term, the German federation must've not been able to believe their luck. Finally Germany has something like "Selecao" "3 Lions" or "Equipe Tricolore". They instantly jumped at the opportunity of using that term themselves and have done so ever since. It's really not a term that originated in Germany, it's just the German word for "the team". No one used it as a brand name till a few years ago.

Hmm that Serbia team actually looks pretty good, very solid midfield and a good attack. For some reason I thought Serbia didn't have very good players aside from Matic, but Tadic, Mitrovic, Llajic and Savic are high level players. Decent full backs to if a bit ageing.

I read it in some reports that Ozil could possibly be dropped for Draxler because of an injury he had during training. Nothing personal it seems. Seems like Ozil would play today. Hope he puts in a stellar performance and even better score a goal to redeem himself with the country and fans. What do you reckon of Germany's chance for this World Cup and for the match today? Every Germans I've spoken to seem so pessimistic.

They are like Italian fans.

Persimistic before the tournament but usually do well.

Oh i just noticed Milenkovic in it, please Lord dont make me watch Ivanovic as RB

That Costa Rica line-up:lol: 5 players are in their 30s and just one is below 28. Reminds me of Bayern

Serbia has one of the best midfields in the tournament. That backline though: Kolarov (32), Milenkovic (20), Tosic (33), Ivanovic (34), Stojkovic (34).

Switzerland are a nothing team in international tournaments. Fully expect Brazil to comfortably beat them.

Huh?

Anyway, good luck.
