Should we be seriously considering signing him this summer?Hes available for just 3 million quid....knows United inside out...he seems to have overcome his injury troubles,he's been a good consistent performer for West brom.Plus he's a very good distributor of the ball who knows how to bring the ball out from the back and at 30,he definitely has at least another 3-4 seasons left in him. So,should we bring him back or should we just look for an upgrade??

Now I'm no United expert, but I'd be surprised if you are to buy any CB this summer. Rojo just signed an extension, Smalling plays the majority of games, so at the worst he'll be a backup, and Bailly and Lindelof are Mourinho signings. So even without Jones, it's 4 CBs (and Tuanzebe, and Fosu-Mensah with a small chance).

Even if you eventually do buy someone, my bet is it won't be Johnny Evans...

I wouldn't even pay 3 quid to have him back. One of van Gaal's best moments selling him. Got found out as soon as Ferdinand and Vidic both left.

Why the absolute feck would we want to sign a defender from a team that's about to be relegated? How would that improve us?

Well I'd be all for selling Jones and Rojo and bring Evans for 3 million, but he doesn't seem like he got over his injury troubles at all, and that's the most important thing when I look at it.

Why is it so fecking scandalous to sign a player from a relegated club? Leicester signed Maguire and Liverpool signed Robertson from Hull last summer, it didn't do them so bad.

Evans could probably sign for any PL club, but think he'll probably go somewhere he'll start, so outside of the top 6.

I'd take him back as a squad player, but doubt he'd want to as he left to play week in week out

No point imo. He isn’t good enough to be an automatic starter, so we would just be adding to the relatively mediocre ranks that is already overflowing. The only reason to sign him is if we sel a few centre backs and bring him in as cover.

Excellent squad option for anyone in the top 6, really. Don’t think we really need him unless we replace him with one of the CB’s who just can’t stay fit - Rojo/Jones. But even then it’s just a signing for signings sake.

If I was Arsenal or Spurs I’d definitely take him.

If he was available for £30m, would you even have written this thread?

He’s not good enough no matter what his price. We can’t fill our squad with mediocre players just because they are cheap.

Nope. He's an average signing and we've made way too many of those in the last 5 years.

We need to be ruthless to be the best.

City can buy him now if they wanted him so bad  I have a feeling they definitely won't.

He's a good player but nowhere near the top level, he never was even when we had him.

Always liked and rated him, but don't think he will be back.

Saying that don't know who came with such a clause (him or his agent), but he is about to earn a damn good contract as there will be more than few clubs interested. All that at the age of 30 and just getting relegated.

He'd be a very good signing for Liverpool. They have one elite CB and one mediocre one, he'd improve them. We need that elite CB.

He's a good option for a team lacking homegrown players and depth at centre back. That is not United.

United already has 5 centre backs better than him.

I wouldn’t take him back even if they paid us. He was like bambi on ice his last season. McNair was better than him

No. He isn't better than what is already at the club.

Everton, Newcastle or West Ham.

If he's fit, that's a bargain for a home grown player with a 2-4 years left.
Not sure who partners him at the minute but Lascelles/Evans would be a very good pairing for a top table finish at Newcastle.

Why?? I've never understood the good distributor of the ball thing either. He just punts it forward, often missing his target or causing a 50-50 situation, resulting in us losing possession. It used to annoy me so much

I'm hearing that both Bebe and Obertan are available for a packet of ritz crackers, why not go for those two too while we're at it?

He's a half decent player. He'd do fine, but unless someone came in with an astronomical offer for one of our current lot, it wouldn't make sense. Some mad man comes in with 20 million for Rojo and we can replace him with a 3 million pound Evans? Sure, that makes sense. Any other scenario is pointless.

Now that the league is all but over, I’d like to see Lindelof start every remaining league game. We spent a lot on him and there is a reason we signed him, trouble is we’ve barely seen those reasons.

Smalling
Jones
Bailly
Lindelof
Rojo
Blind

With Tuanzebe and Fosu Mensah coming back. That's more than enough cover there.

The last thing we need is more mediocre players. If we're going to sign a centre back, it should be a top quality one.

He could be available for literally nothing and I still wouldn't want him. We need quality, not quantity.

Depending if Rojo, Jones stay on next season I could see us picking him up if he was happy to be fourth choice behind Smalling and a combination of Bailly and Lindelof that will play with Smalling next season. He could get 10 games as a backup rotational player and stand in for injury cover. Providing his wages are low then it wouldn't be a silly move.

We've got a lot of CB's though and some issues to sort out going forward.
