Saul Niguez | Extended contract with Atletico till 2026

Maybe, just maybe, he's not a cnut and wants to stay with his club since aged 13?

He's been playing in Madrid since around 10 years old.

How is that possible? Isn't a 6 year contract the maximum allowed one in football?

Regardless, it is a very stupid move by him. He likely doesn't like money.

That's not stupid, he said this week that money wasn't a priority. And it's not as if he wasn't earning millions.

Why stupid ? Cause he wants to commit to his club ? If he ever leaves, it pretty much guarantees a good fee for Atletico too.

He's playing the long game, waiting for Ander to be gone in 4-5 years time.

Even if he wants to stay there for his entire career, it is a stupid move. He is going to get stacked on this wage until 2026, and with the money in football, that isn't a wise thing to do. Why not sign a 5 year contract, and 3 years down the line, sign a new one on higher wages (when he would also be on his prime). This is basically his last big contract he is signing (if Atletico doesn't sell him) and he is just 22 which is ridiculous.

It is a five year contract with an option to renew, since you can't sign for more.

There's probably clauses that trigger a wage rise each year, there's no way someone would stay on the same wage for 9 years.

It's quite obvious he hasn't signed a one-off contract that ties him to the club for another 9 years. It's more likely than not riddled with clauses and trigger options.

2026? I don't remember a player ever getting such a long contract. Isn't 5 years the maximum number of years?

When a player gets a 6 years contract teams always do a 5+1 type of deal, so I'm assuming they did a 5+4 years contract. This is so weird

This lad doesn't mess about does he? I want more money, fair play to him for coming out and just simply admitting it unlike a lot of footballers.

If he keeps up performing and improving like he does, Atletico will increase his wages anyway, like any club does (without even prolonging the contract). No point in keeping your player unhappy

He's a good young player, but I prefer his brother Sup.
Old joke.

And why is this stupid on his behalf? Maybe he absolutely loves playing for the club. You could argue that it's a risk for the club in case he had a terrible injury or something but they may have included some clause to cover that.

And Koke signed until 2024. Good deals for Atletico!

In general, I wouldn't advise a 22 year old to commit to anything for nine years.

We all bitch and moan about players having no loyalty and just going where the biggest paycheque takes them. Then a player actually shows that he values his connection with his club over more mercenary instincts and everyone calls him stupid.

Maybe he's just taken into account that as a professional footballer at a big club he's earning more than enough to be rich for the rest of his life and give his kids a good start in life. He loves his club and he wants to stay there for the foreseeable future. Seems like a great decision to me.

And well done to Simeone on creating a team which players love being a part of enough that they commit like this.

Nine year deal - highly unusual. Should put an end to any transfer speculation after his fine performances in the U21 Euros.

Not many 22 year olds have options like this. Playing professional football for one of the best clubs in the world where he's been since he was a child and where he gets paid wages most can't even dream of isn't the same as leasing a shitty flat.

Good lad. Perhaps he just loves playing for his hometown club and is happy to stay put, just like Rashford and Lingard for United. Wish we have him though

As others have said, there's no chance in hell he will stay on the same wage for 9 years. Contracts can and are amended all the time.

That's the thing though, you don't know the exact stipulations of his contract so why speculate ? I doubt he's stupid enough not to have included some form of wage increase each seasons anyway. Morever if money isn't his main motivation like he said, why criticize him on that ? I'm not saying signing a long term contract is the best thing ever but it's not stupid from his POV by any stretch. His club can be criticized on the other hand.

He can still get all that without it being a nine year contract. This just gives his employers more leverage over him when the time comes to renegotiate or sell. It's a romantic gesture from the player, but make no mistake the club is a business and will treat him like an employee.

You can be loyal and not stupid. The only possible scenario where this contract favors him is if he has a career ending injury a few years in the contract. There are countless players who love(d) theor club, but they didn't sign a 9 year contract. Thing is, a very good midfielder (not a Modric/Kroos level, but below them) will get payed 300-500k/week in 3-5 years. But Saul will get stuck on whatever money he is (I doubt that he is on anything more than 100k/week). It is simply an obscure amount of money that he is losing by making this romantic gesture. And he could have had the best of both worlds, playing for the club he loves while earning as much as a player of his calibre does.

Unless of course, this is just PR and as someone said, he is on a 5+4 contract. Or there is a clause that increases his wage.

These are some very daunting assumptions. Apart from that, not everyone is driven by a money-making attitude. Truth is, 100k/week is already an absurd amount of money, and if you are a grounded person way more than you are ever able to spend.
Not everybody dreams of a private 747 and a 150m yacht.

This commitment to one club is a load of. Its because they are afraid they won't make it elsewhere which is fair enough. Don't buy the oh I don't care about trophies and doubling my wages because I love this club nonsense.
