Day 18: Germany vs. Algeria

A few team could have done with a fraction of the passion Algeria left on the pitch today. Respect.

Enough rooting for the underdogs.

I don't wanna see QF's with Costa Rica's and Algeria's thank you very much.
Wouldn't it be good to see someone else win a World Cup apart from Brazil, Germany, Italy, etc? As long as they don't do it by playing dour shit like Greece did when they won the Euro's, I don't see how anyone can complain. How's football meant to grow in areas that aren't completely developed if it's always the same countries in the latter end of the tournament.

You're also forgetting the reason why Costa Rica is in the QF is because they're unbeaten and have only dropped points in 1 game. They're outplaying the big dogs that you love so dear

ESPN news right now: Germany scores twice in extra time to beat Nigeria.

Lol.

Germany deserved to win but Algeria deserve a lot of praise too. If they had just been better with the final pass or the final cross they could have won it although it would have been unfair on the Germans.

I know he scored what turned out to be the winner but good God was Ozil terrible. I remember him playing well when Real Madrid beat Barcelona at the Nou Camp a couple of years ago but other than that I think I must be a bad luck charm for him because whenever I watch him play he is terrible.

Algeria... another one of these so-called "lesser" teams that would have beaten England at this tournament...

What did he say. "Don't write of the Germans"?.
No. Coming back at Chiles who said that France don't have anything to worry about. Algeria have more pace than France in their team and I saw very little in their game today that would worry me if I was German either.

Should be an Easy win for France in the 1/4 finals , you cant win a World Cup with Mertesacker Mustafi Boateng and Howedes , Why is Durm not playing anyway?
There are no easy wins over Germany in a WC. When was the last one? Also: did you see France against Nigeria? Algeria is a lot better than Nigeria. Yes, Germany wasn't convincing, but they will show up against France.

I want Germany to win this game actually ..I really do ! but I can't see them winning it , Griezmann Benzema and Valbuena will hurt Germany def a lot ..

Mertesacker acting like he was insulted when the interviewer asked him why the german defense and transition game weren't, quote, "that good".

The best team won, but what an extraordinary and heroic performance by Algerie. No dirty bullshit or diving, just pacey, technical football and passing and players running their socks off for their country. Great to watch.

About the added time. Lets not forget that this was 15 minutes of extra time. How much time do you wanna add on? 2 minutes for 15 minutes would be like 6 minutes after 45 minutes. It's not like Germany was time wasting either. Took quick throw ins etc...only Müller's block of that goalkick was a bit cnutish, but I didn't even know it wasn't allowed to be honest.

It's not about how much time is added on. It's about respecting the amount of time added. If a ref decides that two extra minutes are needed, he might as well make sure that those two whole minutes of football are played. The +2 at the end was at most one minute of football being played. Needless to say, one minute can change a whole game.

Holy hell, Merte is mad as feck. Can understand him. It is so ungrateful to play as CB in Löw´s system. He was really solid in this tournament all things considered.

The ever diminishing dominance of the football powerhouses.. Now the game of football is all down to tiny margins....

are you serious? how many times have we seen the best team lose?

Yes I am. In my opinion, the team that goes through is ultimately the better team because they found a way to win despite what all the stats would show. At the end of a tournament, the best teams are the ones winning it all. If, say, Costa Rica were able to do that (they won't), then it would be clear they were the best of the tournament because they would have had to beat a lot of good teams in the run up to the final. But that's my definition on what's best. And that's what makes a tournament like this so exciting. An underdog can have a chance. It doesn't always have to end up with the status quo of Spain/Italy/Brazil/France/Argentina/Germany/etc.

Yup. Technically most of them were outstanding, probably even better control/dribbling than their German counterparts. Their passing in between the lines was also something to behold at times, just couldn't find the right weight on their crosses most of the time unfortunately (except for the goal obv). Also that one through ball from the CB at the end
