Jimmy Savile and Operation Yewtree

"Can you tell what it is yet?"
"Yes, Rolf, it's your cock. It's always your cock."

Nookie Bear's next; his name's a byword for depravity.

More seriously: these arrests look* like nothing more than sops to the public.

*'Course, there may well be genuine criminality.

In this context, I wish 15 year old girls wouldn't be described as 'children' by the media though.

True enough, but it doesn't justify it. He should have known better, he was around 50 at the time even if he though she was 18, say (giving him the benefit of the doubt), it's pretty sordid for a man of his age.

There are some bars, some grey walls, a toilet and a big tattooed man. Can you guess what it is yet Rolf?

I rarely agree with you but I do here (got to love backhanded compliments). In most cases there is little difference between a girl aged 15 and the same girl aged 18. Females mature significantly younger than males do.

When a 15 year old girl is the accused, she will be referred to as a teenager. When the victim, they will be called a child.

Bollocks. Utter and complete bollocks. 15 year old girls may on average be more mature than boys but adults they aren't.

Why highlight the 15 year old complainant? There was a 14 year old too....is she fair game as well? If they're not children what are they?

Fair game apparently.

Teens are trying life out and that doesn't make them adults. Taking advantage of a child trying life out just isn't justified.

I guess if the law calls them children then the press just follows suit.

What would you call them?

Don't tell me we're going the route of those damn sexy kids being the real problem.

I won't tell you that.

Sometimes politically correct outrage on the Caf assumes bizarre dimensions. I make what I thought was an uncontroversial post, saying that a 15 year old girl shouldn't be reported in the media as a 'child', and a firestorm of protest ensues. Apparently half the Caf, including Wibble, rcoobc, Eboue and Marching, think a 15 year old is a child.

Agreed. But there's a chronological space between childhood and adulthood. Western society calls this space adolescence. A 15 year old is an adolescent, or a teenager. Neither adult nor child.

I simply suggested that the use of the word 'child' conjures up a misleading image in the minds of some (but apparently not all) viewers and readers.

I don't think anyone has ever used "political correctness" correctly whilst complaining about it.

It's just one of those things that never happens.

I'd agree with WA. Once a child enters puberty they are no longer a child. Adolescent is the most appropriate term. The media are not stupid and have their own agenda. Moreso than most they know the power of their words and choose them with intent.

I think I used it accurately in this instance, but let's not quarrel. I still have fond memories of your Moyes/Woodward masterpiece.
