After selling my old one, and being handed down some money from my dad, I'm looking to buy a new laptop in and around the 800 euro mark, I'd like to get as much bang for my buck and pack in as much gaming experience as I can, I need a laptop because it will have to do for college as well.

Setting the benchmark for the price range so far is the acer 5750

Can anybody recommend one that's better for the price? Or cheaper and just as good.

Thanks!

The one thing I've learnt about computers is that most people don't need the latest super-duper one.

Get yourself a model that's a couple of years old and save yourself 50%+. Try clearance stores (called outlet stores in England) and spend the savings on something else.

Incidentally, wrong forum.

ASUS N56VZ-ES71

Just stick a Seagate Momentus XT 750GB Hybrid (HDD+SDD) and it'll fly!

My son has that laptop and it is excellent never had any problems with it.

spunk a little bit extra and get a macbook air

its crap...piece for piece there are better laptops out there for far less.

you're making him spend a thousand quid and he wont be able to play a single game on it

In that one there aren't CPU performances so I don't know what to say.

About three months ago I bought an ASUS K53SM with core i7 2670QM processor, 8GB Ram DDR3 1333Mhz, GeForce 630M graphic card and 750GB Hard Disc for 660EUR which was a very good deal. Now I think that you can buy the same cheaper knowing that it has been released the new generation of processors. Until now it worked perfectly so I recommend that type of laptops.

Not be able to play a single game on it because it's a Mac, or because it's an Air?

I didn't read the gaming part

love mine, although yes is aint designed for games

I just 'downgraded' (not price wise necessarily) from an XPS 15 with Nvidia dedicated graphics to a new Dell XPS 13 ultrabook. It is a beautiful piece of kit, with the OS on SSD, high specs, lightweight, immensely built with a battery that'll last me 8 hours or so on normal usage. (4 on HD movie playback).

It doesn't have dedicated graphics, but you can play most games just fine:

As a side note, it has a backlit keyboard (once you have owned a laptop without one, it is hard to go back) and one of the best non Mac keyboards for comfort and typing that I've ever tried.

I did my homework on ultrabooks and for my needs, this is the best for me as it is small but robost (very small considering the 13.3" screen). Also, if you do watch the video, the fan issue has been rectified

I have a Dell XPS Studio. They've been discontinued since then because they are basically Alienware without the flashy stuff. It's on the more expensive side but it's built to handle games.

The XPS is it's little brother and it's built for comfort. It can handle most games well but it's not really built for gaming. However for the price range you're looking at it's about as good as it gets. I'd probably looking at that one if my laptop would suddenly decide to crazy on me.

The xps I had / have was a studio xps 15z, i7, with 1GB Nvidia GT 525 dedicated graphics. Great for gaming. Bulky bastard though and as it turned out, I wasn't really playing much Crysis 2, for example. Absolutely love the new one though.

It's quite heavy for laptops now a days though it doesn't look much bigger compared to other ones the same age with a 15" screen.
Mine's going to be 3 years old in a couple of months but is still a better performer than the Macbook Pro and comparable laptops. I don't regret buying it one bit as I've used it quite a bit for gaming. It's better than my desktop. Only thing it's missing is a better cooling system. The fan exhaust is poorly designed.

Man, what is it with all these "so, Tom Cleverley/Laptop/porn/Dark night/whatever then" thread titles?

How come you've had your name changed Cider?

My mate got a new laptop recently, great laptop, quite pricey though, think you'd be looking around £600+ quid. I could ask him about it for you tomorrow. He was using it for stuff you will be I imagine, FM, spotify etc.

Cheers, any help is appreciated, would love to be able to max FM out.

It is great for that and does outperform nearly anything. Just with the 9 cell battery, it's so heavy it's just a pain to lug around. I'm fairly sure it will just be my new 'desktop'. With the new one weighing in at less than 2 pounds (I think) it's also robust with a gorilla glass screen and carbon fiber back (which also helps with cooling) and an aluminum cover, it's also quite durable. Now with a small bag, on my travels I just chuck that in along with the ipad and I'm good to go. For gaming on the go I have a vita (which I won), so that's great for Fifa / Uncharted, etc.. Christ, I've a lot of gear.

You don't really need an i7 for gaming by the way, the i5 is more than good enough so save yourself some money though, in fact there's basically no difference. The i7 is only at its most useful when it comes to multitasking to the extreme

Save yourself a few hundred quid and go for this. More RAM and a better card

610M is not a good card, and it could have problems with the new games.I recommend a 630M/540M graphic card.

on that laptop direct website, looking around.

Aye I meant to post a 540M one from the same site. The 630M is a bit expensive.

They're about the same, I think that 630M is essentially 540M but a generation newer. Still the difference is pretty low, 630M about 5% better than 540M.

It lack nothing but for now I don't recommend buying the new generation of processors because still it's unproven how good they are, also there could be problem with heating etc. I remember that the first generation of processors core i(x) was pretty crap while the second one was awesome. So, about the third generation is still early to comment. Personally I would have downgrade that processor with 2670QM, and would have upgrade the HDD to 7200rpm. The price would be the same, but still pretty expensive (more than 900 EUR).

That looks like a very good laptop, a bit out of my price range though.

Jake, have a look at the Dell Uk Outlet's online store. They often have returns/scratch and dents that sell for miles below what they're worth. They don't deliver to Ireland but if you know someone in the UK you can get it delivered there, or there are services in Ireland that allow you to post it to their UK address and then they deliver it. Might still work out as cheap for a better model.

You're better off waiting til the Sandybridges (3rd generation) are out in full force, then the current generation will start dropping hugely in price.
