Your Movie Hits and Misses This Year Thus Far

Gran Torino has been probably the best film i've seen this year, wasn't really sure what to expect. So would class that as the biggest hit for me. Hangover too would be up there.

Terminator was a big miss, big let down I thought.

I've seen pretty much every film released at the cinema so far this year though and off the top of my head these are the main candidates.

I'll add to the list in a short while....

Right here's a list of what i've seen this year at the cinema - i'll say if its a hit, miss or just as expected.

Wolverine Hit
Terminator miss
State of Play ok
Benjamin Button miss
Damned United hit
My Bloody Valentine 3D ok
Fast & Furious ok
Knowing Hit
Ice Age Miss
Transformers ok
Looking For Eric Hit
Angels & Demons Hit
Notorious Hit
Year One ok
Hangover Hit
Gran Torino Hit
Public Enemies Hit
The Unborn ok
The Uninvited ok
Slumdog Millionaire Hit
12 Rounds ok
The Haunting In conneticut ok
Drag me To Hell Hit
Red Cliff Hit
Raging Bull Hit (watched at the cinema)
Last House on Left miss

Only thing i've seen lately is the Hangover and it was a definite HIT.

Bloody hell Jgray. The only film I have seen this year was released in 1977

Hangover is definitely brilliant, one of the best comedies I've seen in quite a while.

Theatre movies I've seen this year.

Wolverine: was alright
Star Trek: pretty good
Terminator: it was good except for the director fecking up a bit (mcg, you're having a laugh you dumb ****)
Angels and Demons: really good
Transformers 2: pretty good
Public Enemies: Why? oh why did Michael Mann direct this? Worst movie of the year hands down. I love Johnny Depp and Bale. Their acting was pretty good in it but the director ruined this movie BIG time. Michael Mann should not be in hollywood.

And completely and utterly factually incorrect from the beginning to the very end..... why do they have to feel its necessary to alter every detail when the truth is actually more interesting...... its official Holywood is incapable of making a decent movie now

Every film I've seen this year has been pretty enjoyable, not seen all that many though

Star Trek
Hangover
Damned United
Terminator Salvation
Gran Torino

I did not know this. That makes it worse now. Someone should start a "ban michael mann from making movies" website.

Michael Mann is a brilliant director. Just couldn't believe he was behind Public Enemies though. Hopefully he puts that guff behind him and gets back into form.

Michael Mann is overrated if anything, LOTM, Heat, and The Insider were great but he really hasnt done anything special since then

Mann's pissed around with Miami Vice and now Public Enemies but he doesn't have anything to prove to anyone. Think he just wants to perfect digital format and nail the visuals (Which he pretty much did in Collateral, although it really doesn't work in Public Enemies).

You'd think he would still want to win an Oscar for the Best Director or Best Picture, but I guess he just isnt that ambitious

Or he's just a sensible director who couldn't give a feck about the Oscars

Yeah, the great ones are the ones who don't give a feck about the Oscars and still when them, this guy aint one of them.

There are plenty of great directors who never won Oscars. Danny Boyle won an Oscar ffs, you're saying he's a better director than Michael Mann?

Heat was excellent, a really great movie. I just don't think he has it in him anymore. Miami Vice was an absolute joke. I don't know anyone that liked the movie. Public Enemies wasn't as bad as miami vice but was horribly DIRECTED. Certain scene selections were just wrong. It seemed at times that he was just changing the direction of the movie as it went on. At one point, it's gonna be an all out action gangster flick and then midway he'll change it to a romantic drama, then change it back. This is combined with the movie having absolutely NO character development. What was the point of having hoover in the film? Yes it's historical, but most of the movie isn't even factual anyways (after Dresilved's post I read up on dillinger and movie is not close to what happens in real life). No character development on Purvis (bale) at all. That girl billie had a very little character development also. There are many things he could have done to fix this but he didn't. He did a lazy job and I think he just figured people will come to see his movie based on his reputation. As I said above, worse movie of the year I've seen so far and it's really unfortunate because this was the movie that I most wanted to see and the most I was hyped up for.

No I'm just saying that Michael Mann isnt the best thing since sliced bread like you are insinuating

It's been a shit movie year so far.

I thought Gran Torino was massively overrated and The Hangover was not as funny as i've expected.

I never watch movies like Transformers and X-Men because I know they're gonna be fecking awful.

So far I have enjoyed Star Trek, State Of Play, Gran Torino and The Hangover.
I avoided the Wolverine and Terminator movies but I'll probably check out the Dillinger film.

I am gutted that I didn't get to see Looking For Eric
