As some of you know I'm a pretty obsessive Fleet Foxes fan and have been swept away in the sea of 'Helplessness Blues' and it's pure awesomeness since its release in May (or a little before because surprise, surprise, it leaked on the interweb). After listening to this gorgeous piece of work at a ridiculous level of frequency, which still hasn't lessened, I remembered that I discovered this band through this forum (thank you whoever that was). And remembered how close minded I was to the possibility of less commercial music actually being better than the commercial stuff. I believed commercial music today was rubbish but also had the misconception that if music was good enough it would automatically hit the headlines of popular consciousness, which obviously isn't the case.

And so, this past week or so I've been spending a lot of time looking at new stuff that might have passed me by this year. I've gone through a few 'best of 2011' lists to give me indicators and thought to ask you lot for the same.

My favorite, unsurprisingly, is Helplessness Blues. This album has struck such a cord with me that I never knew was possible from music (except for their first album possibly). The songwriting is extremely introspective which appeals to me a great deal and their music is delivered with as much intricate detail as honesty and simplicity.

Bon Iver was another one I listened to quite a lot this year. Definitely like Justin Vernon's way of putting songs together which involves a lot of rich sounds and artistic elements, but as I've said before half this album is excellent and the other half is a disappointment. Still the good parts are really good.

The King is Dead by The Decemberists is probably my second favorite album of the year (out of the small lot I've listened to). It's definitely not as delicate and rich in it's sound as the above two but for me the consistency of the album is better than Bon Iver's. They've stuck to a simple formula but delivered it excellently using quality melodies which don't tire. It might not be something I'd hold on to for years but a good, solid and enjoyable listen.

House of Baloons by The Weeknd. I don't really like this genre (R & B if you can call it that), but I actually found this to be mildly enjoyable which is more than what I can say about most music of this nature.

Kiss Each Other Clean by Iron & Wine. Had heard lots about this band prior to downloading this album. Utter nonsense.

Apart from that, Tamer Animals by Other lives has impressed me but I'm only just getting into it so it will take me longer to form an opinion.

Let England Shake by PJ Harvey seems to have created a lot of buzz this year but I can't find myself quite getting into it.

And on first glimse, I'm liking The Harrow & The Harvest by Gillian Welch but the less said right now the better.

Right, so that's my take on music this year. I hope I haven't bored the living daylights out of you. I'd appreciate you guys to give your opinion as I think it's a great way to discover new material that demands more attention. Also, I'd suggest providing a list (I only didn't because I haven't heard enough albums in their entirety to form one). And finally, if you name an artist, do write a line or so about the kind of music it is so it's easier for others to know which album from your list they'd want to further look into.

Forgot to mention Smoke Ring for my Halo by Kurt Vile which was one of the albums which while isn't particularly outstanding or anything, I quite liked this year. A nice laid back listen with great excellent guitar work. His voice isn't quite brilliant in the usual sense (or in any sense for that matter) but it works with his kind of music.

Arctic Monkeys - Suck It And See (Alternative rock/Garage rock/psychedelic)
Yuck - Yuck - (Post-Punk revival, pop punk, Indie, Garage rock)
The Strokes - Angles (Rock, Garage rock, Indie)
Alex Turner - Submarine EP (Acoustic)
Miles Kane - Colour Of The Trap (Rock)

Arctic Monkeys - Suck It And See
Yuck - Yuck
Alex Turner - Submarine EP
Miles Kane - S/T

Could you just add in brackets the genre/style of music those albums belong to? For example, I've been through lists only to realize that a lot of the music was electronic which I can't deal with and wasted time researching about. Would be helpful.

Added. Bar Yuck most of these bands are easily identifiable as rock.

Its pointless though, isnt it.

Why? The thread doesn't have a deadline or a limit on how many albums can be named. People can continue to update it throughout the remaining 7 weeks or so.

The year is not over yet, for gods sake.

Exactly. And were not really handing out prizes. Besides, the point rather a 'winner' is to learn discover new stuff. Like this band called other lives I was completely unaware of. Maybe its ignorance but this I feel is an easy way educate one another. In fact as I've said I would have never known of artists such as fleet foxes and bon iver if I someone on the cafe hadn't pointed me in that direction.

I don't think it's been a great year for albums so far. The Panda Bear was a big disappointment for me.

I'd probably list:

Tom Waits - Bad As Me
Fleet Foxes - Helplessness Blues
Veronica Falls - Veronica Falls
Girls - Father, Son, Holy Ghost
Cults - Cults
PJ Harvey - Let England Shake

Cheers cinc. I do see your point. Will definitely be going through some of those although little bit on genre would help greatly.

I see, I interpreted it as being plural i.e. favourite albums rather than one conclusive answer. So you could list your favourite albums so far, as you have done above, and then add more on if there are some good releases to come. I don't think it's a pointless exercise.

yeah, but favourite means more than just good. For me

Mayer Hawthorne - How You Do
Kendrick Lamar - Section.80
The Horrors - Skying
Radiohead - The King of Limbs
Jamie Woon - Mirrorwriting
Arctic Monkeys - Suck It And See
Onra - Chinoiseries Pt.2
M83 - Hurry Up, We're Dreaming
Tyler, The Creator - Goblin

Elbow - Build a Rocket Boys!

Lippy Kids was easily one of my favourite songs from this year.

The genre, according to Wikipedia anyway, is alternative rock, indie rock.

Metronomy - The English Riviera
Laura Marling - A Creature I Don't Know
Bombay Bicycle Club - A Different Kind of Fix

The Horrible Crowes - Elsie
Nomy- By The Edge Of God
Edguy - The Age of the Joker
Buckethead - Look up There
Magnum - The Visitation
Sixx:A.M. - This Is Gonna Hurt
Turisas - Stand Up And Fight
Foo Fighters - Wasting Light
Dream Theater - A Dramatic Turn of Events
Die Apokalyptischen Reiter - Moral & Wahnsinn

It was released in late 2010 but I've been listening to My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy by Kanye West pretty much all year round, it's easily his best to date. A lot of people think he's a bit of a dick (probably an understatement) and I can understand why but for the most part I can't fault his music, for some reason his lyrics speak to me and draw me in and his production is more often than not top quality, he's got to be one of the best producers currently in the rap/hiphop industry.

Yeah, but some people will have some 'favourite albums' of 2011. Hence the point of the exercise. Just found your reaction slightly unusual as it seemed a pretty straightforward thread.

Agent Red, I see your posts but I don't see your picks!

Well it's tricky for me as I don't listen to the radio (ipod speakers at home, ipod on the bus, itrip in the car). Also don't follow the charts or any music shows regularly, so if I do happen to see someone perform on a show or on the radio it is normally by chance.

I think it may actually have been at the end of 2010 and only gained publicity this year, but 'Happiness' by Hurts was a really good album I thought.

Also really liked 'Sing It Loud' by KD Lang and her band. Not an album, but Damien Rice released a couple of singles in a bunch that were really good, called 'Everything You're Not Supposed To Be' and 'Uncomfortable'.

In terms of soundtracks, Alexandre Desplat's score to the last Harry Potter was outstanding, up there with Gladiator and other great classical scores for me.

Nothing's really blown me away this year.

I liked PJ Harvey's album. The Hunter by Mastodon had its moments but never grabbed me. Did that Warpaint album come out this year? I quite liked that.

Blut aus Nord - 777 - The Desanctification

This release has only been out a week or so but it has completely blown me away. It's been the album of choice on my IPod pretty much non-stop. The second part of a trilogy that's part Black Metal, part Industrial and just amazing. One of the most innovative Metal bands ever.

PJ Harvey - Let England Shake

Very strong release, as good as she's been since Stories.... As ever there's the odd filler but also some truly moving songs.

Blut aus Nord - 777 Sects(s)

Heavier than part two of what is turning into an epic trilogy.

Atlas Sound - Parallax

Only recently got this and haven't listened to it too much but Bradford Cox is such a fecking great songwriter that you can't go wrong.

Radiohead - The King of Limbs

Disappointing compared to In Rainbows but what wouldn't be. Still a 4 star album.

or Matana Roberts' album.

Elbow - Build a Rocket Boys!

Lippy Kids was easily one of my favourite songs from this year.

Just heard this. Very nice. Will go through more music from here and report back to this thread!

Mastodon - The Hunter

Machine Head - Unto the Locust

Fleet Foxes - Helplessness Blues.

Haven't heard to much new stuff. Been rather digging into old stuff I hadn't really heard much before.

What is it?

Cunninlynguists 'Oneirology'

I also liked Fleet Foxes album of course. And Kendrick Lemar, and J. Coles and the first part of M83 and TV on the Radio.

Radioheads was alright, but still my biggest letdown and havent listened to Mastodon, but thatll probably be great by default of it being Mastodon.

I was actually a bit disappointed by Helplessness Blues. I never got properly into it, but that doesn't mean it won't at some point. Boxer by The National seemed completely bland to me at first, then around six months later I just randomly listened to it (after reading a line from one of the songs at some website) and it's now comfortably in my top 5 albums of all time.

As for my personal favourites from this year, I don't see anything topping Bon Iver - Bon Iver, Bon Iver by the turn of the year, but James Vincent McMorrow - Early In The Morning (Brit/Irish Folk) is very, very close, and a must listen for everyone!

Other good releases from this year that have caught my attention and haven't already been mentioned (I think), in no particular order:

Manchester Orchestra - Simple Math (Indie / Alt Rock) -- Andy Hull is one of my favourite songwriters, and he didn't disappoint me with Simple Math, even though I was hoping they would take it more towards the rock sound they explored on Mean Everything To Nothing. Some very strong pop-rock songs on this album though!

James Blake - James Blake (Dubstep / Post-dubstep) -- My first encounter with the dubstep genre that I liked. Lindisfarne I & II in combination is one (or two) of my favourite tracks this year!

Lykke Li - Wounded Rhymes (Indie / Alt / Pop) -- I wasn't a big fan of her first album, but this one's really strong. Love the melodies and layered sound that characterizes the album.

Jamie Woon - Mirrorwriting (Post-dubstep and R&B in a very poppy combination) -- The most friendly (post)dubstep artist I've heard, and it's really just pop to my ears. The sound of vorspiel (pre-party) 2011 for me, as everyone was happy when I put him on. First half of the album is really strong, second half lacks a little in my book.

The Head and the Heart - The Head and the Heart (Folk / Indie) -- One of the best folk releases from America this year as far as I'm concerned. Much of the lyrics are tied to growing up and moving on, and I found it very easy to relate.

Haley Bonar - Golder (Alt Country / Folk) -- "Honest" is the only really fitting word I can find to describe this album. One of my favourites this year. Silver Zephyrs sounds like something played at a High School dance 30 years ago, and I absolute love it!

The Milk Carton Kids - Prologue (Pop / Folk) -- Two guys + two guitars = An album that is easily in my top five for the year. This paragraph perfectly describes their sound: "I listen and, try as I might, forget to hear them as distinct collaborators in song and story. Instead, they move to become a single, shadowy persona within the frame of Prologue –like young twins cast to tag-team one demanding role"

Herman Düne - Strange Moosic (Indiepop / Folk) -- Delightfully catchy, with a perfect dose of lyrical cheekyness to match.

Megan Henwood - Making Waves (Singer / Songwriter / Pop) -- She made a song, What Elliott Said, about Elliott Smith's music. Enough to catch my attention, really. Well worth a listen!

Guillemots - Walk The River (Indie / Alt Rock) -- The Birmingham group has made one of my favourite albums from England this year. I had a full week where I listened to this album more or less exclusively. Very, very good!

Jonathan Jeremiah - A Solitary Man (Folk rock) -- Very impressive debut album from the Londoner.

WU LYF - Go Tell Fire To The Mountain (Indie) -- The Manchester Band's album is the sound of indie 2011 for me. Strong all the way from start to finish, with L Y F, We Bros and Dirt being my favourites.

I can't recommend this album enough.

This thread is about three years premature, so I only have a few records so far:

Robedoor - Too Down to Die (some sort of rock)
Chubby Wolf - Turkey Decoy (ambient)
Heavy Times - Jacker* (garage rock)
Celer - Ever, Irreplaceable Beauty (ambient)
KWJAZ - S/T (muddy lounge music) technically out on cassette last year, but cassettes don't count

* pending proper listening (my turntable is mentally unstable and I haven't found mp3s yet, but it sounds horribly catchy when I have sound from more than one channel)
