My initial topic got deleted right after I posted it so this is the second time I'm posting this..!!
Firstly, I think it's been a great season even if it looks like that we'll end up with no trophies this year
We played some champagne football during much of the season and showed what a class team we are. I think the whole meaning of winning trophies is playing attractive football, and just being able watch United do that has been a pleasure. Who could have thought that we would still be in contention for the league this time around, when we were 11 points behind Liverfools(potentially 14 since they had a game in hand ) back in December, and that's just one example of the true spirit of this team, to be able to come back from that kind of situation.
And of course, who could forget the classic games this season, noticeably the 5-3 win at WHL, 4-3 at Elland Road to shut the Scums up, and the 2-0 win at Deportivo.
I know I'm in no position to question Fergie's tactics, but I've been disappointed with some of his tactical decisions throughout the season. I initially supported his 4-4-1-1 of playing Scholes behind Ruud 'cos Scholes is such a class player, but it came obvious that Scholes couldn't adapt to that position. Playing Giggsy behind worked brilliantly at times, but I think Giggsy is more natural on the wing with the free role rather than being in the middle.
I really feel sorry for Ole. He has done EVERYTHING to claim his starting place this year, and I was really gutted that he didn't start against Bayer in the second leg. He and Ruud have formed the best strike partnership in Europe just like Raoul has said, and I don't know why Fergie keeps leaving him out in these important games, when 4-4-2 is UNDOUBTFULLY our best formation. I really hope we stick to 4-4-2 with Ole and Ruud up front in Europe as well, given there aren't any exceptional situations or injuries.
Barthez: Recovered well from his early-season slump but I still feel that he lacks the command and presence you need as a goal-keeper. I still don't feel that assurance with him though...
Gazza: Has had a great season, even though he had a shaky start. Has yet again proven that CB is his best position, but I think he got back to his best in playing right-back recently 'til he got injured. Legend..!!
Blanc: Brilliant. Answered the challenge of replacing Jaap and given us his game-reading and experience. Too bad we didn't sign him earlier.
Ronny: Injury-prone but when fit, always reliable.
Silvestre: What an improvement in his game.!!
I think many would agree it's down to Larry's presence.
Becks: I think he has shown tremendous maturity and character to come back from his slump and time on the sideline. Fergie's masterplan striked again, and Becks showed what a world-class player he is.
Keano: What can you say?!?! The heart and soul of this team and a true living legend.
Scholes: I think Scholesy has had a disappointing season compared to his high standards. Didn't help that he had to play in unfamiliar roles of supporting Ruud and as a wide player due to injuries, but still showed his brilliance.
Giggsy: Sheer class isn't he?!?! Although hit by nagging injuries he is the BEST WINGER in the world. Was disappointing against Bayer but just like Roy suggested( I think) he was our best player in Europe this season.
Seba: I think ppl target him 'cos of his massive transfer fee and high profile, but I don't think he is unsettled, but I think his inconsistency is his problem. Didn't help that he has been carrying his injury.
Butty: His best season ever.!!
Has shown maturity and great development.
Ruud: A legend-in-making. It's just a dream come true to see him in the Red shirt, and to see him playing football again. I think he has been tired in the last couple weeks and shown fatigue, but still, what a debut season.
Ole: Our saviour. Feel sorry for him that he has now been left on the bench for the crunch games in Europe for 2 consecutive seasons-against Bayer in the return leg and against Bayern last season in Munich. Should be a starter no matter what.
Phizza,Wes,Irwin and O'shea have played significant roles, and I was really impressed with O'shea 'til he got injured. And even though Diego hasn't scored for us yet, I think many would agree that his workrate and movement have been very impressive. Can't wait 'til his full season next season.
Overall, I think all the United fans as a whole should stick together and thank the lads for another fantastic season. I mean, who else besides United can give you the joy, heartache and agony like they do?!?!
