Do you think Fergie's preference for this at the moment has anything to do with the strikers available to him? and the midfileders come to that?

You've got 3 CM's who all deserve a place in the side in Keane, Scholes and Butt...and of course Veron, who your boss is desperate to see succeed...4-4-2 means that someone misses out, 2 if Keane fit

In comparison you've got 3 out and out strikers, one being Forlan..who has obviously so far failed to give the manager any headaches on the seection front! RVN who is in if fit, and OGS who always seems to do the job, but often finds himself out of the team on a regular basis...and always has done...

Fair enough the 4-4-1-1 is an attempt at something different in Europe, particularly away from home, but it appears that the majority on here would prefer 2 up front in the league..

We had 5 forwards (not including Giggs and scholes) early last season and we still used it.
Its neccesary as we were hitting a brick wall in Europe, remember Real putting 2 men on our wingers.

We also had issues at the back last year though, which made it necessary to have an extra player who could help out. We have more than enough skill at the back this year with Rio and John, and Gary back, to play more attacking football imo.

I think it's necessary to be able to adapt to any formation - no-one would suggest that we should always play the same way, whatever the formation.

But 4-5-1 works better against European teams than it does in the EPL.

your right, 4. I presume we would be playing 4411 a lot even if we did have 4 strikers. Winning titles in 00 & 01 were anticlimaxes. We had to change things to make progress in Europe. If its not broken dont fix it you might say but it wasnt working imo, as i said we hit a brick wall in Europe 2 seasons in a row.
