...attack on the sport we love. Here is a clip from a website about some sports writer in Minnesota denouncing soccer. Just love these idiots...and to think they say baseball or basketball players are "real athletes."

<a href="http://www.soccertimes.com/oped/2001/dec20.htm" target="_blank">Media Idiot</a>

what do you expect from people that refer to football as "soccer" and think the world of professional sports consists of am football, baseball, basketball and hockey ...

god, the writer is thick as feck ...

There it is. We get big-time soccer and this is the behavior you can expect. <hr></blockquote>

well, he probably cheers on football players who weekley get busted for having half colombia in their car etc.

To be honest - I'm not at all surprised by this sort of view from an American - and I care so little about his opinion that I can't even be bothered to complain about it. I'm sure football will survive with or without the approval of the US.

I think that the concept of Baseball is an extension of the average American psyche - i.e. it's America versus the rest of the world - and America is right ;) We unfortunate people who are not privvy to the American way of life are sure not to understand their concern that the symbol of American independence and world superiority(Baseball) is being challenged by a "minor" sport such as Football.

---On Nov. 28, Claudio Rubino Jerez was sentenced to two years in prison in Stockholm, Sweden after attacking referee Ariel Scaparro in a game two months earlier. Following an ejection for a severe foul, Rubino Jerez twice attacked Scaparro, breaking the referee's collarbone and right foot.---

This writer's a fecking idiot; there are dozens of US athletes doing worse than this, Rae Carruth etc. Football players are better role models, play a more difficult sport and are paid less.

one yank honestly last week told me that the american world of sport is the world of sport ...

They're nuts... One guy even continued to argue that Baseball was bigger in South America than Football...

This from a nation that has a "World Series" with just Americans involved..

Yep, a sports called 'football' where banging each other and throwing a ball with a hand (now thats easy!) is the main target, or something where you hit a ball with a wooden stick, is so much better!

There's only one true football game and it actually involves plenty of FEET! <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" />

Hey no need to rip on American football or baseball. "Soccer" is great, but so is US football, basketball, baseball and hockey.

As far as the term, it was derived from the ball... which is a foot long... nothing to do with hands or feet.

American Football - not a patch on Rugby - the lads who play American Football have to wear fridges and are a complete bunch of tarts - no where near as skilful as Rugby players who actually are hard - remember the astonishment when Wigan and St. Helens played exhibition matces there with no helmets or padding in sight?

Basketball (Also known as 'netball') is for girls.

Basball (Also known as 'rounders') is also for girls

Hockey (also known as 'Hockey') is also for girls..

Can you see a theme here? Top American sports are played mainly by women from around the world..

Nuff said.

Great? naa, not really. Too many commercial breaks <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" /> <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" />

You may think our football is commercialized, but until you've watched american sports you don't know what that word means.

Dude you just sound like the Minneapolis journalist. Same bitterness, same brain power, diametrically opposing opinions. I'm trying to think who's dumber. I'll give you a tie for now. ;)

andy, i just like to know how much you know abt all these sports? have you ever played them, think abt the techniques and things like that?? if you haven't please don't go around saying all sports are for girls except for your beloved football... all sports are unique and great in their own way, please do show some respect to those who love and enjoy these sports.
i for one is a great fan of basketball, it is definitely not a game for girls and it is tougher than you can ever imagine.... have a great new year!

I agree with the rest of your post, but I assume you are mixing Ice Hockey with that other type of hockey where they run on a pitch the size of a football field and that is mainly played by girls.

Ice Hockey is one of the toughest sports in the world. They fight, they hit eachother with sticks and they tackle.

Fighting and hitting each other with sticks aren't in any Ice Hockey rules I ever saw. They're just thugs on skates. For a real game watch Aussie Rules ;)

yeah with all that padding they can fight and kick all they want, thats what makes it a pussy game,

looki at the irish game "hurling", there's no padding, possibly a helmet or shinguards but rare.

Now thats a tough game, same goes for Rugby

Protective gear is generally implemented to protect the players against serious injury. The NFL is probably the most violent sport I can think of in terms of the power, speed, and violence of impact. Several players have been paralyzed despite all of the protective gear that is in use. The use of padding and helmets is a prudent action imo.

So boxing is a girly sport then, since the gloves most certainly taper the effect of a bareknuckle punch?

well they dont wear helmets and padding in boxing so that makes it tough,

in hurling only a few players wear helmets, shin guards or gum shield, id say its as low as 10% of players. Yet they'e tearing around at high speed beating the shit out of each other with Ash sticks,

The weird thing is that injuries in GAA are relatively rare, dont ask me to explain that one.

people actually die playing rugby, as well as paralysed-at all levels, from schoolboy right to international. not that i think that's a reason to like the sport. i never liked rugby till a couple of years ago. now when i watch it i cant help but admire their courage as well as skill.

what i dont like about american football is that its so bloody tactical, in the sense that every last detail of a play is planned to the nth degree-leaves little room for spontineity (sp?) and moments of pure skill. in fact aprt from quaterbacks, rushingbacks and wide recievers i cant think of many positions in american football that require much skill-just a big bloke who is also quick on his feet.

How do you reckon Jonah Lomu 'd do in American 'football'? I reckon he'd murder it! with the ability to 'tackle' the guys that tackle you (blockers) which you can't do in rugby, they'd be slaughtered! There are big men in both sports. When you can only tackle the guy with the ball they'd run round like headless chickens, probably tackling each other.

No comparison with rugby. Rugby is a more directed, simpler, faster moving and subsequently more exciting, game.
