Luis Figo (Real Madrid), Francesco Totti (AS Roma), Patrick Viera (Arsenal), Rivaldo (Barcelona)

Michael Owen (Liverpool), Raul (Real Madrid)

neither should nesta, lucio, owen

thuram? yep .. totti? cant really argue with that

It's interesting to see how players make these lists based mainly their reputations, rather than their form.

yep .. owen shouldnt be in there if sheva isnt, either

this season for fulham, yep .. but not for juventus

an argument could be made for michael ballack

are we talking about the calendar year or the first part of this season?

The selections are not based on current form. Rather they are based on the performance for the entirety of the year of 2001.

Certainly Owen desrves inclusion. I do recall that 5 pieces of silverware were won by the Merseysiders last year. Could that have been done without the young shoulders of Owen.

And what of Totti. A fabulous performance in Euro 2000 as a prelude to AS Roma winning their first Scudetto in years.

For those of you who base selections on current form, that's absolutely ridiculous. Why would you pick someone who is hot at the moment but sucked the previous 11 months.

three of those supposed pieces of silverware were in meaningless competitions. The "Not good enough for the CL cup" is also questionable, leaving only the FA Cup - one third of the real treble.

for fuchs sake, some scousers have accepted that them 5 trophys are worth shite,
the F.A. cup i might take if we won nothing else but it still pales in comparison compared to the other two,
as for the UEFA cup, who gives a fuch? WHo do you think will win it this yr? I for one would be hard pressed to say what teams are left in it.

Five pieces of silverware my arse <img src="graemlins/keano.gif" border="0" alt="[Keano]" />

Barthez
Zanetti Hypia Lizarazu
Effenberg Keano Totti Vieira Rivaldo
Owen Henry

For the entire 2001

I had 5 pieces of silverware around my Christmas dinner plate....
2 Forks
2 Spoons
1 Knife

--------------------Kahn---------------------

Contra-------Nesta--------Lucio------Lizerazu

Figo--------Zidane-------Rivaldo--------Giggs

----------Shevchenko------Elber--------------

If it's a team of the year 2001 award of course Owen has justification to be in it after all his done for club and country (well i think so anyway, as well as those who voted in the 2001 European Footballer of the year award)

True he deserves recognition. For me Shevchenko is the best in the business these days, and Elber had a pretty good year with Bayern, winning the league and CL.

............Kahn

Thuram Hyppia Nesta Lizarazu

Figo........Totti......Rivaldo

..Shevchenko.....Raul

............Henry

I wouldn't expect to be shut out too often with this XI.

why nesta? hes been piss poor so far this season
why lucio? hes entertaining, surely, but as a true defender therere a couple of guys that deserve it more

Samual (rock solid to help Roma won Seria A)
Hyppia
Lizarazu
Figo (excellent and consisten throughout the year)
Totti (as Fergie said, a true world performer)
Vieira (best dm in the world today)
Keane (absolute brilliant for club and country)
Owen (his club and country just can't live without him)
Schevchenko (agruably the best striker in the world now)

Dude, who's going to cover for you? Figo, Totti, or Rivaldo can't defend shit. And Henry in front of Raul and Sheva? Pull Henry back so that he uses his speed, and move Raul and Sheva forward.
Plus Rivaldo and Totti are forwards. You have 5 striker/forwards, 1 midfielder and 4 defenders. Too unbalanced imo.

What the feck is Andersson doing there?

He has been shite for Barcelona, had a couple of good games for Bayern in the end of last season. Before that he was on the bench.

If you take the premier league alone you can find 3 better players: Hyypia, Ferdinand and Desailly.

He's had an incredible year. In May, he scored the goal that gave Bayern Bundesliga title in the dying seconds of their last league match at Hamburger SV. He played extremly well in the CL where his team shut out United and Madrid, among others. He's playing very well at Barca. He's been top-class for Sweden, immensely helping on the WC qualifiers. And he was voted Swedish footballer of the year. He deserves it more than Ferdinand, Desailly or Hyppia imo.

I would consider Nesta, Ayala, Kuffour, Hyppia and Tudor, but Anderson has had a better year then them all.

I think it's funny that the Man Utd fans exclude Owen from their World XI list and do not consider him to be that great because he plays for Liverpool. Yet when he dons the English national team jersey, they think he's unstoppable. :p

You bitter twat.

Lots of mancs have not included David Beckham either, even though he is unstoppable in that England jersey ;) Did it ever occur to you that Crespo, Batistuta, Vieri, Shevchenko, Raul, Henry... are simply better strikers than MO?
