You need to make a starting XI with a maximum of 1 player from Fergie's title winning teams. It can only be that iteration of the player from the year they won the title.

My attempt:

4-4-2

Schmeichel 96/97

Gary Neville 95/96
Jaap Stam 98/99
Nemanja Vidic 08/09
Denis Irwin 92/93

Luis Nani 10/11
Roy Keane 99/00
Paul Scholes 06/07
Ronaldo 07/08

Eric Cantona 93/94
Robin Van Persie 12/13

Missing a winner from 00/01 & 02/03. I'd say some of them are dead certs for example Ronaldo 07/08. Giggs 02/03 over Nani? Interested to see how you guys get along. Would you swap Keane & Stam's best years around?

Cantona 93/94 - van Nistelrooy 02/03
Cristiano 07/08 - Keane 99/00 - Scholes 06/07 - Beckham 98/99
Irwin 92/93 - Vidić 10/11 - Ferdinand 08/09 - Rafael 12/13
Schmeichel 95/96
Wanted to make something a bit different. Cantona drops deeper into midfield, Cristiano pushes forward. Schmeichel needs to be the one from 1995/96.

Premier League Players of the season in this team: Schmeichel, Vidić, Cristiano & van Nistelrooy. Eric would've been one as well if they were to give the award in 1993/94.
Matt Busby Players of the year in this team: Cantona, Keane, van Nistelrooy, Cristiano.

Schmeichel 95/96
Irwin 93/94
Stam 00/01
Ferdinand 02/03
Evra 09/10
Beckham 98/99
Keane 96/97
Scholes 99/00
Ronaldo 06/07
Cantona 92/93
Rooney 08/09

Cantona 93/94 - van Nistelrooy 02/03
Cristiano 07/08 - Keane 99/00 - Scholes 06/07 - Beckham 98/99
Irwin 92/93 - Vidić 10/11 - Ferdinand 08/09 - Rafael 12/13
Schmeichel 95/96
Nailed that.

Van Der Sar 09

Neville 99
Rio 08
Vidic 08
Evra 08

Keane 2000
Scholes 07
Cantona 94

Ronaldo 08
Ruud 03
Rooney 10

Way too unbalanced to actually work, I think Beckham was a massive part of why that midfield 2 was able to work, but Ronaldo gets in ahead of him on paper. Rooney shunted out wide because how could I leave Ruud out?

No Stam because I was too young*, all I know is the trio of Rio, Vidic and Edwin were so solid that they actually broke records. 13 games was it without conceding? In a fecking row - that’s nuts.

*I realise I’ve got Cantona, all I’ve seen are highlights though.

Cantona 93/94 - van Nistelrooy 02/03
Cristiano 07/08 - Keane 99/00 - Scholes 06/07 - Beckham 98/99

Honestly I forgot about Beckham. He had 9 goals 12 assists in the league in 00/01 as well - it was his most productive season, so does he get in on that basis? With Stam of that season then squeezing in ahead of Rio (I'd give 08/09 to Vidic)?

Picking 99 Beckham makes sense for team balance, but 1999 Dwight Yorke was unbelievable.

As an individual season from a player, it's one of the best in the Fergie era in my opinion - would even given RVP 12/13 a run for his money for a position up top.

Schmeichel 95/96

Rafael 12/13 - Bruce 92/93 - Rio 06/07 - Irwin 93/94

Beckham 00/01 - Keane 98/99 - Scholes 07/08 - Ronaldo 08/09

Cantona 96/97

Ruud 02/03

Valencia was a winger in 12/13. Louis Van Gaal converted him to a full back, and he had some growing pains until he actually got quite good there under Mourinho

Rafael? :D :)

Cantona 94

Rooney 08.

Yeah, he was our 2nd or, at worst, 3rd best player that season — van Persie was the clear standout with Carrick & Rafael following him. Individually it's probably better than any campaign by Neville even though the latter obviously beats Rafa on longevity and average level (as well as, crucially, availability).

Got my years mixed up, it's all a blur at this stage. But, yeap Rafael was brilliant. Duly amended.

@harms want to have a go at the best of the rest? And maybe a combined XI

Shearer 94/95
Henry 03/04

Hazard 16/17
Toure 13/14
Vieira 97/98
Salah 19/20

Cole 09/10
Terry 04/05
Campbell 01/02
Cancelo 21/22

Cech 05/06

Shame that Kanchelskis 94/95 can't be a part of the lineup, he was immense that year.

We didn't win the title in 09/10. It was Evra's best season though.

00/01 Stam also only played 15 games - it was when he did his Achilles?

Much harder to pick than it seems. Given that there were some of my favourites that I had pick no matter what

Beckham isn't anyone's 99 entrant for balance.
He's in there as he was a phenomenon that season, coming 2nd in the Ballon D'or.

I completely missed that. So just change Keane, Scholes and Neville to different years.

Like I said the years are pretty interchangeable due to our continued success as well as a lot of players appearing in multiple generations.

This is it.

Most people without Wayne Rooney in their team? The guy could do it all and is quite clearly massively underrated. Technically, one of the best we’ve ever had. Our record goal scorer.

Yeah it’s kinda mad. People forget how much of an absolute monster he was.

The goal against Newcastle and Man City was it for me. People keep harping back to Rooneys contract situation. Put that aside and judge based on football. He was the best or one of.

I wanted to include Rooney, he’s undoubtedly a United all time great. But problem is we didn’t win the league during both of his best seasons for the club (09/10 and 11/12).

06/07 Rooney has a shout. But he's competing against Cantona for the SS role

Mixing it up a bit, trying to pick a team of players who wouldn't likely be contenders for SAFs best ever XI.

Yorke 98-99
Ole 02-03
Nani 10-11
Sharpe 93-94
Carrick 12-13
Ince 92-93
Park 08-09
Silvestre 99-00
Pallister 96-97
Brown 07-08
Barthez 00-01

Nani ------ Yorke ------ Ole
Sharpe ------- Carrick ------ Ince ------- Park
Silvestre - Pallister - Brown
Barthez

It's not about his career, it's about one season and not just one season — a title-winning one. This is where Rooney gets unlucky — his best season was 09/10 but he got injured and we've lost to Chelsea. His earlier peak is in contention with Cristiano, Scholes' playmaking peak and Vidić who has to make the team based on criteria. And it's not like his competitors like van Nistelrooy 02/03, van Persie 12/13 and Yorke 98/99 (Cantona is out of contention) don't have a stellar title-winning season under their belt.

Beckham isn't anyone's 99 entrant for balance.

Well yeah, you need a RM (if you're Hong with 2 strikers which most would) in the team and Beckham is obviously the only choice in that regard, and 99 was his best year... Ronaldo in 08 was the closest competition but he was really a RW.

ah stop no Roy Keane, whatever your views on other players, he needs to be in,

Schmeichel 95/96
Neville 96/97 Vidic 10/11 Ferdinand 07/08 Irwin 92/93
Beckham 98/99 - Keane 99/00 - Scholes 06/07 - Ronaldo 07/08

——————— Berbatov ————————
Ronaldo —— Cantona ——Kanchelskis
————— Verón — Scholes —————
Irwin —— Stam —— Rio —— Beckham
———————— VdS —————————

Silky FC I name them. Beckham playing RB, no midfield protection out of possession but, my word, when we get the ball we’ll see some beautiful football.

Fergusons greatest title imo were the the first one in 92/93 and the one in 06/07 when we wrestled off an ultra dominant Chelsea side after relatively poor seasons. So my first 11 includes players from those teams (Keane being the excpetion):
Goalkeeper: vds
RB: Gary Neville
LB: Irwin
CB: Vidic
CB: Ferdinand
RW; Ronaldo
LW: Giggs
CM: Scholes
CM: Keane
FWD: Rooney
FWD: Cantona

Big Pete 95-96
Neville 06-07
Ferdinand 07-08
Vidic 08-09 (one of the best seasons I've ever seen from any United defender, Should have won the POTY award, but everyone remembers that one match against Torres)
Irwin 98-99 :D (VERY unlucky Evra for his form between 06-09)

Keane 98-99 (could have picked quite a few seasons)
Scholes 06-07

Beckham 98-99
Cantona 95-96
Ronaldo 07-08

Yorke 98-99

Yorke over RVN (02-03) is probably the most controversial but I wonder how many goals each scored from the penalty spot that season and how many assists RVN got that year. Yorke got 29 goals and 20+ assists I believe; I remember him missing a penalty but I don't remember him scoring a single one. Ruud got 42 goals I believe in 02-03.

Great Dane 92/93
Rafa 12/13 Stam 99/00 Vidic 06/07 Irwin 96/97
Beckham 98/99 Keane 00/01 Scholes 10/11 Ronaldo 07/08
Cantona 95/96 RVN 02/03

ah stop no Roy Keane, whatever your views on other players, he needs to be in,
Keane is a glaring miss of course. Just going by my personal style, where I really admired the Carrick - Scholes axis that transformed us in 06/07, which showed class and panache in controlling games without the need for brutality haha. I love Keane though, just always had Carrick as my fav player.

Not having Rooney, Beckham, Ferdinand/Vidic in were hard too. But first and foremost I wanted that midfield of silky tempo dictators, flanked by dribbling forwards.
