Hello chaps, can someone explain what I need to do to set this up and is it easy?

Had my Xbox a few years, bought from new, but never looked into it. Finally decided to set it up and fancy doing it today so it is ready for a few games later on.

What do I need to buy/do and is it straightforward?

My broadband connection is in my room and is a wired ethernet one. I plan to play the Xbox in the front room next door.

I am not too keen on bothering with it if it is going to be shit (ie constant lag etc)

Quick replies would be helpful as want to sort it today if poss!

Cheers

Really easy. Ethernet cable direct from XBox to your Modem or Router and you're done.

Sometimes it won't pick it up so simply turn everything off. Turn your modem/router on first then your Xbox and it should work.

If it's separate rooms you can either get a long ethernet cable from somewhere like Maplins depending on the size places like Tesco go up to 5m-10m. If you don't want to go that route you will need a wireless adapter for your 360 unless it's the new wireless version. Then just purchase xbox live!

eBay.

When I lived at my folks the modem was downstairs and my 360 was upstairs so I bought a huge cable off ebay for about 3 quid whereas Maplin charge about £20.

Cheers chaps, does it make much difference if I buy a wireless adapter or use a wired connection?

In relation to lag and quality etc

I work for an IT supplier. A 5 metre cat5e cable costs us about 0.45 cent

It is the product we make the most margin out of of and we sell hundreds of the bastards

As cw states shop around and never pay more than a couple of quid for them

Wired is usually better and cheaper, however you have the pain of a wire trailing around.

Yeh exactly.

Maplin tried to rape me on the 20m cable that I got.

Cheeky cnuts.

Wired is better but wireless should be fine if you have a decent router but you have to buy the microsoft wireless bit for the back of your 360 and they're about £25 iirc.

Does this effect what I pay for my broadband if it is wired up to it btw?

I can't see any reason why it should. It's never affected mine.

You'll love it mate. Once you get online you'll never go back. I don't play SP modes anymore because MP is where all the fun is to be had.

Don't forget with XBox you have to pay a monthly fee to play online though.

Thanks for all the help.

So is it as simple as buying either a) a long ethernet cable and plugging it in or b) buying a wireless adapter and attaching it to the back of my 360?

Then I am good to go? No settings to alter anywhere?

Seems to easy!

£31.99 - £33.99 on Amazon. I also managed to renew mine for £22.99 (though they have got me on auto-renew for £40 which isn't too bad)

re: wireless

depends on which xbox you have. The new slimline versions have the wireless adaptor built-in

If you have the choice though, go for wired everytime. Quicker connections

It really can be that easy.

With a router it's much easier but when I was at my folks it was more of a pain because the PC was plugged into the only available slot on the Modem so I had to use the PC as a kind of router.

This was a pain because it meant I had to turn the PC on to play online and then if my dad was fecking about on the PC it would affect the connection quality.

You will find solutions to all problems either on here or by a quick Google check though. I'm far from a tech expert and I manage.

X-Box live subscription/account required

though 40 quid for a year is not bad

Bollocks, it seems I will have to be less of a skinflint and upgrade my Sky Broadband to the unlimited one. At the moment I have the free version which is part of the Sky HD and Sky Talk package.

Damn, I was looking forward to smashing a few Caftards on Fifa!!

You think you would anyway :p

I have played online a few times on my mates PS3 - seems good, although everyone seems to pick Chelsea!

I am a fan of going different teams

Shop around for the XBL Gold subscription. You can get it for around £27 from some sites.

I haven't renewed XBL and Microsoft are trying their hardest to get me back. I've had two offers recently:

40% off and 2 free games (R-Type and some other one whose name escapes me)

OR

20% off and Fable 3 OR Halo Reach OR a choice of 2 Kinect games.

I already have Halo and we have Fable 3 at work. I'm holding out for 75% off and £50 M&S vouchers or something

Im still on the free broadband and use my xbox live

Christ's sake. Every time I turn my Xbox on I have to change the settings on my router or it cuts out half way through a game. I believe the answer is assigning a static ip to the Xbox? How would one go about doing this?

You can also connect your laptop to the xbox and use the laptop as a kind of virtual network adapter. I've done it myself before, there are help guides on the net with step by step instructions.

Yeh I used to use my PC to that effect. Was a bit of a pain though because it meant it had to be on when I was playing XBox and my connection suffered if anyone used it.

I only really did it at uni. Laptop was on most of the time anyway and I was the only one to use it. I suppose it is only good as an alternative to a ton of wiring or a more expensive wireless adaptor.

That's not the problem, I've got a wireless adaptor, but every time I turn the Xbox on it changes its IP address meaning the router settings have to be changed. Never used to have this problem, hate it when technology does its own bastarding thing.
