My mate got the dreaded RROD last night, he went on the Microsoft website to sort it out this morning and, how's this for bad luck, apparently the warranty to fix it for free for his machine ran out last night!

Any advice on what he can do?

You reckon he has a case for getting on the phone and getting them to do it anyway even though it's out of warranty?

Cheers.

Get him to send it to MS anyway. Out of interest how old is his machine? The warranty for the RROD is 3 years. My console was just over 3 years old, and i had also opened it up, breaking the seals. I got the RROD, sent it off to MS in hope they wouldn't bother checking it. 2 weeks later, i received a brand new console and a months free Xbox live.

The date of purchase the website gives you is often prior to the date you actually bought it, it was in my case, if he's got his receipt tell him to bring it back to the shop he bought it from immediately.

Cool. Cheers for the help.

He's been onto MS and they have told him they will collect it.

Out if interest, if he gets a brand new console does that mean he will lose his current gamer tag?

A whole months Xbox Live free, which you can buy for £4.95; is supposed to compensate?

I suppose they are just giving you back the month of live you would have missed out on.

Mine has got it last week, but I don't think I have the warranty, so it'd be extremely pointless to send it anywhere. I will probably look into it and if I can't fix it, I will wrap it up in a towel and burn.

you dont need the warranty, phone the helpline and they will arrange to get it off you. MS will fix this issue without a warranty i didnt have mine and it was not an issue, its the only problem they fix without the warranty

If you love your console DO NOT WRAP IT UP in a towel, this will only make the situation in the long term.
@cw1984 :There is an effective way to fix your console as I just did a few days ago but it involves opening the 360 completely, it's not really difficult but it really involves a risk of you breaking your console. There are some very good clips in youtube which could help your friend with ROD problems when of course the guaranty doesn't run anymore

Will do, there's not much use in it anyway so I can just let them repair it, or burn it.

Such a shame that my PS3 doesn't work either, when I turn it on it works for about a second and then it becomes too quiet, and there's no picture on my screen. Weird. I will probably take it to some service nearby, should have done it ages ago.

Places like GAME and Gamestop sometimes take in your broken 360 and give you a refurbished one as replacement (as long as you have the receipt). I know a few people who've done this, apparently they take in the broken ones, send them to microsoft and when they come back to them they keep them out the back as replacements.

Cheers kouroux, my mate has got it sorted though. Someone will be coming to collect his console some time this week.

Quick question. Just got a 360 as a gift. Loving it so far. I've already made my peace with the inevitable RRoD, but is there anything I have to do now to make sure I'm covered when it eventually happens?

is it a new 360 or 2nd hand one? if its a 2nd hand one look on the back of it and see the manufacturing date, it will be covered for 3 years after that date.

i would register it on the xbox.com website

It's a new one. What do I need to know to register it?

How do I actually go about sending it off? Mine hasn't broken down yet, but it's not without it's foibles, so I'm pretty sure it'll happen eventually. I know I've asked this question before some time, but I can't remember the answer, and feck knows where it was.

I presume its the same for Norway, but for UK you register it on xbox.com (see below), then you go to the support section and click the repair link on the right hand side, they email you labels, print them out, get a box that it will fit it, put the xbox on its own, no HDD or anything else, into the box, tape the label to it, go to DHL website link in email, arrange for them to pick it up, wait a few weeks for it come back.

go here to register it

https://service.xbox.com/servicehome.aspx?mkt=en-gb&scrx=1

i think you just need the serial code which is on the back of the console, near the usb port where you put the wireless adapter

the link might need to be changed depending on the country you are in
