WSL 23/24 | chat - but mostly United miscellaneous

Arsenal knocked out of the CL on pens. Finished 3-3. Paris FC win on pens. Russo scored two goals.

I am genuinely so desperate for us to somehow beat PSG. The men’s team is depressing that this team is the only hope.

Surprised that we're ahead of PSG but also surprised to see Real there. I was under the impression they weren't all that serious about their team.
Madrid, like us, were late arrivals - but they decided to take over an existing (based in Madrid) Liga team. Since then they've been recruiting steadily with an aim of challenging Barcelona (of course!). Since they became Real Madrid they've been second, third, second in La Liga - basically taking over from clubs like Atletico, Levante and Real Sociedad.

They now have a big chunk of the Spanish team, plus a few carefully selected foreign additions. They don't have as big a budget as Barcelona, but I think that's at least partly because the players who cost the highest prices and get the highest wages wouldn't choose to go there yet (unless the wages were massively more than Barca, Lyon Chelsea, Arsenal etc)

Guessing they factor contract length like transfermarkt hence no Earps? Though guess her position would come into it too.

I would guess age is a factor, although Kerr seems to bypass that. But I definitely agree goaltenders are not valued as much! I think the site has improved since they started doing that value 1-2 years ago when I first saw it.

Russos value seem to be overrated, not sure what she has done in the WSL to deserve to be 3rd overall. But of course market value will include commercial factors as well which Russo is dominant on! I still think Arsenal have a strategy with getting her more than football, they see the potential to grow as a brand with her in their side.

Very predictably, Bright has replaced Eriksson as the new club captain. She’s going into her 10th season at the club.

Interesting article on ACL injuries:
https://www.skysports.com/football/...me-and-the-technology-and-solutions-to-fix-it

As the intensity and speed of the game increases it looks like the issues are getting worse and not just at the top level. Inevitably though most of the current knowledge and research on ACL injuries, prevention and treatment, relates to male players.

Some of that may be directly applicable to the women's game - including training during adolescence and changes in training patterns when players move clubs and countries - but needs tuning. Some of it may be specific to women - like affects of the menstrual cycle and differences in physiology.

The balance between club and international football is also significant. It's an issue in men's football but most of the same complaints apply to the women's game (where there an even bigger emphasis on international football) and some of the recovery time gaps are even worse.

54k watching arsenal losing atm  c,mon liverpool!!

Russo doing the Lord's work and making them suck!

FT Arsenal 0-1 Liverpool.

Get in! Beat them on Friday and we’re six points ahead after two matches.

What a perfect set up for fridays game, they will be shaken and a win for us would all but end there title hopes after the first 2 games.
perfect revenge for Russo and coming for Earps

You love to see it.

Annoyingly though I think it'll make them ultra up for it against us.

54,115 Arsenal crowd.

Is that sold tickets or people actually at the game?

I recall it was said Arsenal used sold tickets as attendance not the amount of people who actually showed up to the game last season!

Nice to read, hopefully keeps it up

Was it deliberate? I'm not sure on this one.

Which one of them? Two strikes to the face

Its impossible to tell if either was on purpose, but I feel like James could not give darn, haha. Like if it happens it happens.

City leading Chelsea 1-0 at the moment (20 minutes in). Obviously I'd sooner they both lost.

Alex Greenwood gets a second yellow, this time for timewasting and that's a red card.

Ridiculous decision from the ref, but heh it's City and Alex Greenwood, so...

Incredible red card decision

Sidebar but a striker wearing number 2 is insane behaviour.

That's the right call from the ref,

She took and age and more to play the ball, clear time wasting and strong reffing.

Another red for City - Lauren Hemp picked up a yellow for yellow for dissent and now she gets a (deserved) yellow for a professional foul. City down to 9, still lead 1-0 with about ten minutes to play,

Amazingly City were still in with a shout of scoring a couple of times there :smirk:

8 minutes added, 6 of those remaining - still 1-0 and City have started defending.

Bundled it over the line. Wtf is this game

City were down to 8 players for that corner as well. Crazy stuff.

Credit to City to be fair. We were awful for most of that game. Relieved to get a point in the end.

Good result for us. They have to sort out that timewasting rule though, just have it so the ref whistles a warning and if they don't take it within a couple of seconds it's a booking, doesn't seem hard.

City handled that well, but I've got to say that they had some self inflicted wounds today (though I don't think the ref had a good match either)

A red for timewasting is avoidable, even though it was ridiculous if there hadn't been a pre-warning from the ref (maybe there had been one at the last freekick or something?). Yellows for dissent are just lessons to be learned and City paid for that as well. They were down to 8 players at the corner - maybe her cramp was that desperate, but I'm not even convinced about that.

That said, they were lucky that Sam Kerr was missing chances and Lauren James was looking below her best. City's players in general performed better than Chelsea's.

At any rate they clung on to the draw so all our rivals dropped points and that's got to be a good thing.

greenwood took 22-26 seconds before she hit the ball, the replay only shows half of the time wasting or whatever she was doing. silly by greenwood, correct by the ref.
