Remember what everyone has been saying...United need depth...some areas, it is wise to have a 3rd choice (4th choice with utility players like Phil and O'Shea) capable of playing against world class opposition...
the team definitely needs a striker...
the team needs a backup at RW/LW...or a starter if Becks or Giggs are sold...and an adequate backup to the new starter...
quality backup at RB/LB...perhaps a young player to develop at CB...
If Keane remains at CM, do you move Silvestre to CB or go after Ayala or another veteran CB?
If Keane moves to CB, do you go after a DM like Baraja?
Does Barthez stay? There really isn't a keeper available that can compare to Barthez. SAF is not going to find many takers on Barthez' 45000 per week salary...and keeping Barthez to teach Howard is ideal...If SAF was going to unload Barthez, I think he will do this by 30 June, as the top GKs on his list will be gone, MTL...Rustu will probably sign by then with a new team...I do feel that Barthez will remain...and so will Giggs...but I do think it is possible that Becks will be sold for the right price...
If things go the way I foresee, this could very well be United's team next season...
GK- Barthez, Howard, Steele
RB- Gazza, Escude, Phil
CB- Rio, Mexes, Brown
CB- Ayala, O'Shea, Keane
LB- Silvestre, O'Shea, Phil
LW- Giggs, Quaresma, Richardson
AM- Veron, Scholes, Fletcher
DM- Keane, Butt, Fortune
RW- Becks, Quaresma, Ole
ST- Ronaldhino, Ole, Scholes
ST- RVN, Forlan, Bellion
That would be 7 new faces...and approximately 35m spent on transfer fees...but that is some great depth...and selling Becks alone would pay for all of these players mentioned...Ole could start at RW...and we know that Ole, Giggs, Keane, Butt, Scholes, Veron, Fortune, Gazza, Brown, Becks, and Rio have had their injury concerns over the last 2 seasons...depth is a must...and talented youth at depth is priceless...
It is possible that SAF may keep Carroll as Steele is not yet ready to be 3rd choice...or is he?
