As to who is the third all time career best scorer currently playing in the Manchester United squad?

Counting all career goals, including those in U21 Internationals, as of today,

1. RVN - 161
1. Ole - 161
3. ?

I knew that Laurent Blanc had been very much a scoring defender. But, to the extent of outscoring everybody else on our squad, aside from our two best strikers, I was in for a big surprise. Long career, though!

He played as a striker for a few years if I'm not mistaken.

Can anyone do a quick calculation to see how his career goals-per-game tallies compared with Big emile Heskey's???

Now that will be interesting....

How about that? ;) :D

fecking hell what a fecking player. More than we know through seeing it through our own eyes.

76 goals in 243 games for Montpellier

Anyone remember him playing for them against United in 1991?

What a fecking pity he played for shite like them and Marseille instead of signing for us.

I doubt he really played as a striker. But, if he did, then surely Montpellier must be the place he did that at.

Blanc played as a defender. I remember the game well, great goal by Clayton Blackmore (btw)

What competition? Cup Winners' Cup, I guess? And what final score/aggregate score?

United 3-1 on agg.

1-1 at home . Lee Martin scored equaliser we all thought we were out.

The 2-0 away. Blackmore free kick top corner as i remeber.

ECWC 1991 Q/F.

Mad lad Valderama played for them.

Laurent should have known at that time we were the ones for him, where he could play till he would retire ;) :D Too bad, he did not come earlier. But, sure, better late than never. He did not give us his best, but he has contributed in an intangible way. Will be held in high esteem at Old Trafford.

another amazing stat, he went on 16 years from the start at his carrer from 83 to 99 without a yellow card. Amazing feat for a defender.

Don't bother, they will tell you Heskey is a better defender. I don't know why these loonypool geezers don't just play him as a sweeper if that's what he is meant to do.

Hate to be picky - but Lee Martin scored for Montpellier! Own goal. Brian McClair scored for United. Bruce (pen) was the other scorer in France. Aad since this thread is about a great goalscoring defender, that was the season Bruce scored 19!

I never said Lee Martin scored for us.

You picky bastard.

It's a pity we only managed to get Larry in the twighlight of his career. But it's been worth it anyway.
Fergie has already acknowledged Larry's direct influence in the development and blossoming of O'Shea into a quality defender.
I don't think it's likely to happen, I'm sure the St. Tropez summer is calling, but if we could just persuade Blanc to stay on as defensive coach it would be a real coup and investment.

Create a post of defensive coordinator :) As they have it in American Football ;) Blanc would be our first.

There is are defenders playing in the game, and then there is Laurent Blanc. Boy, it is so evident that the man in a class apart in defending. He is quick to spot the action and closes down his marksman so deceivingly quickly. On build up, play, Blanc gets the edge on almost every other defender. It struck my eye immediately when he came on today. I did not have the eye to observe meticulously how Silvestre and Brown's styles, but I surely think that this aspect of Blanc's game can and should be learnt by any defender. When you add to that game the speed that Wes Brown, Mikael Silvestre, John O'Shea and Rio Ferdinand have, it does not get much better. :D

Blanc is a treat to watch defending when he is not chasing somebody ;) :D
