Would Duff fit in well?

According to the Sun, SAF wants Damien Duff of Blackburn, because of his versatility (left winger, central and up-front)
Blackburn will ask for around 12 million....
Would he fit into the team well??

From 'The Sun'

DAMIEN DUFF is being hunted by Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson.

Old Trafford chief Fergie sees the Blackburn winger, 23, as the right man to help United crank up their Premiership title charge.

Fergie would have to part with around £12million to land the Republic of Ireland international, who emerged as one of the big hits of last year's World Cup.

But he would not hesitate to splash such a large amount - even though the player is currently out of action with a hamstring injury.

Duff has spent his entire career at Ewood Park and has steadily built on his reputation as one of the Premiership's best wide men.

He can play on the left, down the middle or - as proved by former Republic manager Mick McCarthy in Japan 2002 - as an out-and-out striker.

It is the sheer versatility that attracts Ferguson, who has already admitted it could be time to rebuild the squad at Old Trafford.

Inter Milan have confirmed Sunsport's exclusive that they want to sign Ryan Giggs for around £20m and will make another effort to land the Welshman this summer.

Giggs only recently signed a new contract at Old Trafford but Fergie has never been afraid to get rid of established stars - as he proved with Mark Hughes, Paul Ince and Jaap Stam.

Giggs and has been left on the bench for the past two matches.

United fans have also grown frustrated with his form, with some believing there is no longer an end product to his play.

He has not scored a league goal at Old Trafford since April 2000 and on top of that Giggs had the vice-captaincy taken away from him by boss Ferguson at the start of the season.

Blackburn boss Graeme Souness will fight tooth and nail to keep prize asset Duff but he knows the bottom line is money talks.

United have already been in for Tottenham sensation Simon Davies but were knocked back for the Wales international.

His addition would jeoperdize Richardson's chances of making it with the first team for atleast 2-3 more years IMO. But nonetheless it would be a very good buy.

I like Duff, but I think our first priority should be a striker. I know the article says he can play as a striker but is he really effective when he plays up front? Has anyone here seen him play as a striker?

I think we're asking for trouble if we don't strengthen our strike force during the transfer window. Something's very wrong when a team like United doesn't have the squad depth to have a striker on the bench for crucial league matches. We can't afford to continue going into matches with 2 strikers. And besides injury, now we're going to have to start thinking about suspensions as well. Apparently, Ole's on 4 yellow cards (I don't know how many Ruud's on). I just think having that extra striker could be crucial for us during the 2nd half of the season.

He plays there a lot for Ireland, most prefer him as a winger but he is an effective striker and scores his fair share of goals.

Im not in favour of buying him atm, we need a striker, someone who will score regularily, not a makeshift striker, we have three of those already!

He scores feck all when he plays upfront along Robbie Keane and its only when he goes wide does he start to look a threat. Having Giggs through the middle and DD out wide could be an option but Giggsy's finishing would have to improve a hell of a lot.

Who said anything about only being allowed to buy one player. IMO if Damian Duff is available, Alex would be silly to exclude himself from buying Damian. I agree that we also need a centre forward but surely buying Duff would not impede an opportunity to add to our striking department.

We don't need to buy Duff as an auxillary striker if Ole/RVN/Diego get injured or suspended. We have Nardiellio/Timm/Webber etc who can come in for a couple of games. If we buy Duff it will be as replacement/cover for Giggs.
Also if Duff was to be the only player we bought Giggsy could easily play through the middle as a second striker with Duff on the left.
He's a tremendous player, and important a player who will run at defenders. Like Giggsy used to do.

Is it really true Giggsy hasn't scored a league goal since April 2000? That's appalling if it is.

From all the noises coming out of Old Trafford, it doesn't seem like we have the money to get both a quality striker and a quality left-winger while the transfer window is open. Maybe, this is all posturing on our part, but I have a feeling it's not. It doesn't seem like we're exactly swimming in money these days. And if we spent £12 million on Duff and bought a decent striker, we're probably talking £15 to £20 million. I don't think the plc's going to let Fergie spend that kind of money right now. Agreed though that ideally we'd reinforce both positions because Giggsy really does need some competition. Although Scholesy does okay there, he plays a lot beter as a central midfielder and I think it's too early for Richardson.

But on Wednesday, we were really crying out for another striker on the bench. Although Giggsy can play as a striker I'd hate for him to be considered as our 4th striker for the rest of the season. Giggsy has a lot of wonderful qualities, finishing isn't one of them. With all the crosses Becks was putting in and the chances our midfielders were creating, an in-form striker could have had a hat-trick on Wednesday. Unfortunately, both Diego and Ole had off days. Normally, you'd just look at your bench, put on another striker and hope that it would be his day. Unfortunately, when we looked at the bench, all we had was Giggsy. And although I thought Giggsy could change the game with his ability to run at people, I didn't look at him as a striker who would come in, get in the box, and put away those chances. And I think that's what we really need right now.

exactly, mccarthy's insistence on playing him at forward incined people to think he was useful there. far better as an out and out old fashioned winger
