Gone to bed.
There's some people on tv running about for medals or something. Just started on BBC1.

How many medals will Great Britain win in this competition?

I don't know much about athletics these days but I'm going to say....

Your illustrious leadership would be "ecstatic" with around 3 medals--possibly Jessica Ennis and/or Kelly Sotherton in the heptathlon, maybe Phillips Idowu in the long jump, or the men's 4/100 relay if someone like the USA or Jamaica drop the baton.

That sounds about right. I was thinking of Ennis and Idowu for medals. Sotherton's off form right now so I don't think she'll be "in the mix".

I'm just pleased there's something on TV after midnight to watch besides all those crappy quiz channels.

I can't see any of our sprinters winning medals. UK athletics is in a sorry state at the moment.

Despite the fact the US is the world power in track, I'll have trouble finding decent coverage of the meet over here. I'd settle for a midnight show and a few highlights, but the "sports channels" are stocked with pre-season (gridiron) football and poker tournaments.

Agree with that. Idowu will never have a better chance of medalling in a major championships.

Britain also have a great chance in the 100 relay - there's 3 of them in the semis, the US have only got one - probably one of their weakest 100m teams for some time.

I've got money on Powell to win tomorrow.

May the best athletes who manage to pass a drugs test win :D

Headline on BBC

Gay storms to 100m world title

not very politically correct is it, may have to report the BBC for that

I think I'll leave athletics predictions to the experts from now on

And it seems that the World's Fastest Man is Gay...

Theres no credibility in Athletics ......was watching people throwing things and some of those bodies were not made by lifting weights.....nothing more weighty than a syringe anyway.
Athletics is very predictable.
Events happen......people get medals
Two days later rumours circulate in the Athletes Village.
Then much tut tutting among the experts.
If athlete is foreign "there were always rumours...just like I thought"
If British "probably a massive miscarriage of justice....a genuine mistake".
Two months later medals withdrawn.
Athlete swears he will fight all the way to restore his/her good name......and doesnt.
Gets banned.
Wont/cant return prize money....and the defence is "everybody does it"
Finishes ban. Gets selected again.
No credibility

:D :D :D

Did you jsut see that?

WOW, Fantastic!

Christine Ohuruogu got the Gold in the 400, Nicola Sanders took Silver. 1 & 2 for GB.

And such a tight finish , dipping at the line, both came from behind.

And after all that Ohuruogu has been through, Hollywood on alert me thinks. :)

Really pleased.

You can watch the Women's 400m and the medal ceremony here :) >>

Like when Kelly Holmes won her double gold in Athens, or London hosting the 2012 Olympics, makes you feel so proud and emotional.

Gay on course for sprint double. :nervous:

Which he did indeed achieve by the way.

And coming up, we've got Jeremy Wariner who's going for Michael Johnson's World Record at 400m.

And the beginning of the heats for the Sprint Relay, and they're always something to watch. Could hopefully be another medal on the cards for Britian in the relays, Men's 4x100 and or Women's 4x400.

So Wariner came up a bit short, but the US swept the 400. I'm looking forward to the 4x400 relay.
Allyson Felix turned in a great 200 meter, not bad for a 21 year old.
Once again, to total indifference here in the USA, our track and field team is demonstrating it's superiority. I wonder how we'd do if the media actually paid attention to the sport and promoted it in any fashion.

I always thought track and field was pretty big in the states? At least that's the impression i've always got in the uk.

EDIT - and I don't mean the old arcade game.

We have lots of participants and an occasional meet gets a good crowd, but media coverage is slack at best. In our local paper (for a population of around 2 1/2 million people) normally spends about 3 sentences in the sports section on the results of the World Championships. Television coverage is equally insignificant and usually poorly done.
It's only around Olympics time that we remember that it's a great sport.

In Fresno, the best coverage is for the "North American Pole Vault Championships," and outdoor event in the suburb of Clovis where one of the streets in Old Town is converted into the runway and pit and we get crowds of around 3-4000 or more out to cheer on the competitors.
