So a few weeks ago when I was purchasing some new cricket gear I was informed Woodworm were going bust, and the current stock would be the last they could order... This surprised me because it's plain to see Woodworm make some absolutely fantastic equipment, be it their bats, pads or gloves.

Could someone please explain to me how, or why exactly Woodworm went bust?

Incidentally I bought myself a pair of their pads and gloves, both of which are just brilliant (especially for the price - compared to the other generic brands). I was keen on one of their bats too, but opted for an Albion (it was out of a Woodworm, Newbery and the Albion).

Not sure how, but while they looked flashy, and supposedly had all the technology, I found Woodworm to be very over-rated, and over priced.

I have a Gray-Nicholl's two scoop. Beautiful bat, and the best middle since the Duncan Fearnly I had when I was 12.

I have only ever seen a cricket bat explode when hitting a ball twice, both occasions it was a woodworm bat, brittle as feck.

I agree with saints, I have a Gray Nicholls and they are lovely bats, well balanced and have good middles on them, without being as heavy as hell.

Hrm, must be different down our way. For the $50 I spent on the gloves they were easily the equivalent/better of the rest of the similarly priced stock, and even some of the gloves worth twice as much.

The pads I bought for $90 were the best for the price, I thought.

As for my bad, I bought an Albion AX1000 ($300). Obscure brand, definitely not known for anything but their helmets really. But boy is this one fine piece of wood - you know when you pick up a bat and you just know it's 'the one.'

The lad at the store was telling me how he bought this as a 'double' for his $600 Kookaburra, one that he could use with the bowling machines so as to not feck up his good bat, but after using it for the first time he said the Kookaburra hasn't seen the light of day since.

I had a go of his in the nets, and feck me if it's not the nicest bat I've ever handled (at that price range).

So the bats are shite, well that explains pretty much everything.

And lucky I didn't opt for one then!

Apparently its all down to how they dry the wood, GN air dry it so it dry slowly and keeps its strength, Woodworm and others, like MRF, kiln dry it and that makes the wood brittle.

You also cant judge them on what the pro's use as the bat tha KP uses is nothing like the one you pay 300 quid for

Aaah I see, so they bake the willow, well that certainly explains their brittle nature.

Yeah, plus it all depends on the type of willow, English is best but many use Kashmiri willow that is much more brittle.

Never seen any Albion bats. Ill have to keep an eye out and give one a try but Im very happy with GN, always have had their bats, even if you buy one of the cheaper models in any of their ranges

You handled a GN 'Legend' per chance?

When I was buying my gear my mate decided to lump $780 for the 'Legend.' THE top of the line cricket bat.

It's magnificent, though why you'd want to spend that much on a bat, when you can get yourself a fantastic bat for less than half as much baffles me.

And the Albion is great! They're reknowned for their helmets though, ast least that's what I associate them with (they started the whole stack-hat thing back in '03/04).

It's the first bat there, they seem to have the captions for the bats the wrong way around though.

Ahhhh... i'm only kidding mate... of course fair play to them.... dont think "real" Aussie men would appreciate gay lads in their cricket club anyway!

hehe, I know I know.

And I'm not one to discriminate. One of my best mates is a gayer and I don't think any less of him.
