Wonder Horse

A friend of mine thought he was pulling out of the Irish Champkion Hurdle and laid massively on him.

It's funny that this thread has attracted virtually no interest, and hardly anyone here has probably heard of the animal. Yet he's arguably as good as Shergar, and he was quite well known (i'm talking about during his racing career rather than the kidnapping)

I've heard of him, don't watch a huge amount of racing but the name came up often enough this year for me to catch on, and it's certainly been an amazing year so far. It'll be interesting if he runs in the Arc.

I wouldn't be surprised at all at the lack of response to a thread on him though, Racing isn't something that tends to get fairweather fans. You get people betting on the National and so on, but to have heard much about a horse winning a couple of Classics, you'd have to follow racing a bit. A few papers ran large stories about the Timeform rating when that came out, but apart from that it's not surprising that football fans don't know/care much about it.

Maybe it's just too intellectual a pursuit/sport. I see the UFC thread has nearly fifty pages. Unreal.

Won a few bob on him this season in the 2000 Guineas. 5 e/w at 10 or 12 If I remember correctly. Oxx is as shrewd as they come, you could see it in his eyes when he was interview before the race. He knew what was about to happen. I didnt back him since then but have enjoy all of his races to date.

The aul horses arent as popular as they used to be. Its all about the actual betting now rather than the personalities, even the associated festivals are gradually selling their respective souls.

He's probably the best horse overall in the my lifetime although Giants Causeway is still my personal favourite.

I think interest in flat racing has declined, it always was a bit of an old man's game and that has become even more pronounced. The Derby used to be a big deal but it passes without much notice these days.

The ground is gona come up good for the Arc by all accounts. Sea the Stars has a chance of being the arguably the greatest ever if he wins it and goes on to the breeder cup.

Personally Id swerve the Arc. Its a strange race full of crazy french jockeys with an awkward bend before a longish run in. The best horse sometimes doesnt win the race over there. Id prefer him to go direct to the Breeders Cup where its a more conventional race.

SEA THE STARS NEEDS LUCK IN RUNNING

Prix De Larc De Triomphe: Sea The Stars 4/6

John Oxx admits the big field is his major concern ahead of Sea The Stars' bid for glory in the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp on Sunday.

His brilliant colt is looking to follow in the most illustrious of hoofprints in Paris and while tactics don't concern the trainer, luck in running does.

"I'll leave all that (tactics) to Michael (Kinane). We'll hardly have a discussion about tactics," he told At The Races.

"He's been there before and knows what to expect and knows the horse. A big field is the headache with the Arc, you're never quite sure what's going to happen. The draw comes into it, you don't really want a particularly low draw.

"I don't mind too much where he is through the race, just getting a clear run when he wants it is probably the critical thing."

Oxx reports preparations to be still be going according to plan for his 2000 Guineas and Derby winner.

"He just cantered on Thursday morning, just a routine canter, all his fast work is done. He'll just canter now until he leaves for Paris on Saturday morning."

The handler believes Sea The Stars' ability to take his races well is a key to his chance on Sunday.

"It's part and parcel of what he is, his constitution. Most of the good horses have it," Oxx said.

"They are tougher and stand up to things better. He's had all these tough Group One races and has had to travel for all bar one of them. It puts a little extra pressure on him but to him it's no pressure.

"He makes it easy. He has this constitution. He's always fresh and well and eats up all the time. He just does enough to win very often and doesn't over exert himself. In his work he isn't over extravagant either."

DESTINY CALLS FOR KINANE

By Nick Robson and Ashley Iveson, Press Association Sport

If Sea The Stars joins the legends of the turf on Sunday by adding the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe to his stellar haul, he will provide Mick Kinane with a third win in the great race.

The weighing-room veteran turned 50 this year and has won major races all over the world.

Kinane scored in the Arc in 1989 on Carroll House and in 1999 aboard Montjeu, so the omens are positive ahead of the Longchamp showpiece.

"I've won the race in 1989 and '99, so hopefully nine is my lucky number," said Kinane.

"He's been putting weight on after his races really well and he's physically been getting very strong during the autumn.

"I don't think anyone should have any doubts about him stepping back up to a mile and a half and we haven't done anything different with him at home - it's just been a case of keeping him right.

"Longchamp as a track is a fairly straightforward, but the Arc is normally a biggish field and you always need a bit of luck too.

"There are always are plenty of horses in it that have a chance of being competitive, but obviously I hope I'm on the right horse.

"The Arc is such a great race and a great occasion and it would be very nice if the horse can add it to his CV."

There is every chance Sea The Stars will face a maximum 20-runner field after Jean-Claude Rouget's Stacelita and the Andre Fabre-trained Cavalryman were supplemented at the declaration stage - but not Michael Bell's Sariska.

There is still a chance for connections to decide against running, but 20 aspirants have nonetheless been declared.

With such a big field in prospect, John Oxx admits the draw, which is revealed on Friday morning, becomes ever more important.

"I suppose the big field is the headache with the Arc - you're never quite sure what's going to happen and the draw comes into it, you don't really want a low draw," Oxx told At The Races.

"I don't really mind where he is during the race, it's just getting a clear run when he wants it that matters.

"Everything's gone fine and I'm very happy with everything so far.

"He just did a routine canter this morning. He flies over the day before the race, Saturday morning."

Despite the number of runners, Sea The Stars is a 4-6 chance with Sky Bet, who have supplementary entries Stacelita at 12-1 and Cavalryman at 9-1.

Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe

Sky Bet bet: 4-6 Sea The Stars, 5-1 Fame And Glory, 7-1 Conduit, 9-1 Cavalryman, 12-1 Vision D'Etat, Stacelita, 16-1 Dar Re Mi, 20-1 Youmzain, Getaway, 25-1 Beheshtam, 50-1 bar.

Best of Luck to horse and jockey........

Best horse i've witnessed so far in my lifetime and I hope to God he can prove what a star he is on sunday. Unbelievable colt trained by one of the best around.

I have to oppose him at odds-on. Fame and Glory is a cracking each way bet as is Youmzain who is huge at 25s, very good chance of placing again.

It's one to watch, over 10 furlongs I'd back him even at 4/6 but 12 at this stage of the season is no value.

See The Stars did it although for a minute there...well he rsoe to the occasion.

I went looking for some value in Dar Re Me but came up empty in the end. ah well.

Luckily I didn't back what I saw as great value in FAG to place.

Try what they may, STS is just unstoppable.

Possibly the best flat horse since Dancing Brave. Lost quite a bit on Fame and Glory who ran terrible but got it back on Youmzain who deserves an enormous amount of credit for finishing second for the third straight year.

Undoubtedly imo. True about Youmzain though, once again the bridesmaid but ran another cracker in defeat.
