Had a very good game against us today and seems to perform well week in week out. I think we could do worse than consider going in for him as Smalling's long term CB partner.

Obviously he wouldn't be the European glamour signing that a lot of fans think we always have to buy, but he's pretty much a defensive rock...

Reid is older than Smalling.

How is he the long term partner? :wenger:

You don't always have to buy a shiny foreigner. Otamendi isn't all that special currently, neither is Eliaquim fecking Mangala. Someone like Hummels has been prone to feckups too quite often so yeah, quality of CB's all around the world is a bit shit. But I haven't watched a lot of West Ham to properly judge him.

He's 27. Not 28 until next summer. Hardly old for a CB really. Stam arrived at 26, Bruce at 27 - they both held positions in the team if I recall.

Nobody seemed to be objecting when we were linked with the older Otamendi in the summer....but then he was a European club glamour signing so everybody automatically thought he was the second coming!

Fair enough, don't get me wrong Reid isn't a bad player. But I think there's plenty of players with a higher ceiling.
I personally didn't want us to go with Otamendi for what it's worth.

And if we are gonna go with the homegrown route, we've got some good youngsters who play in defence in the academy too.

Ultimately we have a solid defensive record this season, but I wonder how much of that is down to the whole 'safe' and conservative style of the team playing with two Defensive midfielders.

If the shackles were removed from the rest of our players, and they were actually given free reign to attack with verve, then how solid would our actual defensive unit be? (Other than Mike)

Despite our record so far it needs addressing for next season, especially with the possibility that our saviour De Gea could still leave.

When someone gets the turn on Blind it never looks good and only for DDG again today (in the 1 on 1 in the first half) we'd've been screwed!

Good player, probably is underrated because he is from a lower PL team. Similar to how other fans still don't think Smalling is that good. Think he is a bit too similar to Smalling to be his partner though, don't think either are good enough to play out from the back. Would still take him here though for a reasonable price.

Seems to have a tendency to really raise his game when facing better quality opposition. Or maybe I just don't watch him a lot and he is very good against the lower sides too, I don't know. But when I have seen him against bigger opposition, he has been fantastic. This is especially the case of his performance against City, where everything in front of him was a little chaotic, but he stood tall and resolute. He basically carried Cresswall through that game, though Tomkins was solid as his defensive partner. Either way, he was definitely the stand out that game

He's alright. Could be at a slightly higher team but he's nothing special.

He played well today but surely all the top 6 clubs are no so inept that they missed out on him for a free just a few months ago? To me he's an Ashely Williams level good mid table club CB.

West Ham with the new stadium etc. should do everything to keep the better players in the club.. He was very good today, unfortunately..

Don't look to much in his performance tonight, we made Williamson and coloccini look like Moore and beckenbauer in our game bs Newcastle

I don't know. I don't watch West Ham a lot, to be honest. There's an interesting pattern, however, of mid-table defenders becoming world class for a day against us and then reverting back to being mediocre the very next week. I'm a bit skeptical, for now.

Well we also made Daniel Ayala look like the best CB in the world too. We have that effect.

Winston Reid has been quality for some time. Today was no different, and certainly not an isolated performance. He was immense in the season after West Ham got promoted in particular. Didn't they finish 9th that year after coming back up? Solid season, and he was their best player. Had a few injuries since, but he's solid every time I see him play.

If we wanted him, we should have offered him a pre-contract in January this year, as he was due to be a free agent that summer. He seemed to be making himself available, but nobody bit, so he signed a new deal with West Ham in March. I was surprised us or Arsenal didn't have a look. He's been a solid performer for a while, and definitely worth a punt on a free.

Like you say he's been performing well for a while and he definitely deserves a shot at a higher profile club whether it's us or elsewhere. It's staggering that nobody took him on a free last season

Better sign Otamendi for 40 million.

He was impressive today. That said, we're not exactly short in the defense department once our current injuries subside.

Opposition centrebacks look good against us very often. It's just the way these kind of games are set up, with one team defending deep and us not really quick enough to stretch them. Whenever the ball gets to the CBs, they're almost always in position, with cover, and under no great pressure, so they look like they're having a good performance. Basically, we're the team to be playing if you want to put your CB in the shop window.

Ha! we are back to to those days players like cattermole will have a blinder and fans wants them signed.

He is consistently very good. Really, really underrated. Didn't just have a one good game. Some "mid-table players" are lot better than people credit them for.

If we're going to shop in England, then go for Stones. Doesn't matter that he costs more, we have money.

I think it is very important that the Smalling's partner has good passing ability. As important as him being a good defender. So, Stones and Smalling.

I hate it when one argument for signing a player is "we could do worse".

He's a good defender and I've liked him for a long time. Not sure he's right for us though

I'd also point out that performances against us are irrelevant seeing as we're so easy to defend against.

He's been a quality premier league defender for years. Cattermole is an insulting comparison.

Barely ever watched him outside of games against the big teams. Has looked good when I have, but is he more of an 18 yard box defender than a halfway line one? (i.e. much prefers defending when play is in front of him, and there's little threat of being turned towards his own goal.)

Anyway, it doesn't look like he's moving anywhere, if he's just signed a new deal and nobody took him on a free.

Played well today but would be a downgrade on Blind in the system we play, would prefer to give Jones and McNair time ahead of him as backup.

Yup. I don't like it when blind isn't playing CB. It's just so reassuring to have that kind of ball player back there. When Smalling is paired with anyone else we end up hoofing the ball a lot more.

Wouldn't be the worst idea, if we planned on getting R(e)id of Jones due to all his injury problems. ;)

We could do worse, though we can, and probably should, be doing a (lot) better as well.

Been very good for West Ham for a few years now. Easily their best defender. Was linked with Arsenal on a free in the summer, but signed a new deal around this time last year. Would take him for a decent price. Good player.
