Read some of the original ones for my daughter recently. Was struck by how funny and well-written they are. Delightful and enjoyable for grown-ups as well.

So wacky. So desperate to be meme-d into significance.
There’s a whole big story behind that. You can look it up. But essentially the copyright on the character has now expired (think it was 99 years), so can be used freely in the public domain, with some restrictions. Mickey Mouse is the next one up to enter the public domain I believe. But as they use the mouse ears ubiquitously with their brand, the use will be more restrictive.
