Had McClaren taken over I was convinced that Rio would have legged it to Man Utd as fast as poss. Now El Tel has taken over I'm not so sure...

On one hand he will want some transfer funds, on the other he'll recognise Rio's quality. I'm hoping his eye for business(!) overshadows his managerial-won-fook-all side

Thoughts?

Interesting thought. I wonder or not whether the Rio issue was sorted before Venables took the job i.e. he had no say i.e. he's been sold!

I don't think Tel will risk his job so soon ;) Whatever Grim Risdale says, he'll do...

I'm expecting Rio to take the decision out of their hands, and put in a transfer request. Admittedly TV is popular with players, but he's only one change in the whole picture, of lower wages, poor morale, player exodus, no CL football etc.

I agree. It's up to Ferdinand. If he wants to go he'll go. If he doesn't, well, who knows. Mind you, there's a decent chance Venables can coax him into staying if he wishes to go.

Why would it be so?

Because managerial changes are an ideal excuse for players to transition out.

Well if the comments of Thuram's agent and Ayala are to be believed then ....Utd are making a major effort to sign Rio.

Rio, Duff and Gallas would be nice. :)

Couldnt agree more. Three quality young signings. None are too big for their boots, meaning they can all be reared as proper Man Utd players.
(though I admit I'm not sure which current defender is going to 'teach' Rio )

We've gone through enough pain watching established stars take a season to adjust!

Why would we need Rio and also Gallas, I think with Wes and John O'Shea and hopefully Rio, that would be enough in terms of young CB's

SKY Sports:

Leeds chairman Ridsdale says that former England boss Venables is keen to keep captain Rio Ferdinand - constantly linked with a move to Manchester United - at Elland Road

"We talked over lunch about all of our players and the players that he (Venables) wants to bring in as and when required.

"Rio Ferdinand was obviously one of those we discussed. Of course Terry would like him at Elland Road and my point of view was that he is a player who is contracted to us and, as far as I am concerned, that is the way it will stay."

:(

Ridsdale is telling Venables what Venables wants to hear.

It's not the first time a football chairman speaks with forked tongue to an enthusiastic new manager.

Remember, Leeds Plc board is the decider here, not Venables, not Ridsdale.

Leeds needs the money, Rio needs a stage to perform.

Successor to Fergie? So basically he can wait for three years and then find out Sir Alex is staying for another decade.

Good joke.

The real question is - how much of a hurry is Rio in? He's had a top WC and can take his pick - if Leeds have a poor season where will that leave him??

I think Fergie might leave in two years as well, but I don't expect a professional footballer to base his career intentions on a hunch like that.

As for Ferdinand - you are right ofcource. Then again, he might be a Le Tissier who is very loyal to his club and doesn't care about anything else.

I don't think he is that kind though, who would put club over ambition.

Hardly, if he was he'd be at West Ham still. He wants CL football, he'll be weighing up whether he thinks Leeds will make it into the CL this coming year.

Rio, Duff, Gallas?

Ship out Veron , add Lopez and Sorin plus Ronaldinho and we can rest

Now, I'm not a kemo expect so I have to ask: You aren't serious, right?

You were hurling explatives at anyone who suggested Veron should be sold just a day or so ago. You are now officially a muppet windup.

If Rio wants to come to United, Terry Venables might try to do some kind of trade.

Very true, he even went as far as to say that "anyone that wants Veron out should look at himself in the mirror".
Hes getting to be as mean as $hitgit, next thing he'll start sending viruses and threatening pm's.

Ask Marching. I don't know what players Leeds need.

The appointment of El Tel was sticking plaster, the fact that he was not contacted until Friday and a deal being done by Sunday says to me that this deal was done to keep the PLC happy. I think that MO'N is the real target, expect to see moves by Leeds towards the end of the season, so what power will El Tel have, when it comes to selling, the PLC hold all the cards, if the right price comes in for Rio he will go, El Tel will have a limited budget with which to buy players, so nothing has changed, if we put in a bid, Rio will come.
