Why was Fabien booked?

As far as I know, goalkeepers are allowed to move on the goal-line against penalties, so why was Barthez booked for standing by the post when the ref blew his whistle?

It's clearly the Fulham players' problem if he waits for Fabien to get back into position, Fab did nothing wrong, perhaps we should complain to the FA.

Fab was booked for time wasting which was probably fair enough in the situation. Since the ref had blown the whistle i believe Malbranques goal would have stood if he put it in the net while Fab was messing about.

Funny as feck that was

Not 100 % sure, but I guess if the guy had put it in the net, it would have stood yea, pitty for him he didn't then :)

The ref said after the match that he wouldn't have allowed the goal.

"time wasting" when you're about to go 2:1 down with 20min to go?

no, coz the ref said he would have disallowed it.. plus its the ref's duty to check that the keeper and forward are on their marks. he blew his whistle without checking Fab's postion...

Yea i think it was time wasting, but if the Ref had actually been looking at barthez to see if he was ready then he wouldn't have got booked.

Fact remains that Fab was on the goalline when he blew the whistle and it's totally within the rules to stand by the post. Why should Fab get booked for wanting to give Fulham a help hand?

(I'm not complaining about the whole thing though ) ;)

Are we sure that is the rule? I have a horrible feeling that Fab is going to try that once too often and a goal will stand! We were knocked out the cup because of his antics against West Ham and while I'm delighted he put Malbranque off on Saturday I hope he doesn't pay for that some time in the future .

Chris Camara PROVED that it wasn't even a penalty on Goals on Sunday yesterday...

If you've got it on video look at where the contact is...

It should have been a free kick outside the box...

Having said that Lauren Blanc was perhaps lucky to stay on as the Fulham player was clear but for him...

Good bit of gamesmanship by Barthez though... ...

Yep, a player hanging on to Laurent on the way to the box like Blanc is a train and then throwing himself off is not branded a cheat.

But Barthez is. I luv it, absolutely luv it

Great tricks.

I'd use it if i played goalkeeper professionally.

I think the rule states that the goalkeeper must be on the line when the whistle is blown, but can move about while the penalty taker takes his time to get to the ball.

Barthez was at the post and not in the right position. He had to be in the right position when the whistle is blown for the goal to have stood if malbranque tried to score.

stick to the topic.. thank you.

The ref said after the game that he wouldn't have allowed the goal. He was wrong. The rules don't state that Barthez had to be in the middle of the goal - merely between the posts and on the line - which he was. So a goal should have stood.
:. Barthez shouldn't have been booked, and the referee should be demoted for poor judgement.

Also, the penalty itself shouldn't have been awarded. Apart from that fact that the "infringement" occured outside the box, it was clearly a dive.

Did anyone see the Andy Gray analysis on Sky tonight before the Villa-Soton game. He was spot on.
After Fab had wiped his boots on his left post, and was heading back to centre-goal, the ref got embroiled on the edge of the box with 2 Utd players and 2 Fulham players who were encroaching. The ref ran backwards for 5 paces, and blew for the kick to be taken without looking at goal. Fab of course had moved to his right post by then. Steed Malwotsit couldn't take the kick as Fabbo was not in position. The mistake was the ref's.
I hope that the management appeal. All they have to do is show Andy G's anaysis of the incident. As he put it - "He booked Bartez at his own embarrassment at not having looked back".
When he did eventually take the kick, the ref was still looking at the edge of the box and not the goal. Fab did nothing wrong at all.

We all know exactly what Barthez did. I'll take the penalty save and live with the booking, thanks.

Agreed..... ......

Barthez could have no complaints about the booking, he was stretching it out as much as he could...

I'm very happy with the way it turned out...

Who said it was a dive?...

You're joking aren't you?...

We should just count ourselves lucky Blanc wasn't sent off, as the last defender he should have been if you go by the letter of the law...

Yep, by the letter of the law he should have been sent off. Which would have meant the referee doing a double mistake as Blanc did not foul Marlet.

I tried it in a game on Monday night, didnt work for me though, maybe i just dont have the head to pull it off.

Ppl pls take a few moment to reflect what PNeville said....very very true!

Phil Neville on Barthez

"People are making a big deal of the gamesmanship but a lot of 'keepers do it. I thought he was unlucky to get booked on Saturday because at the time there was a bit of pushing and shoving at the edge of the box and Fabien was just waiting for the whistle. When the referee turned his back and blew his whistle I don't think he had seen where Fabien was. When Bruce Grobbelaar did anything like that people thought it was funny, and was part and parcel of the game, but when a Manchester United player does it, it is cheating. That is the way of the world."
