Surely its been a while since we had this type of thread?

Shall I begin?

There fans have no creativity in their chants,,,i.e "Go (insert team name here) Go" "Deee-Fence"

They have all-star games..

Darren Huckerby over there is a legend..

They don't have away sections...

They don't have loyalty ballots

Teams who are shit are not penalized and have no incentive to perform once getting to the play-offs is unrealistic..i.e no relegation to lower leagues

The only legitimate knock on the SPORTS THEMSELVES there is that teams are not penalized once the playoffs are unrealistic to them. It's all up to integrity, and some organizations, (i.e. Pittsburgh Penguins) don't have it and tank to get the best picks in the draft.

Most fans are rather unoriginal, but I know my fellow Rangers fans aren't completely so (although there are a ton terrible fans with their incessant booing. Stupid New Yorkers). Either way, that doesn't have much bearing on the sports themselves so it's really quite unfair to say the sports are shit because the fans are.

The difference is football fans actually occasionally make an upheaval about stuff and take a stand when the shit hits the fan. Shareholders United against Murdoch/BSKYB in 1999 anyone? Protests and petitions for safe standing....Taking clubs to court over unfair ticket pricing and automatic cup schemes etc..

Over here in North America, "5 grand for Superbowl tickets you say? here's my VISA"

Not saying Football isn't commercialized.. It well bloody is these days. Just look at some of the rip off hospitality packages being offered by United itself. What I'm saying is, North American Sports are relatively far far far far far worse....
Where in Football you've got the Reebok, Emirates and the Allianz arenas as few stadiums named after a brand, I find it hard to find any stadiums here which don't have their team's home whored out.

Home Depot Center..I mean FFS

Some fans have creativity but for the most part they are very simple.

They have all-star games..
Some fans like these games, I do not.

Darren Huckerby over there is a legend..
He did well last year, but is far from being a legend.

They don't have away sections...
Some people do travel, but it is a minority. The United States is a bit bigger than England.
They don't have loyalty ballots

teams that are shit do not make it to the playoffs. Relegation will not work over her in the US do to owners never agreeing to this system as they could lose a lot of money.

A counter point to your commercialization is that in the NBA, NFL, and MLB they do not have sponsors on their shirts other than the brand.

I also think their is not that much passion for some sports as there are for football in England. When I went to the England vs. USA match a few years ago in Chicago with 4 friends who do not watch football, they could not believe all of the singing and chanting during the game. They count it as one of the their best times at a sporting event

Admittedly fair point, and a very unfortunate part of football today. Which is why I really commended Barcelona for the stance they've had for years, and when they did let in a sponsor, it was Unicef..

I think though the worst of the lot in that regards is NASCAR...or most professional racing sports where basically you or your car are a moving billboard.

Thats not a very hard name now is it - certainly wouldnt put the shits up the opposition!

 Red Devils - now thats a fecking name if ever I heard one

Good post though - and I take it your username means "New York Rangers"?

Nascar does have a lot of sponsors. Have you ever been to a nascar race before? Pretty fun time if done properly. Went for the first time last year and will be going back again this summer.

Are these the same races where the cars just keep going round and round in literally an oval shaped track...and there's no right turns at all whatsoever?

Yep..Sounds bloody well fun watching that compared to the likes of Schumi and Hamilton  :wenger: :D

I agree, some of the stuff is ridiculous. Commercialization can be found in every sport, just in different ways. Perhaps it's the American in me, but I don't care much if my team plays at Trojan Brand Condoms Arena or whatever sponsors them these days. Of course that's easy for me to say as none of my teams' stadiums/arenas are sponsored. It's a fact of life though, so I imagine I'd deal with it.

I think Randomhero made a good point in that a lot of fans here in the States aren't as passionate about their teams and as such, they're not really going to fight against injustices. I think it's also the American kind of viewpoint to not really care what goes on behind the scenes or any of those small details. They're not going to go through the effort to fight against wrongs, because they're just too lazy/don't care. All that matters is their team is playing.

 You're quite right. Doesn't really strike fear into the opponent, that name. Personally I like the names of the White Sox and Red Sox from baseball. Never have understood what was going on when those teams were named.

And yea, NYR in my name is for the New York Rangers. Been a fan of them from the moment I got into hockey.

Good man

You's dont hate Catholics the same way Glasgow Rangers do - do you?

My Mother wouldnt allow me to chat with you otherwise, she's our local Priest :D

Well I will say it is pretty cool to see a car go that fast for about 5 minutes and then I can care less. It's before the race that is fun.

I created this thread to effing cause a stirr,,,,

But I guess my views on North American Sports fans have now been further confirmed by that..

Where are you from? As an English sports fan, I think you are incorrect. Especially in regards to American football which I am a big fan of, as are many others in the UK. Could not give a feck about most of the other sports or the irrelevant things outside of the way the actual game is played though. Have I satisfied any of your thirst for causing a stir?

Well mate, it's a thing called culture, and i'm the medium of the entire equation so I can make cases for either side.

First, chants. NA Sport is considered a family friendly event, especially in the case of baseball which has been a pasttime for the USA for as long as English football has been a mainstay in their culture. There's no denying that the history of "soccer" to them is nothing but a bunch of savaging brits who start fights, drink beer, and sing songs louder than a 747. It's wrong, yes, but the vast majority of Brits perceptions of NA Sport is wrong as well.

Hockey for example, can be JUST as venomous as football; If you ever get the chance to catch a Montreal Canadiens game and know a bit of french, it's literally second-to-none.

All-Star games are a brilliant selection for the fans, by the fans, and in most sports are entertaining. In recent years it's dimmed down with big risks and contracts. I wouldn't mind actually if the EPL would compose 2 teams of the best players voted and have an friendly match.

Darren Huckerby is NOT a legend, that guy who reported that was a massive cnut and should have lost his job. (He did have a great first season mind)

There are away sections, especially in American football

There are loyalty ballots

And teams that are shit ARE penalised by this thing called loss of revenue, sure they get the first draft pick the following year, but clubs struggle when going through transition and their ppenalty is loss monies.

Darren Huckerby over there is a legend..
Will people stop reporting this as if it was a fact? It was one shitty sports anchorman who said that. It's the equivalent of me believing that Titus Bramble > Zidane because one Caftard said so.

They don't have away sections because we are civilized enough to not beat the crap out of each other over a game. I've sat next to rival fans at derby games, nothing happened except some spirited banter. Also, we can drink beer at games. Apparently the mix of grass and alcohol in England causes deadly violence.

American football – Gay
Ice Hockey – Gayer
Baseball - Gayest
Basketball - chemically castrated by the Americans, a lesser homo compared to the rest but still a homo.

Doubt if any one can present better!

:boring:

Aussie crowds are pretty wank as well to be honest.
They are very Americanised in the sense they dress up in body paint and silly wigs but ultimately just end up looking like cocks.
I've been to plenty of Rugby League matches, as is the mian sport in Sydney, with dismal crowds of under 15,000 and with less atmosphere than a pot of yoghurt. They have cheerleaders for feck sake.
Even the State of Origin, played between Queensland versus New South Wales which is the centrepiece of the league calendar is pretty crap. The last one I went to, you have the crowd shouting 'New South Wales' a few times which is about as inventive as they get.
My mam and her husband come out to see me every year and usually go to the cricket, where they piss themselves at the pathetic attempts of the Aussie crowd to chant a few songs.
I try and like rugby league, but there is little to enthuse me at all; once you've exoerienced Old Trafford, Wembley, Anfield etc, it'd like steeping from a hurricane into a bright sunny day....

Cricket is a different story. You don't go there to chant, you go their to get drunk and be able to slag off at the south african firelding in front of you or admit your undying love to Mitchell Johnson.

Let's have a look at sport for the slumdogs

Pretty much awful at everything other than cricket which they cheat at, which is pretty pathetic considering how many people live there.

He's right though.

American football - only 1 player (quarterback) requires any skill, rest of the team is made up of talentless fat oafs who wrestle with other players. Verdict: shit sport

Baseball - poor man's version of cricket. Again not even a hint of skill or technique required, just one bloke throwing a ball as hard as he can and the batter swinging and invariably missing. Need gloves to catch the ball as well. Verdict: shit sport

Basketball and icehockey - good end to end sports ruined by unnecessary time-outs and quarter breaks, which I guess they have to have to satisfy the attention spans of thick American viewers.

Except that an ice hockey game is divided into three periods, not quarters. try not to be so ignorant of the facts when you are making arguments, even for humour's sake, as it is detrimental to your cause.

that's because you are a prize fecking moron.

Jesus, I am sure you tried this nonsense elsewhere before and also made accusations about the sport, (especially in terms of its college structure) which were incorrect. I mean if you don't like a sport or have any sort of understanding of it, good for you, it's your prerogative. Just don't spout nonsense as if it is fact, you could at least have a go at the irrelevant things surrounding the sport which are different to what we do in England instead. Strange because you seem to be a decent poster from what I remember elsewhere, this subject is obviously a blind spot.

How true. Canaries, Lilly Whites and Tractor Boys are fearsome names.

American football - The QB is the most talented but the physical, mental, and cardiovascular skill of everyone but the lineman is second to none in ALL sport... and even the lineman have to hold someone back their size IF NOT bigger.

Baseball - Brilliant game that takes time and years to appreciate, a taste.

Basketball & Ice Hockey - Good valuation, especially on Basketball which is why College Basketball > NBA. Hockey however is very free flowing and an awesome sport.

You are an idiot. Your comments were so idiotic they were amusing. I'm not the biggest fan of baseball but to say it doesn't require skill is daft. If u are so good at it why don't you come over and make 20 mil a year

Psmith veredict- shit poster

It is a bit of a blind spot probably as a result of spending time with yanks who dismiss 'sawker' and cricket. Anyway I went OTT just to wind up ignorant and arrogant yanks like Alex, so it's not aimed at posters like you or the Dr.

American Football - So wide receivers, running backs, defensive backs, and linebackers are fat oafs with no athleticism then? You clearly have no knowledge of the sport and should probably refrain from commenting about it until you do. Quarterback is obviously the position that requires the most skill, but most of them can be included in the category of least athletic players on their team.

Baseball - Skill and technique are both needed in baseball. Athleticism in most cases not so much. I seem to remember Jeff Conine saying that there a lot of unathletic baseball players. That said, it takes skill and technique to throw an assortment of different pitches at a high speed into such a small area as well as being to hit a ball coming at you 100 miles per hour.

Basketball and Ice Hockey - The only evaluation where you're not completely off the mark. Fast sports with a couple too many breaks for my liking. That said, since the NHL lockout there have been fewer commercial breaks and shorter intermissions. Steps in the right direction. And I'm not even going to touch your final comment there. Not even worth it.

You didnt go over the top, you just got found out

European away matches? Not valid to your argument IMO.

How about for baseball - 81 "European away matches" a year? Hockey and basketball - 41. Bit difficult to really manage that. Especially seeing as large majorities of teams are on the east and west coasts here - a mere 3000 miles between them.
