Why our defence struggled?

Silvestrie went to the front to much and when he did go back no other midfielder went in his position. And what was the reason for Mikee to go to the front alot we were'nt under pressure that he have to go to the front so much.He is a great lad and almost scored a great goal but what he sometimes did is the work of the midfielders and remember the teams look at previous games and when they get us on the counter attack it is on the side where Mikee is suppose to defend.
Blanc played ok and when Mikee is not in his position Wes had to fill and gaps are created and goals was scored.

Our fullbacks are required to attack, we're not Liverpool where they hardly get beyond the half-way line.

In this case, Veron wasn't really much of a defensive force and Ole is ... well a striker playing on the wings. Scholes was not really getting much change in the middle and Butt was the only one trying to stem the flow.

Thus, our defence struggled.

With no real left winger, Silvestre was clearly instructed to go forward whenever he got the chance. It's football basics that if a full back pushes forward, a midfielder or another defender fills the gap.

Don't blame Silvestre, he had a good game (1st half notably). He provided the only genuine wing play all night...

Butt did a good job on Ballack, but there was way too much room for Basturk, and Lucio coming forward was causing quite a bit of confusion. Veron has to do a little more defending, way too much for Butt to do.

Both their goals came from down our left side due to their being noone availabe to help Silvestre...

I thought the formation was very bad, and should have been changed earlier when it was clear it was not working...

Veron needs to play in the centre and tried his best down the right but as we all know he's not the type of player you want marking a winger...

The formation for Leverkusen should be IMO,

-----------Barthez----------------
--------------------------------------------
P.Nev----Blanc---Johnsen---Silvestre
--------------------------------------------
---------------Butt---------------
Scholes---Veron----Keane----Giggs-
--------------------------------------------
---------------RVN----------------

You struggled because as Liverpool did, your midfield struggled to contain Basturk and there wasnt enough discipline from the midfield in general.

Couldn't agree more, after the first 20, I thought JSV should ahave been swithced to the centre, and Scholes to the right.

p.s. I think Scholes and RVN looked tired/jadded. and think both should have come off after the 2nd goal at Chelsea

Well we struggled because we didnt keep the ball to be fair, it doesn't matter what Basturk does. Espescially after our first goal, we gave them the ball for 10 mins.
Other teams can cope with that but we can't. We had the ability out there to kep hold of it, but our shape was all wrong. Something that isnt like Utd at all. We had a poor performance all round. IMO SAF will have to look at his formation, and playing players out of position (esp. Seba who dissappears when this happens)

Well, if they can't handle 90 minutes on Saturday afternoon and another 90 on Wednesday evening you might as well give me their contracts. I promise I will not look tired.

Not a matter of being able to play two games of 90 in 5 days, its a matter of having that extra yard, that little bit more for a big european game.

BL seemed to stoll thru their loss at the w/e. But looked sharper than us in passing and movement yesterday....

Would you not play OGS up front with RVN?
You need to score IMO at least 2, probably 3...so surely OGS and a 4-4-2 is required?

United are IMO at their best when playing 4-4-2.

</strong><hr></blockquote>I totally agree, perfect. Although ( ) ;) I'd start Dinny Irwin instead of Phizza, I think he is more composed and positionally aware than Phizza tbh.

As regards Ole, I'd have him come in off the bench for this one, it's not a matter of needing to win by x amount, just a 1-0 and we are through. A solid, disciplined midfield performance this leg is a must to stem any Bastürk, Zé Roberto type threat.

We've proven in the past rounds that we are more than capable of scoring away in Europe with this formation and we need a performance similar to that which we gave in Deportivo (obviously). Nicky needs to be the 'net' that catches any BL run through the midfield, that'll give Keano, Giggsy and Scholesy the opportunity to advance to support Ruud up front.

I am still sure we can progress as I know we can score at least a couple. If Nicky plays that Hamman type protector role, I think we are in, no problem.

I'm actually looking forward to the return leg, it should be exciting stuff.
I think Bayer will just go for United the way they did Liverpool even though they can afford a low scoring draw.

This should suit United perfectly because there will be plenty of opportunities to hit them on the break. I'd certainly fancy RVN or Solsjaer to nick a goal or two, so it's up to your defence to hold firm.
