Why don't we have a decent #2 keeper?

I thought the plan was to have competition for every position. There's no competition for the GK. Heaton is more of a staff addition at this point. And Bayındır has not ever been trusted, and did not arrive with any endorsements from anywhere.

I look at the rivals in this regard - the supposed rivals before they leave us adrift in the actual fight for the top spot - and they all have strong backup GKs.

Been rooting for Onana since he got here, but I have had doubts about his actual goalkeeping the whole time. Even if he'd have been a major success, you'd still want a very good keeper as backup, as contingency and to push your #1.

Onana is a horrible keeper. Very little improvement on his horrific start last year.

He was brought in to be a ball player keeper but unfortunately he's neither good at passing or shot stopping.

Almost every shot we concede goes in the back of the net. Obviously he can't help with the shots we concede but it feels like every time the opposition have a shot against us it goes in.

His passing is pish as well. Feels like we'd do just as well (terrible) with playing Maguire or Evans in nets.

Edit: typos

We should have been all over Ramsdale this window. One year on his contract, looking to leave Arsenal, and a far better keeper than Onana

Yeah it's a neglected position even if the caf erupts when we have a third choice goalkeeper signed

Bayandir is likely not an ETH signing, given that he isn't Dutch or Eredivisie experienced. So he's probably refusing to play him. He'll do the same with Ugarte most likely.

God isn't he sacked yet

I don't think Ramsdale is the answer. Being better than Onana shouldn't be the bar for anything. More importantly, a horribly vocal section of the fanbase spent years baying for a keeper who's good with his feet, and Ramsdale not being able to do that to a good enough standard is exactly why Arsenal binned him. He'd just end up in the same place as De Gea, with the Twitter football "experts" and the mindless drones who parrot them claiming his lack of ability with the ball at his feet is hampering the entire team.

We don't know if we have a decent #2 because the one we've got hasn't really ever been given a chance.

We had one. His name was Kovar and he is doing really well at Leverkusen.

Should have made him a cup keeper. Would've kept him happy, he would have developed as a player and in case of Onana dropping clangers, he could have easily stepped in.

Instead we shipped him out and signed some rando from Turkey.
