Why AF bought Ricardo

I wonder why the club spend money to bring in Ricardo with the existence of Barthez and Carroll in the team?

simple, carrol wasn't giving Barthez enough competition. SAF stands by his players, but doesn't mean he will guarantee them their places forever. Bringing in Ricardo was to be fire up Barthez' back side. I think it has worked to some extent because Barthez now knows there are 2 guys waiting to takeover his job whenever he screws up.

Maybe. Too soon to judge I think - haven't seen enough of Ricardo yet.

I'm the opposite, seen him more times than Carroll.

wasn't there a period last year when Barthez was injured and there was no one to be on the bench for Carrol? many fans were keeping their fingers crossed that Carrol didn't get injured. ultimately i think 3 + 1 or 2 youth is a good number for GK in a team.

In reserve games?

Can't really judge someone on reserve games.

Ricardo in Spain, Carroll for us in the first team.

He was available and SAF hadn't got the defender he wanted so he spent the money anyway. Barthez will be off soon anyway.

I remember Ricardo had a terrible game against Haifa away which our team lost and one of their bald head player's (can't remember the name or number) goal against us was ranked into the top ten goal in ESPN for a few weeks. I think the team played him because they want to intentionally lost to skip the early meet with some difficult opponents in the Champ league.

If my memory is correct, one of those was a penalty (ok he made the foul), and the other two were absolute scorchers that no keeper would have saved. What are you trying to say?

The 3 goals scoerd by Haifa were all reasonable quality. None were soley down to goalkeeping errors. Ricardo was not helped by some non-existant defending at times. I've seen Barthez miss easier shots, so it's unfair to slate him on that performance.
So far from the limited games I've seen him play Ricardo is showing a steadier nerve than Carroll & has potential to reach greater heights.

hmmm Ricardo gives me personally more nervous moments than Barthez does.
In his first 2 1st team appearances he has given away a silly needless penalty in both. But, that being said its too early to judge him properly yet.
Ive been watching Roy Carroll for years & believe that lad has the potential to be a really great goalkeeper. I thought he had a decent game last night. Its noticable that his kicking has improved a lot since he's been at United. If he doesnt make it there, then someone else is going to benefit from having a very good Number1.

All that being said, Barthez is the man in possession of the shirt, and if his performances this season are anything to go by, i see no reason to change that.

Carroll had a better record than Barthez last season, which was his first season, so he can't be said to have not given enough challenge to him. But if Barthez spends a lot of time injured due to his back problems then it meant Carroll had to play with no backup goalie and Alex rightly said that all the top sides have 3 goalkeepers. Hence Ricardo. Ricardo didn't have a good game against Haifa, which I was at, but he wasn't at fault for the two scorchers - they were just great goals. I thought our defence was great that night, Rio and O'Shea were outstanding. But our midfield was lightweight and porous putting a lot of pressure on the defence. One of the goals though was a penalty after Ricardo brought down the man - he's done this twice and I suspect it might be a continental thing, that they prefer the odds on a penalty over letting the man get past him for a shot into an empty net. What he was poor at that night was his kicking, and distribution which does seem to be a weak point for him imo.

not seen enough of ricardo yet, but i think carroll´s a fine backup and the money could´ve been spent better. it´s not like a team needs 3 potential starting goalies

He was a cheap replacement for Van Der Gouw, he'll come in handy when Barthez's back goes again.
