Who will play along side Rio long term?

I wouldn't be disappointed to see O'Shea as Ferdinand's long term partner. He's a cultured defender who certainly didn't look out of place last season. :)

O'Shea to be introduced as Rio's CB partner during 2002/3, initially as back up to Larry.

Then full time CB 2003/4 - review how he goes from there. He'll have had 2 years to grow, gain experience and play with the best.

I'd like Ronny to hang around for a while yet as cover - he must be due a decent run of fitness.

Fergie said he wants to form a strong partnership at the back. Hence I think Blanc may not always be first choice but O'Shea or Brown rather. Fergie has always rated Brown very highly and no doubt he is a great talent, but to partner Rio, I think O'Shea might be better as Rio has the pace which O'Shea lacks to some extent, which is probably the main flaw in O'Shea's game. He other wise seems to be more sturdy than Brown and reads the game very well. He is also stronger in the air. He always has an air of confidence about him which Wes Brown lacks.

Next year...could be Terry or Gallas if we don't see any progress from Brown or O'Shea in the next 12 months.

john terry would be nice ... hed add some steel to our back 4

John O'Shea would be my preferred choice but he needs experience. As long as it isn't Gary Nev. He has his good points but he is no centre back. It would be too much pressure on Rio. Don't forget he has very limited European experience and is only 23

<a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport/hi/english/football/eng_prem/newsid_2143000/2143975.stm" target="_blank">Alan Hansen</a> on his recommended partnership of brown and rio, agree with him too.

For the new season, Gary Neville would be my pick with Brown, Blanc and O'Shea providing back-up support. Yeah I know the Blanc supporters will be out for my blood but we really need to build for the future and Blanc playing regular first-team football is just not on the cards and imo is not even a probability - you can't expect him to last two games a week for the entire season can you? He'll be a good "playing coach" but I really feel G Neville would complement Ferdinand better - he's certainly got more stamina to forge a central defensive partnership, he's a leader, a communicator and an organizer. Captain for the back four and keeper. I hardly ever see him have a bad game for us in the middle of defence.

IMO, the MOST under-rated central defender we have.

Long term I feel that it will be Wes Brown. This would however not be my choice as I feel that O'Shea is younger than Wes and will end up being a better player.

Well, it's obvious it's going to be Rio and Blanc this season. With O'Shea and Wes stepping in whenever needed.

For the future I'd like for O'Shea to be tested. I think Rio-O'Shea is a better partnership on paper than Rio-Wes. Rio and Wes are mates tho and that is never a bad thing. It's obviously to soon to say who'll be the better CD long term, Wes or O'Shea.

But with Blanc no more a United player in 12 months we'll obviosly be buying another CD. Who'll it be? Mexes or Hofland, maybe. Maybe a more experienced CD. Ayala is a perfect partner for Rio IMO, and in one years time he'll be tested in the Premiership for a season.

I agree. Wes Brown has a long way to go b4 he frightens anyone other than us. ;)

Brown or O'Shea hopefully.. Then we got ourselves a brand new pair of "Dolly & Daisy" :D

The only thing we need now (when Dwight seems to leave), is a new striker...

WELCOME RIO !!

fergie tried oshea and blanc in the firendly, and they although similar players from what i heard played well together.

so maybe it might oshea, rio, with brown becoming our new thuram style (right back), with pace and power on the right.

rio and ronny this AND next season. O`Shea will still play half the season if Sir Alex gives ronny a contract... Blanc for emergency only!

Yeah, mate Bob has spoken highly of O`Shea for quite a while now.
But I remember Giles saying Brown will be the best defender this country has seen!!Seems such a long time ago now though.

I feel we needed some one strong in the air at the back for a long time,Neville gave us that but Brown is abit weak in that department.

From what I have read its going to be O`Shea for the future.
